The Firing Line

You should have seen the look on this guy's face

Uploaded on March 08, 2010

I just received this from some fella on facebook I don't even know and if I did, I'd disown him in a heartbeat!

I was riding in Florida with a group of bikers I had only known for a couple of weeks, going from one little bar to another just for the ride, then ride back. They had all been bugging me for my road name (handle) and, since I really didn't have one they said they just might have to come up with something for me.

There were about 16 or 17 of us in the pack, and 2 of the bikes were a man and a woman who had just gotten bikes a couple of weeks earlier, so we told them to ride in the back of the pack - if ya do something stupid we'll come back and get you, but if you're anywhere else you'll take out everyone behind you.

We were on US 41 north of Palmetto and had just pulled out of Peggy's Coral. If you're familiar with the area 41 is a nice, 4 lane road with a wide grassy median in the middle. I was riding in about the middle of the pack and we were all in the slow lane - the passing lane was wide open, when I heard a blaring horn, racing engine, screeching tires, and more horn. I turned to look behind me and there was some moron in a red pickup truck about 2 feet behind the back 2 bikes (at 60 mph) laying on the horn, racing his engine, running up even closer to them, and having a great old time harassing the 2 bikes in back - the newbies - shooting them the finger and laughing his butt off from all the "fun" he was having. The newbies were obviously terrified at the prospect of this idiot turning them into human speed bumps.

I dropped back in the pack and motioned everyone around me, and when I got to the back he tried the same antics with me - and when he got to within 6 inches of my tail light at 70 mph I turned around and with my left hand pointed my .357 right at his head and pulled the hammer back.

You should have seen the look on this guy's face as he locked up all 4 wheels and did a Dukes of Hazzard U-turn through the median! Needless to say, the unanimous decision was that my handle should be Tailgunner - and it stuck ever since

So can we consider you part of a biker gang now. Quite the funny story and would have loved to have seen the look on that guys face.

NO, I'm no part of any Riding Club and don't even own a bike. This guy, even though it sounded like the right thing to do for some, could have been arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and terroristic threat and jailed for 3-12 years easy! And as for the diver of the truck would still be out on the street!

So, Tailgunner, tell us some more stories. Who's the wacko here?

Most bikers are risk takers by nature. (Scooters don't count...) Assuming the story is true I'd be happy to hang with a guy like the Tailgunner.

But then, he may have only grown a pair through the last drink at the last bar... In which case he's not a brave stand up guy, neither a whacko, just a stupid drunk -- in which case, I agree with Clay Cooper..

I wrote the guy back and asked him what would have happened if he did pull the trigger. He responded putting it in a nutshell, he tried his best to justify it.

I wrote back, OK so it could have been justified. But what about the truck doing 70mph without a conscious driver at the wheel now, the truck is now out of control, so what about that! I rest my case!

News at ten on CNN. Biker shoots driver and truck careens into oncoming traffic killing a family of four and injuring 47 with 19 critical in a 8 car plus one School buss pileup!

Sound familiar?

I carry concealed everyplace I go, even at work with the exception in Church. I find myself walking away from people at the slightest hint of an argument. All I need is someone to call the Cops even though no weapon was brandished, it could get very messy and false allegations of a weapon now could be made.

Get the big picture!

I would hope that the majority of site members would have the maturity to not brandish a firearm unless they were threatened. Getting pimped by a bully is not a reason to brandish deadly force.

Mr. Cooper

I thought that I recall you saying you worked for the VA? If so, how can you carry in a Federal building or federal property?

Most employers don't allow carry in the workplace areound here either.

CJ I don't work for the VA and as for my workplace, the owners of the company welcome me packing heat.

Didn't I mention, my Wife and I own the business, LOL! :)

Carney, I would if I could besides, there is plenty of Deputy Sheriffs "NOT" eating doughnuts during service so I do feel safe and speaking of carrying in Church, the bill was narrowly defeated to allow CCW to carry in Church which I'm all for.

Back to this fella in Florida, he said he even cocked the 357 Mag. Can you just imaging if that gun went off and hit the driver what that uncontrolled truck could have done! MY GOD!

Personally, I would have pulled over and let the idiot have the road. Now if he would have followed me into a parking lot, deferent story of unknown consequences that would have been legal and prudent may I add!

Dakota Man can you define "getting pimped by a bully".
Don't get me wrong, I generally (and wholeheartedly) agree with you about brandishing a firearm. I don't know how to respond (or even if I should) to the other part about getting pimped by a bully.
If it means being slapped around by a bully, well I'm not going to let that happen. I can qualify that last remark by stating that I usually don't frequent places where bullies congregate and if I do find myself somewhere when trouble starts, I exit stage right immediately.
If for argument's sake someone starts slapping me around or punching me for no apparent reason, and I try to get away from said individual but was prevented from escaping by same individual, then I plan to brandish away and follow up with advising said individual that he should stop his aggressive actions immediately.
In most states kidnapping is defined as preventing an individual from freedom of movement, or holding a person (for any length of time) against his/her will. It doesn't have to be tying someone up, throwing them into the back of the car...or truck...and taking him/her to the hideout to await ransom. Therefore said bully just illegally "kidnapped" me.
I agree with Clay about the tailgunner dude. Very irresponsible!
I also agree with Dakota Man about brandishing. Somewhere however, in the land between "sticks and stones will break my bones" and actual physical force, there is a line in the sand called self defense. In most states I only have to be convinced in my own mind that deadly force was necessary to protect my life, property, or liberty. The difficulty occasionally lies in convincing the jury.
Now suppose I'm 61 years old but don't necessarily look it. I can if necessary look 70 or 75 and show up in court with the walker I was issued by the hospital after my last hip replacement. After all, if the bully/dirtbag survives, he will show up to testify in court all slicked down and dressed up, grinning like Justin Timberlake.
All of this is hypothetical of course and was posted as such.
Just some food for thought.

Akansas, they tried to pass a revision last year to allow the carry of CCW in Church but it was shot down. I'm just waiting something to happen to me were I'm forbidden to carry and sue the crap out of them!

Could have been a good twist in "Easy Rider" I can only see myself in legal trouble for using a gun to counter intimidate, but then again a gun is lighter than a cop.
