The Fishing Report
I was fly fishing a residential pond the other day and a guy came out of his house and threw some fish pellets in the pond. About five minutes later these catfish tarted eating the pellets. I jumped on the opportunity and started fly casting a size 8 brown foam hopper pattern and landed a 13 pounder on 8lb. tippet. I have pictures on my buddies phone and I am trying to get them on here.
Ahh, the old pellet fly trick. Private fish ponds feed trout pellets, some are dog food pellets..the trout can grow huge, and accustom themselves to the pellet feeding time. The one time I was invited to fish a private pond, the rules were....no pellet flies! Private ponds, "Pay to Play" ponds are popular all across the country...and they can cost $200 a day to fish them per person. I don't care to fish them, but a lot of people do.
Your pond had catfish that were fed the pellets. There are automatic pellet feeders set to spray the pond with pellets at a certain time of day.
i was fly fishing for bass at my buddies pond the other day with a bumble bee popper and the cat fish were rolling directly under it..i put a dough ball on and caught a big one..its alot of fun.
I fly fish for catfish and bass with my 8 wt rod twitching clouser minnows or crawdad flies on the bottom near vegetation.
Been there, done that, for huge, rainbow trout reaching obesity eating dog food pellets fed from an automatic pellet sprayer like a fountain out in the middle of the pond. Guy's did the same as you, and the guy made a regulation...no dog food pellet flies! I caught one so fat, I had to get out into the pond to land the darn thing, its belly bottomed out in about 10" of water. Cost was $150 a rod for the day..one time was enough for me.
So, I guess no one has actually fly fished for catfish anywhere but a private pond! I would love to hear about those experiences just to gain a bit of knowledge!
I fly fish for bass and catch catfish occassionally. I never said anything about private ponds. I fish public access lakes. I fish from shore and off the bottom with weighted flies. I fish my flies like plastic worms. There is no magic color that works better than any other color. For my crawdads I tie them in natural colors to match the algae or substrate. Tans, olives, browns, etc. My Clousers on the other hand are usually brightly colored and catch just as often. Go figure.
Late last spring while trying my best to find the absolute last steelhead in the creek. Caught what turned out to be an 11lb. cat on a black wooly bugger fished just off the bottom. Dang fish ran me 50-60 yards downstream.
Hoski, you must have had a blast with that one!
A catfish in a steelhead stream? Talk about degrading a fine sportfish like a steelhead. Do carp run up that creek as well?
I had never heard of fly fishing for catfish! But I see now that it does happen! That is amazing to me, because I had never heard it before, but I have lived and I'm still learning!
Catfish are nite feeders. All the catfishermen I ever knew went out at nite to catch them. Can't imagine a fly angler going out at nite, and fishing a still fly on the bottom. Catfish find their food by the use of their feelers detecting smell. What would you put on your fly?...tip them with power bait, or put "smelly jelly" on the fly?
Sayfu, actually I have never caught them at night. I have caught them early in the morning, sometimes at mid day. No smelly jelly or scents involved. Not even my world famous Garden Hackle LOL. Strictly flies fished in slow motion. By the way, you are absolutely right, most catfisherman I know go out at night. Not all but most.
That's the book on catfish. They do feed the most at nite relying on their feelers to sense/smell food. When I was young, and living in Northern Ohio, guys would get a case of beer, and head for Sandusky Bay, and fish for them along the Bay. Don't think they had a designated driver either.
