The Huntress Club
My name is Emily Byers. I live just outside of Lexington, Virginia. I am 18 years old and this is my hunting story:
On Thanksgiving morning, my boyfriend Joe walked me to my tree stand around 3:00 p.m and he walked on up the hill to his stand. I waited around thinking that I would see a deer but I wasn't having any luck. Around 5:00 I started to hear something wrestling in the leaves. I waited to see what it was and it ended up being a turkey walking through the woods. I had never killed a turkey before and knew that I wasn't having any luck with deer that evening so I decided that I wanted a turkey. I sent a text to my boyfriend and asked him if I could shoot a turkey and he replied yes. I didn't have a turkey call or anything with me and I was scared that I was going to lose my chance with this turkey because he had already walked down over the hill to where I couldn't see him anymore. I tried to call the turkey by making noises with my mouth and nothing happened to then I pulled out my phone and got on YouTube and started to play a turkey call. About 2 seconds later I heard a group of turkeys coming down the hill. I rushed to take my orange vest off so that they wouldn't be able to see me and I tucked it behind me in the stand. I then picked up my gun and got ready. I saw where one was gonna walk in a clear spot that would be easy to shoot. As soon as I saw that hen in my scope I pulled the trigger. My boyfriend sent me a text right after asking me if i got him so before I replied, I walked down over the hill and saw that pretty hen laying there and I quickly replied "I got him!" I never knew that YouTube would come in handy in the woods but it was my lifesaver that day! I am proud to say that my first turkey was shot at over 100 yards away and from now on I will always carry my phone in case I need to use a YouTube call again.
Congrats on your success! Great idea to use your smart phone as a turkey call. Just two notes:
(1) Taking off your orange was illegal. You are required by law to wear it at all times during deer season. Besides that, you violated a major rule designed for your safety.

(2) Also, it was unlawful to use an electronic call.
