The Tip Board
cheap & easy,waterproof fire starter
Uploaded on October 16, 2009
Cut some 2" x 3 "rectangles out of a cardboard box-- the kind with a zig zag center layer. Very carefully melt some wax in a tin can-- liquid wax is dangerous so take all appropriate precautions. Poke a peice of stiff wire thru the card board and dip it into the wax , coating it on all sides. I suggest you wear gloves--hot wax burns! Remove the dipped peices using pliers and place on a heat resistant surface to cool. You can make a few dozen in a short time. Carefully cut the strips to resemble a book of matches. This step helps lighting and burning.
Put about a dozen or so into a ziplock bag with a bic lighter or 2 to create a fire starter kit. You can stash kits in your knapsack /grub box / car/ pockets etc.
You can use as many as needed to start your fire depending on the circumstances. One or two usually work for me.
I gather all my tinder etc. and position the cardboard, bending the stems to make it easy to light.

to save the hassle just go to your local grocer and ask the produce guy if you can have the waxed boxes that brocoli is usually shipped in. They are happy to get rid of them because cardboard recyclers will not accept them. then you don't take the chance of getting burned while melting wax.
