I learned way back from my dad that when he was maintaining his firearms during off season he would put a cork in the barrel and I asked him why. He said that it helped keep moisture out of the barrel where the moisture would get hung in the rifling and rust. He done this because sometimes he forgets to take them out and do the regular oiling and cleaning of the barrels.
