The Tip Board

first aid firestarter

Uploaded on January 29, 2012

Most outdoorsmen know about using a petroleum covered cotton ball to light a fire, but if you pack a small bottle of rubbing alcohol, you'll get much more satisfactory results. I tested alcohol-soaked cotton balls against ones covered in petroleum jelly, and the alcohol ones burned for and average of 4 minutes with a 10 inch tall flame, compared to 3 min and a 4 inch flame for the petroleum balls. Both take a spark easily, but the alcohol ones do not make a mess, they burned cleanly, and the alcohol can be used to clean out wounds if necessary.

Another good fire starter is dryer lint. It doesn't burn as long but it burns really hot and a lot can be packed into a small film container.

If you are putting it in a first-aid kit I usually have a toilet paper cardboard role filled with shavings with paper covering both ends. It is kinda big but I think you could lite some soaking wet wood with it.

I used to try that as a little kid but I'd just put TP inside, and it never really worked, but if you put shavings in it that'd work, especially if you sealed it with wax... I'm gunna have to try this out sometime this week. thanks!

I have used dryer lint like Weazel. I save up the lint then take an egg carton and cut it up into single cups and fill it with the lint, then top it off with some paraffin wax. The longest I've been able to get them to burn is about six min by its self. I do like the cotton ball's in alcohol idea and will give that a try. Thanks for the post.
