Spotlight on Killeen Texas

Lots of people might think of Killeen, Texas as a city out in the sticks. in fact it's situated right between major cities of Dallas and Austin, just off the highway I35 corridor.

Back in 1884, Killeen was a town of about 400 people. In the frontier times of Texas, it didn't exist as a town, but no doubt serves as a location of many battles between native Americans and white frontiersmen. In his book, Indian Depredations in Texas, Josiah Wilbarger records some of the fought between whites and Indians in the first days of Texas. In fact, some of the early stories within the novel details the scalping of Wilbarger's brother, who had been left living with a savage wound than eventually killed him several years after.

In the early 1900s, some politicians from Killeen managed to convince the state to build some bridges which dramatically raised the commerce. By the portion of the twentieth century, Killeen held around 1500 individuals. But the population growth of Killeen extremely took off during WW2 when it was used as a military training installation and became something of a boomtown. Originally named Camp Hood, the name of-the military base was afterwards changed to Ft. Hood.

Killeen is frequently determined with Ft. Hood, the army base where more than 80 thousand military personnel reside. But Killeen really has a rich history that goes back to the frontier times of Texas, way beyond the second World War where Ft Hood got its start.

Killeen residents are proud of their town, and unlike many off-the-beaten-route towns that boast an aged people, Killeen is truly a youthful city. The median age is 27, and three-quarters of the inhabitants are under-the age of 40. Killeen is one of the great American small townships that may not be much to write home about for a vacation, but has all the comforts one could want for a terrific lifestyle for a town to call home. With Dallas and Austin (not to mention Waco) close by, this is a pleasant cut of Texas that offers a wonderful place to stay for singles and . families
