How about favorite instead of best? I've been taken to task on here before for it but it's legal and ethical; I like a Savage 24F12T .223 Remington over a 3" 12 gauge, 50 gr. WW PSP's in the rifle, Federal 2 oz. copper coated #6's in the shotgun.
To me its not the size of the gun or the ammo, it all depends on how far the turkey is and the choke in your gun.
if i know im going to be doing a lot of walking or know ill be hunting areas where shots are going to be close ill take my 12 gauge beneli montefeltro. full choke with 3" 5 shot. most days though ill carry an ithaca 10 mag, with 3 1/2" 4 shot full choke. can kill a turkey at 70 yards with that outfit.
I use a 20ga CVA Optima shooting 3", 1 1/8oz, #6 hevishot, XFull choke with camo finish on stock and barrel.
My suggestion would be a Mossberg 835 3 1/2" mag. pump shotgun with the fullest choke you can find. I use Winchester #5 or #4 shot and, knock on wood, I have never missed yet. The entire DEER3o Team uses this set up and in the last three years we have taken 14 gobblers, several beyond 40 yards.
The beauty of this shotgun is that if you decide 3 1/2" is too much recoil for your shoulder, the gun will fire 2 3/4" and 3" as well. Less power means less range so practice your calling so a hung up Tom doesn't get away.

Like 007 says it is legal in our state and with the coyote problem we have I sometimes use my CZ .22 Hornet with 45 grain Winchester Hollow Point bullets with a 3X9X40 Nikon Buckmaster scope on it. Sometimes I use my Weatherby SA08 12 ga. shooting Remington 3 inch #6 Hevi-shot out of a super full Carlson Choke tube. Depends on where I am hunting.
About any 12 ga. chambered for 3" shells will do, at the range I shoot them, a trap load of 7 1/2's will do, although 3" #5 lead is what I prefer.
I posted a few weeks ago that the Mossberg 835 3 1/2" mag is the best turkey gun out there. I would like to add the the Mossberg 535 3 1/2" mag should be added to the conversation. We at deer30outdoors choose the 3 1/2" mag because we rarely hunt open fields and quite often have to plow the road through brush to get the shot. Check out a video hunt from 2012 that demonstrates why anything less would have resulted in a lost bird at www.deer30outdoors.com/kevins-2012-turkey-hunt/
