The Turkey Roost
I have am both fortunate and blessed to have my weekend fall on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and live in a town surrounded by WMA's. I was running errands one morning and in my usual habit, was looking through the fields in the safety zone by the National Gurad Armory. Usually I can see a handfull of deer and turkey. This morning I happened to drive past a couple of hens and a Tom in full strut. Now this is the normal case since throughout the season i have seen hundreds of birds strutting in their protected area. As I drove by I just thought awesome there are still some big boys going to work on making babies.
Later when my wife had to go to school I decided I was going to go fishing and exploring on another segment of the WMA. As I got out there I saw no turkey or deer but kept driving around just to get an idea of where things were so come scouting time I would be ready. As I am heading out to go to yet another segment of the WMA I see a hen shoot across the road, so I stop and watch for awhile. Once she starts moving I start moving in to see how close I can get, and while moving in I hear a Tom gobblin his ol head off. This surprises me to no end since throughout the season I could not hear or get a Tom to gobble past 4 o clock.
I finally make it to the last segment of WMA I am looking at and come across The Biggest Tom I have ever seen and three hens. All this leads me to ask don't they know the season has been over for 20 whole days????
I did get my turkey this year but I would have liked to hit my limit of 4 and these guys would have been an awesome addition to it.
