The Turkey Roost

"etiquette" in the turkey woods

Uploaded on May 13, 2013

This morning marked the 3rd time I have been set up on a longbeard and been walked right in on. This particular property there is only 1 place to park (unless you go below in which you have to drive past the truck). The landowner does give other people permission to hunt. Thats not the issue. Opening morning these kids set up 40 yards behind us. However I was successful still that morning. This morning it was well past light and these kids come I guess we will say "sneaking" in regular clothes no facemasks fingers on the trigger ready to shoot out of the tree. I made a gentle "hey" in which case these kids lit up about how messed up it was we were there on this bird. blah blah blah

Long story short what would you consider good respect/etiquette in the turkey woods. Apparently I should get those pop up bright orange signs that say "caution: Hunter in area". Ive never had a season where I was so scared im going to be shot. Post your opinions and Thanks!

I hunt an area that has a lot of public land and a lot of private land owned by timber companies and open to public hunting. I have a lot of area to hunt long beards but do run into people sometimes. My personal etiquette: If another hunter is set up between me and a gobbler or set up first and calling, I move out of the area quickly and quietly and give them a chance at the bird. If I'm set up first, The other guy should show me the same courtesy. Most people seem to understand the rule.

I'm not sure what to tell you. If these kids know you're there and still coming in and setting up, I'm not sure an etiquette talk would help.
