I notice in the fall that the hens and toms will seperate into different flocks. The big flocks (20 to 30) birds will be hens while the toms travel in 4-5's. They are very patternable in the fall so its kind of like deer hunting. i find their roost and their food and set in a tree stand and intersept them. I shoot them with a bow so that is why I use the stand. I also never call in the fall.
Mdpaulus, you had me concerned for a minute about that turkey hunting from a tree until you said you don't call. Whew! The more traditional method is to indeed pattern them and try to get close enough to thoroughly scatter the flock and then sit down right there and start calling gently, they will try to reassemble at that point. Kee-kee runs, soft yelps, purrs, will get you started. Camo up well, stay quiet and alert, and good hunting.
I knew there was something I forgot to do and apply for a fall turkey tag is it! D'OH!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck to all.
