The Turkey Roost
I have a story to tell all of you. This past year, I made the worst decision of my life. I went turkey hunting with an absolute fool. It started out opening day of spring turkey hunting. I went hunting that morning and called in a huge tom (My first turkey ever called in). Unfortunately, he hung up in some brush and I couldn't get a shot. I later headed home to feed the stock. I ended up running into the neighborhood drunk (A few years ago he fell out of deer stand and killed his leg while being drunk). I told him that I was turkey hunting and had never shot one. He offered to take me and call. I didn't want to be rude and I was desperate for a turkey so I said OK. The first day we had no luck but the second day was when the action began. I recently purchased the Pretty Boy decoy and I wanted to try it out so I set it 30 yards out. I knew that my gun only patterned out to 40 so I couldn't shoot past the decoy. He started calling (What he calls calling is soft clucks on a push pin call that he thinks will reach 1/4 mile out in head on wind). Out of no where a jake appeared 1/4 mile out and saw the decoy. We were set up behind round bales because he thinks that turkey's know what a human looks like and no part of you can be seen. After a fifteen minute wait, the jake stands 70 yards out. He says "quick, shoot it." I say "no, it's out of my range and I know that he's still coming. He pulls up his gun and shoots. The bird somehow drops. He sets down his gun, hoots and hollers, and heads out to get the bird. He gets halfway and the bird gets up and runs. What does he do, but runs after it. In between him and the bird is a small stream (So it appears). He attempts to hurdle the stream and when he gets half way he realizes that the water is 4 feet deep and lands dead in the middle. To make a long story short. He kills his knee again, we don't find the turkey, and I never go hunting with him again. I also end up shooting two fine jakes that year. All by my self and 100% without a fool by my side.
that's funny next time you will learn from your that and say no to someone who asks to come and has no clue what they are doing.
Sounds like someone I know. He claims (although I wasn't there to see it) that he shot a turkey on the wing at 60-70 yards with a .22. I don't hunt with him either.
