The Turkey Roost

New Squealing Hen Call

Uploaded on January 25, 2011

I've seen the commercials for the new squealing hen calls. I have never witnessed/heard this type of commotion in the woods personally, so I'm wondering if this is just hype or a ligitimate call that is going to make its way into every hunter's vest in the near future. For me, anything that sounds like a distress call tends to bring in the predators and sends skittish animals like a turkey running for cover, aka: sounds like a bad idea. Anybody else have an opinion or heard a hen squeal while mounted in the field?

You know this is an interesting topic. I was recently in the woods chasing whitetail and I encountered a huge group of hens-80 to be exact. I observed them for close to 45 minutes and heard some calls that I've never heard before. One was a type of squeal/whine, and the other was a long drawn out purr with a whine/cluck at the end of it. So food for thought. P.S. who is advertising the squealer call, I haven't yet got wind of it.

It really isn't a new call. My friend Eddie Salter, who works for HS Strut and is from LA, (Lower Alabama) came up with the call years ago. It imitates the sound a hen makes when a tom is treading her back during breeding. I've heard the sound several times over the years in the woods. It really isn't a distress call but one of many natural responses from a hen turkey. Eddie has been using it as a deal closer for some time and finally decided to market the call (actually gave them the call) through HS. He gave me one last year when they brought it out. I will admit that I did not use it last season as I forgot I had it. When I saw him recently one of the first things he asked was, "how did the squealing hen work?" I owned up to my transgression...

Eddie will tell you it doesn't work everytime and is best used in a situation where a tom is excited but won't commit. Or as he says, "Blow it when you fell you need it, it won't run anything off."

Eddie is a very clever call designer and one of the best turkey hunters ever to sit by a tree. He is an astute listener in the woods and one of the few who can come home and build something that sounds like what he heard. He still has several gimmick calls he keeps up his shirt sleeve. Actually he so many of them are up there he rattles slightly when you shake his hand.

Very cool insight/info. I've spent 15 years chasing Easterns here in MO and hadn't heard anything like it. I used to pick up the newest and greatest every season, but started to feel like I was the Jack of all trades and master of none. Eliminated half my vest and started killing 3-4 toms a year (Spring and Fall seasons). So, before I get a new piece of gear, I like to know how it fits into my way of hunting. Sounds like it might be a good last ditch call when I have a hen leading a hot gobbler in the opposite direction.

My cousin has used with mixed success. He's had gobblers come in on a rope but he's also had gobblers totally ignore it.

I just recently bought and tried the call out....and I'm purely amazed. The gobblers were call shy this morning, not responding to a single yelp or hoot I had to throw at em', and I decided to just try it and see. All of a sudden the woods EXPLODED with gobbling, over seven different birds responded very enthusiastically. If I were to recommend a single call to add to a collection, this is it. A deal closer is an understatement. It drove those toms hog wild.

John,

Congratulations! When hunting out west I always like to have a boatpaddle type call. They can really project over distance and in windy conditions. Good Luck and let us know how it turns out.

Bee, just this past Easter weekend I bagged a tom with an 11 in beard, 1 1/4 in spurs, and a nice 21.6 lbs. I used the squealer to grab his attention and though it took a little while he came right to me, crossing over 250 yards to get within gun range. Of course, I didn't use it exclusively, but it did the trick.

Never heard this call in the wild but if a Tom is in the mood I think anything will work when mixed in with some good yelping.

I went out this last weekend and spotted a tom coming down off a ridge about 3/4 of a mile away. I called and he gobbled and went into strut immediately. I then began to yelp at him and he slowly but surely came my way. He got to about 60 yards and hung up! He strutted there for about 20 minutes before he came down a second smaller ridge. He only came to 30 yards and I never had a shot with my bow. I think he was intimidated by my Killer B decoy. Anyways he went behind me up a small bluff and i took feathers off his back on a 45 yard uphill shot, but no cigar. (he went off unwounded)Do you think he might have committed if i had squeled at him?

Bad as I hate to say it, cause Evergreen (AL) Eddie Salter is a good guy and a PDG turkey hunter, I don't think one will ever find it's way into my vest.

I will never go out without one. Got to use it for the first time this spring. Had a jake (I know, let's not turn this into deer hunting now...) hang up, came running in to the squealer. Watched two birds fall to the call within a half hour. Awesome.
