youtube turkey

My name is Emily Byers. I live just outside of Lexington, Virginia. I am 18 years old and this is my hunting story:

On Thanksgiving morning, my boyfriend Joe walked me to my tree stand around 3:00 p.m and he walked on up the hill to his stand. I waited around thinking that I would see a deer but I wasn't having any luck. Around 5:00 I started to hear something wrestling in the leaves. I waited to see what it was and it ended up being a turkey walking through the woods. I had never killed a turkey before and knew that I wasn't having any luck with deer that evening so I decided that I wanted a turkey. I sent a text to my boyfriend and asked him if I could shoot a turkey and he replied yes. I didn't have a turkey call or anything with me and I was scared that I was going to lose my chance with this turkey because he had already walked down over the hill to where I couldn't see him anymore. I tried to call the turkey by making noises with my mouth and nothing happened to then I pulled out my phone and got on YouTube and started to play a turkey call. About 2 seconds later I heard a group of turkeys coming down the hill. I rushed to take my orange vest off so that they wouldn't be able to see me and I tucked it behind me in the stand. I then picked up my gun and got ready. I saw where one was gonna walk in a clear spot that would be easy to shoot. As soon as I saw that hen in my scope I pulled the trigger. My boyfriend sent me a text right after asking me if i got him so before I replied, I walked down over the hill and saw that pretty hen laying there and I quickly replied "I got him!" I never knew that YouTube would come in handy in the woods but it was my lifesaver that day! I am proud to say that my first turkey was shot at over 100 yards away and from now on I will always carry my phone in case I need to use a YouTube call again.

DNR's BOW

I am a big wildcrafter and started hunting this year. My step-dad told me about Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW). I was wondering if anyone on here has gone and if they enjoyed the courses offered? The DNR state website doesn't have much information and wanted to hear of others' experiences. Thanks!

Hi all! I'm happy to say that I shot my first deer this season in Nebraksa! It's a doe, but I'm still proud of what I did and thankful for the experience. I wrote a post about it on my blog. There are pictures too, if you're interested. You can read it here:

handgun recommendations?

I posted this in Answers, but I thought I'd see if any women out there might offer insight:

I don't own a handgun, but believe it or not, my wife expressed interest in getting one. I'm curious as to what handgun & ammo people recommend? It's for both of us to shoot.

1. Our 1st handgun
2. My wife is 5'6" 120 lbs
3. It'll probably be used at the range mostly (but let's say home defense too)
4. I'd like an economical ammo
5. Not against revolvers, but not exactly for them either (convince me otherwise if you like)

Hunting Story Published in UCLA Newspaper

Hi there! Since hunting is so foreign around our parts, I decided to write about hunting this quarter. It was a good opportunity to educate students at UCLA what hunters and pro-hunting organizations really do for our wildlife. And... I must admit that I had a small hankering to cheese off some animal rights groups on campus.

To read the article, click here: http://foodforhunters.blogspot.com/2011/11/uclas-bruin-standard-publishe...

Hunting plans for fall

I HAD a plan for fall but we did not draw muley tags for Colorado. I have a new bow and I am dying to harvest my first animal with it.
So, my question is...what are your plans for fall. Where are your travels taking you to enjoy what we love the most...the outdoors.
Female Voice

I have noticed, lately, the lack of female voice when it comes to hunting magazines/websites. I know there are tons of great female "huntresses" out there and would find it interesting to hear their voices. I write some myself and have had a bit of a hard time finding out how to submit to the magazines/websites, but still I try everyday...not because of an internal desire to be published, but in the hopes that someday women hunters will not be in the minority. I want my 16 mo old daughter to grow up with strong role models, not tweens who go crazy the moment their Disney contract ends!

Bowhunting- Late season

I am venturing out bow hunting on my own for the first time-usually I have my boyfriend with me ( I moved from Minneapolis to North Dakota about 3 years ago and had never really even seen many deer- until I met him- who has been hunting for 20 years or more- now I have hunted small game, big game, birds, varmints, etc with fire arms)

My parent's own a property in East/North Dakota. I am planning on hunting tree lines behind their home that has been undisturbed for five years- there are numerous large trails, etc. and I have seen huge does my self wondering through. (have heard reports of neighbors seeing large bucks in the area)

I am wondering what is the best time of day- weather conditions ( we are in the second blizzard of the week)- or any other tips I can use ( ie. attractants). I will be hunting on ground- no blind- any expert recommendations? I want to tag and bag my first buck with my bow alone :) Thank You!

Would you shoot an albino whitetail?

First of all I'd like to thank all the women for participating in the shooting sports. Your support is key to keeping our gun rights for a long time. Thanks!
Watch this TV link,
http://kstp.com/article/stories/S348404.shtml?cat=1&v=1
and see the albino twins I feed in my backyard. Even though it is legal to harvest albinos here in Minnesota, I chose not to but would respect my fellow hunters decision to do so as long as it's done legally. Check out my profile and photos of other albinos (besides the twins) that live in my area and tell me... would you shoot an albino whitetail deer? Thanks again, Tim

The .500 is a girly gun

The .500 is a girly gun
Uploaded on March 18, 2010
Yesterday I stopped by a friend's house to look over a couple new old guns he had acquired. He recently purchased a good .32-.20 Winchester in addition to a not so good .25-.35. After saying a few kind words I put on my hat to leave when his wife smiled at me in that way that some women do when they know you are about to be rendered speechless and asked "Don't you want to see my new revolver?". Just to be nice I answered in the affirmative. She produced a plastic Ruger box and I though probably a new Single Six or maybe a .32 Mag. She opened the box and handed me a custom .500 Linebaugh Bisley. This revolver was made by an old timer in New Mexico specifically for her. In fact she had worked extra hours to get enough money to pay a princely sum for the piece. The barrel was 4 5/8", excellent adjustable sights, Doublas barrel, handbuilt cylinder which would spin in either direction around one of those heavy duty custom cylinder pins, and a steel ejector housing. No flutes, fit and finish was beyond reproach, and all sharp edges had been gently rounded including the trigger which had a "breath on me" pull weight. Only the frame was Ruger plus a few internal parts as the maker had created the Bisley grip frame from a piece of steel just as he made the cylinder. Since this was only the 8th revolver he had ever made it had her initials and 08 engraved on the grip frame. Being almost devoid of words as I looked at the gun I finally remarked that the bright white ivory micarta grips sure were pretty contrasting with the deep dark blue of the steel. "Yeah", she said "I wanted it to look girly". As I stared at the half inch holes in the cylinder and the gaping cavern at the end of the barrel and thinking about that heavy lead slug erupting from it somehow the word "girly" had never entered my mind. Some women never cease to amaze me. Enjoy your new revolver Tammy.

Help Teaching My Daughter

Dear Ladies,

As women who enjoy the outdoors I would like your input. I have a two and a half year old daughter and I want to at least help her appreciate the outdoors as she grows up. So my ultimate question is what are the "little" things a father may not think about when it comes to a daughter enjoying the outdoors with her father? Is there any thing your father did that sticks out in your mind? Is there anything he might have done differently that may have made the experience more memorable? Or am I just stressing out too much?

Thank you for your time and thoughts. An extra special thanks for your contributions to better the cause of the outdoors.

Help! Looking for someone to teach me how....

Hi My name is Heather and I'm 38 years old. I am also married with children. I am anxious to learn how to hunt deer, elk, etc. I want to learn how to hunt without baiting. I am in southern CA and can not go outside of CA for now. I am looking for a buddy/partner not a relationship. I'm looking for someone who's willing to teach me in person, via phone or email.

I know how to shoot, have been around loaders firearms all of my life. Carried for work prior. Have torn them down and put them back together. I know what I'm doing with a firearm. But I am always willing to learn more. I've gone on many trips to the gun ranges with my dad, out into the badlands for targets. I was raised with safety.

I want to hunt, I want to bring home the venison.

I don't mind weather you are male or female. Just as long as you're around the same age. Again I am only looking for a buddy/friend.

Lady Hunters

Hello everybody. I recently found this website and I absolutely love it. I love looking around the message boards. There is usually something interesting to find wherever you look. One thing that caught my attention was this forum. It's for ladies but there aren't very many topics listed to talk about. So I thought I would pose the question why. Why is there nothing for women to talk about? I have my opinion on almost everything and I'm sure any other woman would say the same so why is the ladies forum so bare?

New to hunting

Alright. I have always been interested in hunting. However, I have not gone yet. I just went through the NC hunter safety education course so I can get my hunting license. However, I do not have a rifle as of yet. The issue I have is that I have weak wrists. When I go trap shooting I have issues with going past one box of shells. I am curious what the ladies think would be a good rifle for me to start with for deer hunting. Thank you for your time and assistance.

Training a puppy

Has anyone ever trained a puppy to follow a blood trail.
We had to put to sleep the best dog ever and I miss him so much. I know you can't replace the best but I have been thinking of getting either a Jack Russell or a Rat terrier (that is what Jeffy was) and trying to train him to find wounded or harvested animals that can't be found by the hunters.
I have no idea where to start (yeah, I know you have to get the puppy first). Just wondered if anyone has ever done this and had any luck at it.
Thanks...
JB
