I'm heading in for retina surgery on my good eye Tuesday morning. I had three detachments in my left eye during 2003-2004 but, in spite of the odds, it was saved. Sort of. I have 20/40 corrected in that eye but vision is twisted and it's a struggle to fight my way through the chart. Now my good eye - my shooting eye - has a brown floater that won't go away. Looks like the retina is starting to fall away in that eye. They're going to try to nail it back down with laser. Retina laser surgery can be EXTREMELY painful. Like a cattle prod going off inside my brain. Uggh! Anyway, my hunting days may be numbered.
The point of all this is, if you don't know what the symptoms of a rentina detachment are, YOU NEED TO EDUCATE YOURSELF. Now! Spontaneous detachments can happen to anyone. But those folks who are nearsighted are particularly vulnerable, as are diabetics or folks with high blood pressure. When the retina starts to detach, the symptoms can be simply annoying and are often ignored until a full blown detachment is well underway. By then the odds are falling fast that it can be repaired. Quick treatment in the early stages is extremely important.
Here's a site with information on the symptoms. Check it out. Please.

Sorry to hear of your eye troubles. I hope and pray that all goes well with the surgery and you are quickly back on the mend! Get well soon. You may have some trouble reading the F&S blog for a while, but let us know how things progress.
Is any of this due to high recoil rifles and shotguns? For some reason I did not recall you being a big magnum fan.

Ontario Honker-

I sincerely hope that your surgery is successful. Do what you're told and take is as easy as you can and keep us all posted on your progress. You have friends here.
OHH,
Good luck with your surgery. We'll all be pulling for you.
I have struggled with eye health all of my life. Most of the damage is genetic but I also severely damaged my eye playing basketball. Hopefully your doctors are as goos as the one that put me back together.
Ontario,
That is a real bummer. We will all hope for the best. I have been in and out of hospitals so much the last seven years I am on a first name basis with all the emergency room help. keep your chin up and we will keep you in out thoughts
Ontario Honker Hunter,

Ontario,
Will be thinking of you tomorrow morning. Keep the faith, we are all here for you
ontario i hope it can be repaired and my thoughts and prayers are with you .
I know you may not read this until sometime after your surgery. I hope all goes well and you are soon back providing us with your top notch stories and insights. Hey, be careful with that socialized medicine up there.
O man that stinks. God bless and my prayers are with you.
Thank you all. Means a lot. Really.
Laser surgery was about ten minutes of hell, as usual. Man that hurts even with a couple of Tylenol-3 in the gizzard. I broke down before he could get the other spot nailed down so I'll have to go back again. I didn't know there was more than one spot to worry about! The big brown floater is gone and that's a relief. Sort of. I was convinced that it was something going on with the lens and not the retina. Guess I was wrong, unfortunately. Lens issues are no big deal. Better get off here. Bright screen is bothering me. Thanks again.
Another reminder for all of you to check out that site on retina detachment symptoms. It's good knowledge to have around the house. Early detection made the difference - this time.
Good to hear everything went well OH! I have as uncle going thru the same, hope your next procedure goes as well and fixes all. How'd they get the floater out? They'd have to use a mini starwars lazer to zap all the floaters I have.
Hoping the surgery went well and prayed that the recovery would be quick and complete!
O.H.
Glad to hear you weathered the first surgery well, Good luck to you with your future procedure wishing you all the best .
Cgull, better have that checked out. Persistent floaters is one of the signs of retina coming loose. Can also be a sign of getting old. Not sure what can be done about the second diagnosis. Better phone God for a cure on that one. If you live in Canada it will be a local call. Heh, heh.
My floater disappeared because the eye surgeon nailed the retina back in place with laser. It was apparently loose in a spot but not yet detached and fallen away completely. The receptors on the back side of the retina were not making good contact, hence the brown opaque floater that I could sorta see through. That was a close one.
Ontario,
Bravo. Good triumphs over evil again. Sorry you have to have another one, ouch.
OH... Get well soon and take it easy... Do what the docs say.
Ontario,
Get better soon. Prayers sent and best wishes.

Floater is back. Big time. I can hardly read. Vision is clear but what I'm seeing in the floater isn't registering in my brain. Like I'm seeing through it. Crud. Very annoying. Back to the hospital tomorrow.
Thanks guys.
They will get it right this time. Keep us posted
I hope everything goes well!!!
I hope all goes well!
Prayers and best wishes Ontario. Keep up the positive attitude, it will get you through this.
Hey Honker,
How you doing?I hope all is well.
Get better man. Sight is one of the most important things God gave you. Lets's all hope you heal.
Honker
We don't know how to get it touch with you but there are a whole lot of concerned people here that are pulling for you. If you feel up to it and sight allows, give us an update. God bless you brother!
Just noticed this thread Honker... sorry to hear of your problem and am wishng you the best. Get well soon!
Thank You for raising awareness about the relevance of eye/vision health and hunting. I have noticed as I raise my fitness level, my vision improves, and vitamins and nutrition play a role in eye health. I hope the surgery goes well, all of our days in the field are numbered and I cherish mine.
You're in our evening prayers as we sit for dinner. I hope this storm passes quickly and no longer poses a problem.
The editors passed an email telling OHH that we wish him well and would like to hear from him soon. We'll se if he replies.

Still no word huh?
Nothing yet from the online editor or OHH.
It has been almost 3 months now. Lets hope he gets better.
Best wishes for a sucessful surgery.
I just found this thread. Hope Honker is well.
Two weeks ago I got a floater in my right eye and went to the DR. right away. Next day had lazer surgery to repair a torn retina. He is not kidding about the pain. This was much worse than the laser job I had 2 years ago to correct my vision.
Anyone hear anything yet?
Not a peep.
The best I can come up with is a 2007 Ontario plate number from page 3 of his photos. If anyone has any contacts...
Is anyone know for sure that the editors contacted Honker?
I don't believe so
So sorry not to get back to all of you. As you have probably figured, I'm not doing very well. My eye is gradually getting worse and there's nothing more they can do for it. But it is the least of my problems right now. I finally picked up a fishing license today and had hoped to get out tomorrow. See if I can get up to it. Bought a nice top of the line canoe a few weeks ago as a present for my wife. As a kid she was a canoe ranger in Eastern Canada. Sadly, she's not very interested in it. I have been out paddling around a pond in town with the dogs. They travelled well in it. I'd give anything to have a good photo of the three of us "voyageurs".
Again, I'm so sorry not to get back to you folks sooner. It's been a real tough time. So sorry to cause you all so much worry. Thanks so much for your kind thoughts and prayers. It means the world to me right now.
Yes, the editors did contact me but it was several weeks before I got to my email.
Great to see you on line any way. Hopefully you'll be getting your line into the water soon.
Welcome back Honker. Sorry to hear the bad prognosis. I know the guys on here were worried sick of your sudden departure.
I'm happy to hear you and your dogs are enjoying the new canoe. They are truly mans best friend.
I've always said God has given you so many sunsets, but I never thought of it happening this way :(
I pray everything goes well
Glad you're back Honker. Sorry to hear of your troubles, and here's to hoping that you get to use that license soon.
Hang in there, Honker. When God closes a door he opens a window. You never know, this may be your launching pad for a bestselling book or a life-changing blog.
