It's on the PBS Nature series, and I see that here in West Mich the show will air at 8pm today. Click here for a teaser for the show: http://video.pbs.org/video/1408031583/
Should be a must watch for all that can. Shows one of the dangers of releasing non native species into habitats, be it plant, fish or wildlife.
Alien species that threaten ecosystems, habitats or species

They should allow mass HUNTs and kill a many as they can find, feed the Alligators!
How much bounty would make it worthwhile and attractive to go after them? Or, is there a good market for the skins?
I'd hunt them for free. I believe FL has regulations to hunting some of its invasives. (not 100% sure)
If the financial inducement was adequate then sportsmen and kids would more likely go hide to leather after them, and could make a dent in the population.
I'd hunt them under a contract that says I get to keep the skins and the meat is donated to gator and croc farms.
The State would have to provide an airboat and shells or re imburse me for my ammo expenses.
These exotics need open season bounties and yr long hunting.
To ensure only exotic snakes are killed Hunters should go through a wild life identification course and sign a contract stating they will only hunt exotic snakes no matter the season while using equipment / shells purchased by the state and while on company time
I've had rattler. I wonder what python tastes like.
I wouldn't even need my ammo to be reimbursed. Although I wonder, since they live on/around the water, could we use lead shot and lead hollow points on them?
With ammo prices lead at $6.00 to $10.00 a box of 25
Steel or Environmetals goin for $14.00 to $30.00 for a box of 10 to 25
Your pocket money will dry up fast and any misses will hurt more than the recoil on your 20 ga. or 12 ga So realistically speaking some type of re imbursement would be necessary especially if you're taking time off work (unpaid) to hunt the invasive species that were not properly addressed, controlled upon the knowledge of their release to include stricter laws on importation of the invaders.
Not to mention gas, boat maintenance or rentals, vehicle gas, food and other necessary fees to complete mission.
Moishe, I saw the program and the pythons were chowing down on the gators!
I did hear that the recent cold snap in FL killed a bunch of the exotics but theres still plenty of em down there...
I caught a bit of the program this weekend. Very interesting points. Kind of odd that it was brought back to the top by spam... weird.
With the problem I don't see the problem with an open season year around, unless there is a problem with being in the Everglades at certain times of the year. I would think that the hides would be worth some money.
So what would you use? I'm thinking 870 12 gauge with #6 or #4 and full choke/turkey choke.
