Michigan DNR Director Humphries and her chiefs of staff were all in attendance, assisted by several other DNR employees and a facilitator (perhaps 15 in all). They were obviously taking this quite seriously. The DNR is looking for input to help prioritize their efforts in light of probable budget reductions.

Attendees were split up into small groups, each facilitated by a DNR employee. The charter and current activities were reviewed. Attendees discussed and wrote down what they felt were important to them. Each response was read in front of the entire group and then posted in related groups. Then everyone was asked to initial the one item considered most important.

Interesting that the groups with the highest organized representation were trail riders (horses) and ATV owners. They were followed by Ruffed Grouse Society (RGS) members. The decision affecting horse access in the Pigeon River area ensured the trail riders' continued involvement. The ATV riders want input on access and trail conditions. The RGS is trying to drive habitat improvement. A few people opposed to clearcutting sat with some RGS members. They left with an altered viewpoint. Others were concerned about noise around shooting ranges, sale of public lands, and environment / preservation / access. Seemed everyone was concerned about education. You need to attend these events to ensure your voice is heard.
