Should Deer season's be longer or shorter? i understand a long season allows more people to enjoy the hunting, but it realy stresses the deer population. michigan deer are harassed from late September to December, with no real breaks!! Our population is down, and its hard to find deer, let alone big bucks. What do you think? has this been a problem in your nec-of-the-woods?
In WV bow season came in Oct. 1 and lasts till Dec. 31- 3 months
Buck season- 2 weeks
Doe season- 4 weeks
Muzzleloader season- 1 week
Our deer get hammered pretty good.
In Florida we need a longer Doe season our Doe to bucks are 12 to 1...only 5 day season.??
I wouldn't complain if WV shortened the doe/antlerless seasons a bit.
Longer seasons are fine if the population supports it. As far as deer populations in michigan are concerned, i'd think a harsh winter would be more to blame? Also, longer seasons means more educated deer. I don't think it's a problem.
Addendum - buddy of mine has an analytical way of looking at things and he made the observation that we have had the "perfect storm" in the Virginias over the last few years; two severe winters in three years, an increased bear population that takes fawns in the spring, coyotes that hunt 365 days a year, and seasons that appear to be too liberal coupled with what could be lax check in practices in Virginia all combine to hurt the deer herds badly.
In SE Ak the season opens July 15 and closes Dec 31. There are not alot of people but the people are very likely to be deer eating predators. I really like the twin concepts of allowing the harvest of deer when they taste the best, and having a season long enough so that hunting is an option not a necessity on a daily basis. The short seasons common in the lower 48 put a lot of pressure on people.
I am sure that Michigan is like any other State. Once the shooting begins, the deer, especially the big bucks, will feel the pressure and they will gravitate towards areas where they feel less pressure like private land and further back into the woods where fewer hunters go. I think, even with a season half as long, and if you are hunting public land, you might find similar results.
