Tree Stands

Uploaded on December 06, 2009

I want to buy a tree stand to use next deer season. The problem is me and my dad hunt on all public land. He said thayt i shouldn't get one because i can't leave it up over night because people might steal it. I don't know what to do. Is it easy to put up a stand in the dark and should I get one.

I would get one but i would not put one up in the dark. I too hunt public land and I leave my stands out. all are locked, all are somewhat hidden. I do not visibly mark my trail, rather I use the route of least resistance to my stands and maybe a few reflective tacks at needed intersections. You flag a trail in public land and all will know your spot. I do have problems with other hunters setting in my stands and it bothers me. I try to put up stands in the middle of the day and preferably just before a rain so the rain may wash any scent I might leave behind. Set up down wind where you expect deer to move and try not to over cut shooting lanes or mark your traisl so others can follow your path. Wait till season has past to cut good shooting lanes, this will not bother the deer as much as cutting lanes just before your hunt. Try to put up more than one stand so if the wind is wrong you'l have others to hunt and it makes it harder to oever hunt one stand. Good luck and good hunting

When I hunted in Illinois on public land we got there the da before to put up stands and lock them to the tree. yes flagging may bring theives in. I use a GPS to get in, or use the reflective markers. They are small enough to be missed by most walking through. Good luck

Climbers are a decent option for that situation. You have to be more selective about trees and its kind of a pain to climb in the dark, but they are comfortable and portable. I have a summit viper and i like it for bowhunting.

Sorry buckhunter, SUMMIT ! ! !
YES you should. You should practice in the light, and get a cap/light to help in the early A.M. as someone suggested.
