Treestand Safety

Uploaded on October 06, 2011

A buddy of mine was bowhunting last weekend, 18' up in a ladder stand. He felt faint and when he came to, he was leaning over the shooting rest of his stand with a broadhead pointed back toward him, restrained by his safety harness. What a ringing endorsement of proper treestand safety! Let's get those harnesses on, folks!!

Like I tell everyone in class. There are only two types of people that use treestands. Those who have fell out of them and those who are going to fall out of them. The last several years that has been the No. 1 killer of hunters in WV, non use of a safety harness. Most hunters think that it only happens to the other guy.

I talked to bowhunter Clark last evening and was telling him about it. He was understandably interested and agreed, we need to remember that one for the next class. I'm going this evening to look for a life line for my stands, hope to be in the trees next weekend. How's the knees?

Knee is doing good. They finally found the plane that went down in the Peru area. It went down Sun. night in the icy conditions. We had a great few days at Pigeon Forge. Tenn. My 11 year old grandson killed a deer with his bow Tue. evening. He hunts out of a pop-up blind near a white oak tree. That is the 2nd deer he has killed with his bow.

Glad you're perking along. Thankful for finding the plane, folks down the road from me heard it go over. You know that's just a hop, skip, and a jump across the mountain. I know you're enjoying those times with the kids, as you should.

Yesterday was the first time i actually was harnessed in while climbing. If i'm going to fall that's when it would most likely happen. I have worn a safety belt, then harness, for many years but was always vulnerable when climbing. Strap yourselves in.

The first 10 years of tree stand hunting, I was young and foolish and did not wear one. I've worn one now for about 20 years.

My neighbors son fell out of a hang on stand a few years ago while hunting alone. He was lucky to wake up about a half hour later with only a sore back.

Yes, the young man was lucky. We lost on of our Hunter Safety instructors a year or so ago when he fell backward while climbing to his stand. I have been hesitant to use a stand ever since. Now have the climbing variety and gettin it ready for the rut in Al.
