Urgent, Major threat to Wildlife Management, Hunter Ed. as we know it now.

Uploaded on October 07, 2012

I don't want this post to be political but someone in the Obama Whitehouse has proposed to rob the Wildlife Restoration Trust Fund, the Sport Fish Restoration Trust Fund and the Recreational Boating Fund of billions of dollars under the guise of "saving the polar bears."
In WV alone we received last year over 250 million dollars of these funds to spend on wildlife related projects. You may be familiar with the Wildlife Restoration Act as the other name Pittman and Robertson Act of 1936 and the Sport Fishing Restoration Trust Fund by the Dingell-Johnson Act of 1950. These acts placed an excise tax on sporting goods purchased by sportsman and then were distributed back to the states according to the number of license purchased in that state. Every state stands to lose millions and millions if this goes through. This same thing was tried in 1985 through the Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act and enough pressure was put on the congress that it didn't pass. You can check with your local conservation dept. and find out how much they will lose but WV will lose 40% of their wildlife budget. We would lose all of the money that we operate our Hunter Education program with. I was at a board meeting of our state Hunter Education Instructors and one of the guys from the state office was there and gave us the information. He was not a liberty to get too vocal and the states are depending on the sportsman to carry the torch.
The Act that they are trying to rob the money under is the Sequestration Transparency Act of 2012 ( P.L. 112-155 ) It is urgent that we take action now to protect the hunting, fishing and boating heritage of our nation. I can't express strongly enough just how important this is and the importance of you contacting your Senators and Congressmen. I will probly be getting updated news day by day. Just for your information Hoski this isn't a crazy e-mail, this if the life of every Conservation Department in the US.

OK Sarge,
I understand your intention was not to be political about this subject, but you made it political by stating that "someone" in the Obama White House proposes to raid federal dollars from states' wildlife funds.
You need to understand that the sequestration act was an act of Congress and not the Obama administration. It is a firm set of consequences Congress placed on themselves for failing to negotiate successfully on the debt ceiling. Currently there is one party wiggling desperately to avoid the consequences they placed on themselves...I need not ID which.

Politics aside, I have contacted my legislators and voiced my concern on the issue.
Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Thank you for contacting your legislators. The same thing was tried in 1985. This would be a terrible blow to wildlife departments in every state.

Agreed.
As an aside,my thoughts on the sequestration act as a whole aren't flattering. I think Congress as a whole abdicated their duty to the country by depending on a few elected legislators to do the work normally taken on by all of them on such an important subject.
I'd like to see 535 new faces in Congress.

Long read...

www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/omb/assets/legislative_reports/st...

On pg 79-80 it has listed the different "things" that are on the chopping block. i.e. where they can take funds from. Which is most everything! Pg 117 deserves a look as well.
