Anyone disappointed with the ANSWERS blog?

Uploaded on March 09, 2009

I enjoy reading the blogs, message boards, and answers sections of this web site. I know there are a lot of knowledgeable folks who contribute very insightful information to the discussions on this web site. But, I have to be honest; the quality of questions in the Answers section is to the point that quite frankly it is starting to be a waste of time. How many times is "What is your favorite gun", "What is your favorite bow", "what is your favorite lure" going to be asked? I'd like to see more questions like "What are the advantages and disadvantages to a control fed action?".

Maybe I'm just getting bitter in my old age. If so, just vote me down on this one.

I agree with both. When I first got on here I really enjoyed reading through the questions, but now it seems that most of the new people are only interested in getting more points for more stars. I have also noticed that some are even answering thier own qusetions, more than once. Some will even post 7 or 8 times on the same questions, instead of doing it in 1. I wish that they would get thier points taken away for this!
I can understand if you ask a question and someone posts and asks for more info, but to be the first one to answer your own qusetion, to me that is someone that is just looking for points.

I would have to agree, I'm glad to see so many people using the website to gain knowledge but its getting a little ridiculous as to how many times people ask the same generic questions. I also wish there was some way to delete repeated answers so people aren't getting extra points when there computer freezes.

I agree completely, to many are worried about stupid points and just keep posting. Many of the things they start a blog for should really be on 'message board', but it doesn't get as much attention so they don't. The answer section is so easy to talk I can see why people don't use message board much.

It seems to be the same people that always ask the stupid questions; how is your day? what does it mean when your farts don't smell? does anyone eat flour?. All those questions are stupid and should be removed. Along with that are the people that answer multiple questions with; I agree with... I don't really care if you simply agree with a person, at least try to personalize your answer a little more by adding why you agree with them. If someone really answers a question exactly the same way you were going to, then there is no reason for you to answer that question anymore.

Posting this just for the points . . . seriously, some of the questions are pretty lame, but because of the anonymous nature of the interwebs, the poster could be 8 years old. It wouldn't be a bad idea for the editors, hint, hint, to do some judicious editing from time to time. Maybe starting by eliminating questions that have been asked previously would be an easy way to trim the fat. Then examine some of the fart and flour questions and decide if they really add anything to the site. I have my own outdoor blog, and it's difficult to know how much pruning one should do. Somebody post that you agree with me, and then I'll post again thanking you. That's a joke, of course.

Hmmm, Clay, it's been a while...

Most I've fired the 14 from is 500 meters. Yes, meters. Pendleton had the Corps' only metric range.

From 200 to 300 = 0 clicks. From 300 to 500 = 2 clicks.

Now based on the "ramp" vs. drop off, multiply the cosign of the angle change from the 200 to 300 differential, and officially, you have... er... several.

As for the "post wave" from a single user thing, I generally ignore the one-liners like;
"What's your favorite sport, Ford or Chevy?"
"Do you hunt deer or Remington?"
"I like dirt, do you?"

Some of the questions are repeated quite often, but I think a lot of it is due to the fact we have new posters who don't really look through the old posts, they are trying to be active and involved so they ask questions. Some may be a repeat of a previous question, but I think it's a good thing in the fact that it genereated activity and intrest among the new member, if they get a bunch of flack for asking a question they most likely will leave and go somewhere else.

There is a lot of good info and knowledge to be gained in the answers section, even if some of it is repeated multiple times.

Just my opinion

Yooper, I'm glad you resurrected this thread. I had no idea that "points" were awarded for anything. And I'm still not clear what the point of the points is. Maybe I missed something in the fine print when I signed up. Anyway, I don't post for points. I have seen some questions about getting equipment to test so maybe that's it? If that's the case, F&S doesn't need to give me points because I have all the stuff I need.

I also don't care for the "chit chat" that plugs up the answers section. It takes time to get back through the pages even if you've got a souped up computer and high-speed connection. It is annoying to have to go back through several pages and find about a third (or even half) filled with personal stuff. Other forums I have been on had a "private messanger" capability so members could contact each other. They usually don't store very many messages which is fair. Sure helps cut down on some unnecessary junk and is also a way for us to give someone else our email address without broadcasting it to the world. THAT is very important.

This forum is loosely monitored and that doesn't bother me too much. I've had some bad experiences with monitors - and some really great ones too. Had one who went in and changed my profile image to a stupid ape and then started monkeying around (pardon the pun) changing my posts to read like I was an idiot. Had others who were very good at stepping in to stop fights, usually before they happened. Hopefully we can continue to live without monitors and still retain some integrity on this forum - on our own.

I could care less about spelling or grammar. It may take a little time to decipher some of these but that's okay. Some kids these days actually make an effort to insert gobbelty gook and run every sentence together, no punctuation, no caps, etc. That's cool for them. It's not very cool reading for me but I'm not going to impose my standards on them. I will do my best to set a good example, though.

I just waded through seven pages of absolute drivel and found a total of one thread worthy of comment. I understand that F&S is going to clean up this site. My suggestion would be a chat room for the kids that think thats what Answers is. And then a separate forum for the sharing of hunting and fishing information like the Answers was intended to be. It would be almost impossible for F&S to regulate who gets on where, so the serious outdoorsmen and women would need to ride herd on it by ignoring the kiddie posts. Maybe if the kiddies have their own site they can do their unintelligible texts and play out their petty rivalries and ask the same stupid childish questions over and over and over and leave Answers alone. And Answers can once again be worth opening.

Grouse, the situation was getting real bad. You have hung on the Message board pretty much and I enjoy your thoughtful responses and ideas (especially on dogs and training). However, some of the crap that was going on in the Answers section was way out of hand. At one point there was seven straight pages of nonsense. It has cleaned up A LOT in the last day or two (about a thousand percent) but I'm still seeing the same person who keeps reposting the same question over and over again simply rephrased. Very unimaginative points stuffing. I have tried to be nice (even asked him "please") but he won't get a clue. Pretty obvious what he's up to. Wouldn't care except I have to wade through that garbage day after day and when there's five or six guys doing it at once, the forum becomes so mired in fluff that it's useless. I don't give a feathery fart about points and I think you are on the same page in that respect. No one's pointing a finger at you. It is nice to see it getting back to where it was. Some of the repeat questions and answers I really don't mind. That is the same on any web site now. One of my technical PC sites is much, much worse than F&S.

Even at that, the one thing that does irk me is snap answers without any qualification. If I say I like a certain rifle, or you say it, I want to say (or know) WHY that choice was made. You get much more usable info if someone picks a particular round BECAUSE that round behaves a special way.

mr. grouse,
The number of stars you have by your handle doesn't mean you have a lock on things, or you want to be the big boss. If you have seniority issues look at Clay Coopers total..if points are your game. A lot of us here have openly espoused the 'points thing' as secondary, if even NOT important as time goes on. Youngsters and 'newsters' sometimes see points=free stuff. IMO you have a higher probability of a Remington 870 falling out of a moving UPS truck and landing by your curbside than getting to review gear here. If you like the banter and the back & forth, along with some really good advice, look no further. Is it perfect? Hell no. Show me something on the web that is....

If you ask a good question, you'll generally get a slew of good answers.
If you make a good comment, you'll get a nod(maybe as a +1) or a return comment. If you have something to say that stimulates conversation, it's all the better. On the flip side, if you ask a dumbazz question, or give a subpar answer, or ask a rapid-fire string of worthless questions, with topics like "What is better .270 or 30/06?", you will start to see folks that have long since tired of seeing them and get some heat for posting it.

A five-star genius has and gets as much or as little respect as a one star noob. It's all in what you want there, mr. grouse....you get what you give.

On the other hand I saw a question posted about gun cleanign and at first thought this guy is joking right? but we need to remember there are folks out there who really have no clue about some of this stuff, but just the same rather than re-posting a topic or question it would be nice if people would look before they post obivously if you can use a computer you can read right?

mr. grouse,
The number of stars you have by your handle doesn't mean you have a lock on things, or you want to be the big boss.

I would have to agree, I'm glad to see so many people using the website to gain knowledge but its getting a little ridiculous as to how many times people ask the same generic questions. I also wish there was some way to delete repeated answers so people aren't getting extra points when there computer freezes.

Yeah its a little troublesome seeing the same old boreing questions, but in the same sense, some people like to see what other people like so they can use it or whatever.
Some like to follow while others lead.

Im just glad to see a site that ACTUALLY uses the "answers" part of the page.

And to comment on the They're just new, When I started posting I went to page one and read from there, just like a book. That way I got a feel for who posts what, how often, and how credible I thought they were. Fisher girl- Maybe I'm one of the offenders. I do at times get involved with another poster answering a question and will answer back or respond by another posting. I really like the conversation and the sort of brotherhood of like thinkers I see here. I never think about points or stars or any of that foolishness. That stuff is for kids, not old guys like me, what on this earth could I possibly want except for more days and to share what I know.

Hmmm, Clay, it's been a while...

Most I've fired the 14 from is 500 meters. Yes, meters. Pendleton had the Corps' only metric range.

From 200 to 300 = 0 clicks. From 300 to 500 = 2 clicks.

Now based on the "ramp" vs. drop off, multiply the cosign of the angle change from the 200 to 300 differential, and officially, you have... er... several.

As for the "post wave" from a single user thing, I generally ignore the one-liners like;
"What's your favorite sport, Ford or Chevy?"
"Do you hunt deer or Remington?"
"I like dirt, do you?"

Some great stuff brought up the last couple of days.
