Hunting
Hi there, new to this forum, but post under this username at www.gunco.net
So my dad gave me a Browning X Bolt rifle(7mm rem mag) 4 months ago and I just got back from putting it through the paces.
Everything was fine untill 300 yards plus.
Keyholing began to show up immed and some bullets hit the paper SIDEWAYS.
We tried different shooter as well as 139, 154, 169 grain ammo...all factory Hornady.
No dice.
I called Browning and they wouldnt even give me the benefit of the doubt by issuing me a return auth number.
When I asked them(I spoke to several people that were supposedly "in charge" at Browning) if they could duplicate this problem at their facility, they told me "Browning only gaurantees 2' MOA at 100 yards.."
The problem doesnt EXIST at 100 yards, nor did I ASK for a 7mm Rem Mag to shoot at 100 yard targets..
no dice..
BUYER BEWARE when it comes to the X Bolt. I am supremely dissapointed in so many ways but it hurts the most when a company that is a large as and enjoys such a great reputation (for whatever reason)wouldnt even give the customer the benefit of the doubt when he told them that his BRAND NEW 4 month old rifle doesnt work.
I will NEVER recommend Browning to anyone
I will NEVER purchase Browning or Winchester rifles if I can help it
I will make SURE that all people that consider the X Bolt as their next purchase, know what they are getting when they Buy a Browning product(made in China).
I WILL be buying a Remington 7mm Rem Mag
I WILL be sending this rifle back to Browning with No return label and a nasty letter.
They can keep that Junk, I wont have it in my house
OR you could just send it to me and I'll pretend it's a bow.
It probably has the wrong rate of twist. I agree that this is infuriating.
Don't hold back man, let us know how you REALLY feel.
Get some good ammo. Try Federal Barnes TSX or Remington factory loads before you throw it under the bus. I have had 3 misfires with Hornady .30-06 ammo and I'll never buy it again, nor PMC.
did you ever clean the thing?
Like CJ said, did you try ANY other ammo? Everybody knows different rifles(even same lot) like different types of ammo, (all guns will have a brand/type they like best).By the way you do know that Winchester rifles are being produced in a factory in North Carolina now, by the same company that makes M-4s/M-16s for our troops, don't you. I take it the Browning/Winchester comment was directed to the fact the are both owned by U.S. Repeating Arms Comp.
if you still gotta pay for it, you can send that gun to me instead of Browning!!!
I own several Brownings, and an X-Bolt in 338 Win mag. I have handloaded ammo for this rifle and results are impresive. I like the x bolt, the BLR as well as the Browning pistols I own.
It sounds like an ammo issue more then a rifle issue to me, for I have never come across this issue before? DAVE P. Any suggestions to this fellow with X-Bolt problems other then trash the rifle?
Try more bullet types and weights.
first try different ammo if it is still messed up with every thing you try . keep on them and dont let up they will listen eventually my brother had trouble with a rem 597 same deal with Remington big song and dance and a lot of run around. he kept at it and they final listened to him took it in and sent him a new gun dont give up . the squeaky wheel gets the oil .
Man I wish I lived in your neighborhood, I would go out and duplicate what you have done and pined their ears back guaranteed!
Sounds like the bore is out of limits as if it were washed (worn) out.
Call them back and get a reference number and have a gun smith slug the bore!
Not shooting groups is one thing; bullet tumble is totally different because of a defective barrel! 139, 154, 169 grain ammo...all factory Hornady and key holed?
O’would I like to take a crack at them!!
Sell the POS at the next gun show or online after you try a box of Federal 160 grain TBBC or 160 grain Speer Mag Tip handloads with one grain under max load of Reloder 25 AFTER a thorough cleaning with CR-10 followed by a cleaning with Hoppe's Benchrest. If it won't shoot those loads, cut your losses and sell.
WA Mtnhunter is right, Sale it at the next gun show :(
I find it best at times to cut your loses and to move on. I would recomend a Remington 700 BDL. For out of the box only one rifle in my lifetime I never had or seen a problem except one time. Someone ran over it with a forklift! Sale it at the next gun show.
By the way WA Mtnhunter made me think of something, do you have copper build up inside the bore?
Have you checked the twist rate of the rifling? That should be a reason the rifle would 'keyhole', i.e. failing to stabilize the bullet. Or a really oversized bore?
Those Brownings must not what they used to be. Several of my buds shoot A-Bolts and are extremely pleased with them and I can personaly attest to their accuracy in the field.
WA Mtnhunter
The rate of twist for the bullets he used wouldn't have done it. It's a defective barrel that is oversize or was sold a used gun that was shot out
True, the wide range of weights would have accounted for a wrong twist rate. Rebarrel or sell. I would sell!
