Crossbows: like em, hate em?

Uploaded on October 15, 2009

Crossbows have take the point of of bow hunting. I myself am an avid bow hunter who respects anyone using a re-curve of compound bow. Anyone under the age of 50 or someone with no disability should not be able to use a crossbow in archery season. Its pretty much like shooting a gun. I don't care if they use a crossbow in firearm season but they shouldn't be allowed to use one in bow season.

Crossbows are for the handicapped. Anyone can shoot a crossbow honestly you want a real challenge pick up a recurve or compound bow. for one its alot harder to draw back on an animal than it is to hold a crossbow up. I've seen people that have never shot a gun in there life shoot a crossbow from thirty yards and have arrows touching.I agree with this article honestly crossbow hunters grow a set and step up to the big leages

A bow is a bow. It still has the same kill range as the compound (+10 yards or so). If you want to make it challenging, everyone should hunt with a re-curve or you should not be allowed to hunt from ground blinds. If you put the time in, get within 50 yards of an animal, crossbow or compound, it is still very challenging.

This debate is one of the many that is dividing sportsmen all over the country, and it's not even necessary. Who cares what weapon is utilized to harvest an animal? Whether you use a crossbow, compound bow, rifle, spear, or knife, the end result is still the same...meat in the freezer. So really...does it matter that much if hunters are using crossbows during archery season? I personally think we should be uniting our efforts and making progressive movements together rather than arguing with each other about the "best way" to kill an animal. Everyone's entitled to their opinion...but there are times when a differences in opinion distract us from the really important issues surrounding hunting and wildlife management...the crossbow issue is one of those distractions.

Here are some issues worth addressing:
-Increasing hunter recruitment by endorsing youth hunts, making hunter safety courses more available, and providing more hunting opportunities for the physically disabled and elderly.
-Increasing hunter access to private property
-Increasing the punishment for poachers, especially repeat offenders
-Increasing the amount of public land available to hunters
-Improve methods for funding "Hunters feeding the hungry" type programs
-Create programs to improve wildlife habitat

Anybody disagree? Can anybody think of other things that can be added to the list?

Well said Bioguy.

Here in Ohio we have allowed crossbows for years. They are no more lethal than compounds. All of my kids were weaned on crossbows and graduated to compounds. They are a good tool to get a young person involved in the sport.

The record book recognizes crossbow kills as primitive weapon kills which is parallel with muzzleloaders.

Also for the guy who has no time to practice with his bow I would much rather have that guy in the woods with a crossbow then running around wounding deer.

I'm not real picky about somebody using a crossbow but I will shoot a compound over any crossbow every time. I can't stand the way crossbows shoot. They don's seem to pattern well at all, at least not like a compound bow. I bought a crossbow, used it one season and sold it for a Hoyt compound.

By the way I DO shoot a cross-bow, Long bow, Compound, and recurves ! Love them all for diferent reasons.
Shooting a cross-bow this year just because it's been awhile.
No cross-bows in Colo(was a "bow guide" there by the way).
I "Robin Hooded" two the other day, it only took a week of shooting 2/3 hours a day !
hard is correct, "a bow is a bow". Did you know that cross-bows are what William Tell used to shoot the apple off his sons head ?
True story by the way.
I feel like BioGuy, and Ben Franklin do/did.
"Sir's we MUST hang TOGETHER, or surly we WILL hang seperatly !"

I don't like them, but respect them when used by those unable to draw a bow due to health or age. They are illegal in WV other than by special permit for those mentioned above, yet there are those who still use them illegaly in place of conventional archery tackle. That doesn't sit well.

I love my crossbow that my dad gave to me as a gift. I shoot carbon arrows and rage broadheads. If I had to do it again I would probably get a pse x-factor. I feel like it's cheating with a crossbow because it is essentially a gun.

My experience with Cross bows seems to mirror a regular bow? It is a relatively short range weapon, too heavy to carry, and needs to be "Cocked" while sitting in the blind waiting for game to come in range...it takes far less coordination to shoot one vs a bow I'll give you that advantage, but it is not a 100yd weapon!

I don't see anyhting wrong with using a crossbow during the archery season. It gives more people the ability to go out and enjoy the open air, plus it helps raise the number of people who buy licenses. I personaly don't think there should be any laws or restrictions against using them. It would only be fair to restrict inline muzzleloaders during primative season if you are going to restrict crossbows from archery season.

The only real difference is that with a bow you have to actually draw back, control your breathing, and line up a pin at the right distance. All of these things are minimal at best with a crossbow. Using a crossbow is all good, but if you can physically hunt with a compound than why not. The real issue is the fact that people all around the country shooting crossbows, is that they think they have a gun. A crossbow is not a gun. There are very few crossbows out there that can top all of the compounds on the market. The only one I know of is PSE's TAC 15. A crossbow shoots with the same trajectory as a compound. I feel that those with crossbows are going to think they can go out and sling arrows at 70 yards pretty easily. that is not the case. Alot more can happen to a bolt than a bullet. And because of this there will be many more wounded animals because people that think they have a gun will take more marginal shots.

anything that give more people a chance to hunt and enjoy the outdoors is great for me. I don't use a crossbow in a state that it is legal to use one, and I don't plan on changing. The one problem with a crossbow is that it doesn't have the same kinetic energy of a compound bow at distances longer than 30 yards. Most people who use a compound don't shoot much furthar than 30-35 yards, but people can get a false since of confidence with a crossbow which you could easly shoot accuratly at distances of 60 or 70 yards.
