How many of you feel that Christianity is the only religion in the United States that doesn’t get a fair shake? Everywhere I go today I see people having issues with the religion that I grew up with and feel comfortable with. As a nation we can’t say anything that might offend virtually any other religious organization but to offend Christians is perfectly acceptable behavior. Why has Christianity become the whipping boy of the religions?
There is Hinduism,Buddhism,Judaism,Islam and Christianity.In Chritianty there are many churches of differing views that all claim to be the voice of Christianty and in so doing offends other christians.So within Christianity how would you define yourself,are you the one with the big voice or the soft voice?
my true belief is that christianity is a way of life, not a specific religion. i feel we all need to treat others with the same respect that we would like. that is a true christian.
many of us Christians are too busy bashing other Christians. Baptists and Catholics bashing each other. I hate it but until all Christians get along how is anyone supposed to understand us?

Perhaps it is because Christianity is the religious faith of the majority of Americans. The rule seems to be that the majority is too big to take offense. That does not seem to be the rule in the Middle East. Or anywhere else in the world for that matter.

I was raised in the south, and have a thing against any Church proclaiming that everyone else in town is wrong.

"Christians" today are not following any ones teachings except the ones they agree with, but then do do most others.To include mine, We Have Hassidic , Ultra Orthodox,Conservative,Reform, Humanistic and "Messianic" Jews , none of which thinks much of the others.
The Catholics Have Roman,Russian, Greek and Coptics and Bishop Lefevres Schism with the sme results. Hardly any group respect the others, so what is the point?
There is a lot of difference in a true Christian and those who claim to be Christians. Faith is not bound to a particular sect, or denomination, an salvation is not ordained through membership to an organization. Some of the finest examples of true Christianity I know have no affiliation with any Church, as such, and if you asked what kind of Christian they are, would only answer,"One who believes in the Bible."

When Christians show that they actually understand and follow the teachings of Jesus, I respect that quite a bit, although I am not and have no desire to be christian myself, as I have my own faith. But self-rightious hateful people who use the Bible to excuse their petty prejudices and impose their double standards on others will never get any respect from me, none, NADA. That isn't what the Great Rabbi taught at all. Most of the so-called "christians " I encounter these days believe nothing like the Christ teaches in the Beatitudes, and would rather judge their neighbors than love them. How can anybody respect that. Then there is the fact that I have no respect for those who don't respect me, tit for tat. I know of quite a few self centered pseudochristians who think they are God's Gift to the World and I always chuckle with glee whenever such are humbled.

Well I can think of a couple other religions that havent been given a fair shake in America or by christianity either...LOL
But anyway The biggest issue is that the majority of christians today do not respect other people in the first place..Respect must be earned not given just because one choses to follow a certin religion...for years and years in this country it was almost unheard of that anyone would out right publicly defy and question the validity of christianity...and or question the self proclaimed authority of the christian church...People are getting smarter and in the last 30 years they are not falling for the myths and fables anymore..and they dont want christians or any other religous people telling them that they have to live their lives according to some set form of religous morality...The basic idea of respect that todays christians is that they want everyone to remain silent and accept their beliefs,they dont want people questioning them and asking for proof of their claims,they dont want people to resist the oppression that christians would and have placed on people in the last 500 years..they want everyone to conform to their views of how life should be lived.....Christianity has been on the decline for decades,as more and more becomes know and people get smarter they begin to drift away from fairtales...just as the Gods of olympus faded into the past when people became smarter and began to question those beliefs and actually realized that there wasnt a bearded old man in the sky throwing lighting bolts down on them....Christianity is headed in the same direction as more and more of its self proclaimed truths are revealed as mear imagination and myths created by primitive minds to account for things they had no knowledge of at the time........and the only reason you feel comfortable with it is because you were taught to be as a child,taught not to question the book of law,taught not to question the church pastor or its elders,this is called indoctrination by the church,,in simple form its brainwashing..

I am not "antichristian", I am anti pharisee, anti hyppocrite and anti self-rightious bozo. I am vehemently against those who would pervert the words of the Great Rabbi Yeshua to justify their petty prejudices or their political hegemony. As I have written in other threads, I really try to practice all religions simultaniously, because all true faiths teach the same basic Gospel. And I grew up in a faith that insisted it was the only possible Truth, so I have learned at some expense that Truth is not a Monopoly. The Divine Will, however you wish to label it, is indwelling in all beings, there are not a few who are of God and the rest soulless, We are all creatures of the Spirit as much as of the flesh, anyone who has the pain and privilege to be present at the dying of another (and is observant and reverent) can see this for oneself, when the spirit passes. To deny the spirit in another person is in a way, denying God. I am a Deist, not an atheist or agnostic, because I have absolutely no doubts on the existence of the Divine Will and the influence the Divine has on us all. I am not an anti christian, you homophobic self-rightious types are the antichristians because you misuse the teachings to bolster your own flailing egos and waylay the happiness of others. Yeshua taught love and compassion, that is the Way, and there is no other.

The social issues that "fundamentalists" go on about (whether they are Christian, Muslim, or Jew) are primarily based on sources other than the direct words of Yeshua. Proscriptions on Abortion (or for that matter, prostitution) are Old Testament based or are cited from the writings of mysogynistic men, like Saul/Paul or others, Yeshua's own words cover a wide range of subjects, but not abortion. He told the prostitute to "Go and sin no more". He said nothing about homosexuality at all, although when asked about eunichs He said (Mathew 9:11+12) "There are some who are made Eunichs by man and some who were made eunichs by Nature. Then there are those who make themselves eunichs for the love of God, he that will, let him."
I object to persons claiming their prejudices against women and gays are supported by the words and teachings of Yeshua, when the Great Rabbi says not one word to suggest such prejudices.
Yes such proscriptions are in Leviticus, which is in the Old Testament as commandments to the "children of Israel", but moderns who claim such rules apply to people not of semitic descent forget that there is a whole compendium of law they are ignoring there, just so they can pick and choose the rules they want, this includes the proscription on wearing mixed fibers, eating pork, shellfish or most seafood, as well as the requirement that Widows have to marry their brother-in-laws. If you are going to impose a few choice Levitical rules on me, you had better be willing to obey every last codicil yourself! That means no bacon cheeseburgers for you!
As I have posted I have known and loved some wonderful people who were christians, although I am inclinded to think they would have been every bit as nice had they been Bahai or Parsee (and I do know some very nice Bahai folks and some decent Parsees too).
Yeshua taught people to "love one another" and "turn the other cheek" and to "judge not lest ye be judged" but the strident social critics who call themselves "fundamentalists" seem to forget what Yeshua said. They would rather go out and smite people rather than turn the cheek. I understand the desire to smite what you don't like, but you can't call it "Christianity" unless you are driving the bankers out of the temple, like Yeshua did. I could respect that.
But as I have written before, I am descended of the peoples of the North, not the Levant. Levitical rules are not directed at me, my ancestors had their own rule and laws, which form our system of jurisprudence today. Do you think Yeshua got a jury trial? Hela no! that is a Norse tradition, like democracy itself! And if You, oh Rabbity one spent more time studying the actual words of the guy you claim to follow (and less time reading about genocidal old testament types), you wouldn't post some of the things you do!
My faith prizes Honor and Truth, Courage and Steadfastness. Whenever I find manipulative people who seek to dominate other weaker folk for personal gain I am filled with rightious umbrage. When I see double standards imposed for the benefit of the few I am angered. When I hear of supposed "christians" like Glenn Beck claiming social justice is a code for naziism I get outraged. I try to be honest in all my dealings, because an honest person can see through lies. As I have said, I do try to know what the Divine Will wants me to do and how to act, for myself and my own personal relationship with the Divine. I don't need a book written by anybody else centuries ago to do this, nor do I feel I should need to obey special rules put on persons in another society centuries ago either. If you wanna do so, go ahead (you might even be Jewish like Moishe), But no, your ancestors weren't the boss of mine, so you can't put their laws on me and not have me object strenuously. I LIKE bacon cheeseburgers and oysters too!
Oh and friends, I would never impose my faith on you, by force or fiat or otherwise. You couldn't pay the price I have paid for my faith, you'd run away in tears... Be glad that your God hasn't required of you what my Gods have asked of me, I paid an unimaginable price for my sacred vision. But you get what you pay for and having been through what I've been through, My faith is a rock, the visions I have been given are clear in my mind.
But even though I have been given sacred visions of the Divine, I would not ever sully that by imposing it on others, nor do I seek devotees or disciples. No tv show will ever shill for money in my name, and I will not lobby politicians to get policy changed to suit my worldview.
If you want a vision for yourself, go see a Medicine person and go on vision quest, do what you got to to get your own vision. When you have walked the vision path, and suffered enough, then the vision you will be granted will be your own personal vision.
My vision is my own, you can't have it, period, nor would I ruin it by using it to make mere money.

I never have understood religions that incorporate mind altering narcotics into their practice,many of which always state that no one can understand their religion unless they get doped up with some Psychoactive drug so they can see god and be given divine wisdom and guidence.
I would think that a divine entity who had the power to create an entire universe and all life with in it would atleast have the power to make him/her or its self known to a person without that person having to be stoned out of their mind on drugs..

There are eight known and recorded "paths" or methods for accessing the divine. One is through psychoactive substances, but I don't recommend that way (too many go insane when they encounter God unprepared), it may be cheap but it costs too much. There is ascetic practice, but that takes time and discipline (as well as the willingness to wear rags and eat nothing), there is the disciples path, but the pitfall there is what if your spiritual master is a fake? Then again submitting to a spiritual master means you trade your freedom for enlightenment. There is the ordeal path, which is of course very very painful (but very popular none the less, but will you still see God when the pain stops). then there is music, and dance, both of which can open the mind to God (but how do you get to Carnagie Hall- practice, practice). Then there is the Shamans path, but the spirits have to choose you, you don't get to choose it (but most spirit touched people want nothing to do with it, if they'd had their druthers). After that sensory deprivation is also a choice, but the problem is the same as with drugs (too many come out of the tank catatonic or just bonkers). Then there is simply dying and being sent back (awful risky, how you know they gonna send you back?) No path to the Divine is without risk or without a price, but you get what you pay for. Which path did I take? I ain't telling. There are many paths and they are all well trodden. Pick one that suits what you are willing to pay and again, you get what you pay for.
Many folks can go through life just fine without needing to confront the Divine, the happy warm fuzzies of dopamine release in church, mosque or synagogue work just fine for them. Others however need more and should go seek it, just never delude yourself that it is easy. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy.

Don't get me goin' friend, I already got told to watch what I say about them family wreckin' cultists. Still yer brain can make dopamine even in the cult barn, I did grow up in that friekin' cult and I can tell you all about 'em, including how they play both sides against the middle by having leading senators on both sides of the isle, so they can warp either party to get their way. To my lights, If Father Dreinan had to leave office because of "conflict of interest" than anybody who calls themselves "Reverend" or "priest" or "bishop" or "guru" should stick with spiritual matters and stay the heck out of temporal politics. The Mormons routinely dump boodles of cash into any issue they want their way on (like buying twit Romney's way into the Mass gubenatorial office, at least he had the same sense Sarah Palin did and didn't finish his term).
Ever thought it was funny how Las Vegas is surrounded by Mormon cult barns in Mormon planned suburban developments full of non-gamblin mormon folks who work as dealers, croupiers and pit bosses in those casinos they ain't suppose to fraternize with? Mormonism in a nutshell, right there. Biggest hypocrites on the planet and always ready to screw the "gentiles" for the "prophet". I look forward to the eventual return of Lake Bonneville, it will be the God's own justice to drown SLC so the freikin church police will need aqualungs to patrol Temple Square. I don't care how anybody finds God, or which God they find when they get there, but the lessons the Mormons taught me (in my misspent youth) were bitter, bitter, bitter.
I am just glad that I managed to regain faith in the Divine Will and it's ultimate goodness despite them and what they did to me and my dear family. Nuff said, I still am digestin' my supper.
Oh and I bodged the biblical reference a few posts ago, excuse me, that was Matthew 19, verses 11 + 12, not Matthew 9, which is a different scripture all together. I try to get things right, but I am still mortal.

I decided long ago that I would not be a religious person by any means. I consider myself spiritual. Religion is a man made topic, and it has done good and bad for societies through out history.
I am a Christian, and I believe in the Holy Trinity. I don't use the Bible to gay bash, and I do not use it for anything in political debates. I don't believe that God, or Jesus Christ was much of a politician. They were more like teachers and only offered guidance in how to live your life. I feel that mankind has perverted their ideas and also their teachings.
And the same can be said about most other religions as far as Hindus and also Muslims. We see this in the fact that many islamic extremists use the Koran to explain why they feel they need to take innocent life, and also why they hate infidel Americans.
We see how Hinduism can be perverted into the belief of reincarnation and also a Caste System that keeps people from becoming more then what they can actually become. I am a firm believer in the human spirit, and how it can do amazing things, even if you are a dirt farmer in the middle of BFE.
We see it in Christianity when men of the clothe steal money from people only wanting to donate to a righteous cause, or from a group like that Baptist organization that holds rallies at dead soldier and Marine funerals.
Do these people show a majority in their groups? Of course not. I live my life to try and be a good person and show respect to all people, no matter their color, religion, or creed. Is that being a good Christian? I think so. Is that being a good American? I think so.
Religion in my opinion should be a private matter. What I believe, may not be what you believe, but does that change anything on how I should treat you, or you to me? Nope.

Wow, Bella, reading your posts about LDS folks reminded me of many of the stereotypes I had heard about them growing up. Its totally different hearing a person formerly "on the inside" speak their minds like you did, and its refreshing.
If there was one cult that I'd really like to see get the same amount of criticism as Christianity,it has got to be a close between race Islam, and Scientology. I say that its close because I think most rational minded people would agree that Islam has become a cause celeb and many influential folks still try to float the lie about Islam being a religion of peace. I'll give them that they have a million different interpretations of their faith, but on the same token, who's telling the truth? The mainstream islamofacists that can't live peacefully with anyother religion or the non-vocal minority that claims to be a victim of radicals who have hijacked their religion. I'd like to see scientology get their tax exempt status revoked only because of a story I read a few years back about a woman who was a scientologist that wanted out, basically being held against her will and when she wanted to talk and tell all, she mysteriously died of meningitis in a Dallas hospital after Scientology lawyers pursuaded the doctors to release her to the church as per her signed power of attorney.

That means you will have no room whatsoever in any medicine cabinet for your shaving cream,razor and aftershave,because it will be filled with 3 times the amount of face cream,mosturizer, makeup,female anti-itch powders and other assorted strange looking personal care objects.

Does Christianity get a bum rap? Yes.
Why? Because it is the largest religion making it the biggest and easiest associated target. This is of course considering you group all denominations. Most all religions have sub-sects such as the Sunni and Shiite Muslims (just to name a couple which we have heard so much about as of late) or the Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana of Buddhism. Plus every group has it’s own numb-nuts (like the Kansas church that protested the funeral) who have screwed it up and pushed people away.
As a Christian it disgusts me to see the so-called church from Kansas do what they do. It is over-the-top, in-your-face, crude, and wrong when they hold up signs that read “God hates Gays” (as well as the other stuff they do). But it is just as over-the-top, in-your-face, crude and wrong to hold a “Gay Pride” parade that flaunts hedonistic men in leather thongs and bondage equipment in the town square for my children and I to see. Like I said, EVERY groups has it’s own A-holes that do the wrong things.
But I would like to sum up Christianity as best I can in this little post. If you disagree that is fine. I’m not judging you, so please don’t judge me. Take it for what it is worth and good luck.

I feel the reason why Christianity gets a bum rap, is because there are too many people that are Christians that don't want to make a big deal out of it.
When you see an episode of Family Guy, or Southpark and they show Jesus Christ or God, you could make the case that is HIGHLY offensive. I have seen some South Parks that could be considered extremely offensive to Jesus Christ and Christianity. Did I laugh at the jokes? Yes. But I also feel that Jesus Christ and God have a sense of humor.
Do any of these shows do that to Mohammad? Not one of them to my knowledge. Probably because when they make fun of the Lord, they may receive some complaints, but they don't receive letters saying they are going to get blown up or that their infidel comedy will be destroyed.
South park did make fun of Mohammed in an episode which he was depicted wearing a bear mascot suit since it was forbidden to show any image of the prophet,,this severly ticked off the muslims in the USA who loved watching south park make fun of jesus,but couldnt handle it when it came to thier holy man...
and wouldnt you know it they recieved a jihadd death threat from the muslims in new york....
Family guy has also made fun of all the religions,judaism,christians,muslims,ect...
But I dont recall the christians sending in death threats or posting the callings for a Jihadd on their websites....lol
Of course Muslims every where think they are all above critisism and redicule,even in the USA...and their threats and screaming has gotten those south park episodes pulled and commedy central will not show any depicted images of mohammed...
This of course this led to Draw mohammed day in which people were encouraged to draw pictures of mohammed,which appeared all over the internet,which also brought threats from muslims and were pulled by sites like myspace,youtube,ect ect..
Of course I did think the one picture showing mohammed going on his honeymoon at a sleezy las vegas hooker hotel with his 8 year old wife in hand(which he historically did have)was a bit much but it was still funny..
by all this it seems that if a religion wants more respect and less ridicule they have to threaten violence and call for holy wars to get it like the muslims...lol
Just a couple of comments and/or opinions. Take them for what they are worth..
First, a believer would not watch, support, and find humor in any mockery like 'South Park'. That is one thing wrong with our post modern culture.
While a Christian would not accept the theology of Mohammed and Islam, that believer should not mock them. That is akin to mocking the Devil and the Bible warns against that. Criticizing the so-called Islamic States that threaten our nation and the rest ofthe free world is another matter.
Allowing Americans to tear down our own country in the name of freedom of religion is another insane idea of the liberal left.

Is it to be considered "dissing" to relate one's own personal experience, if that experience reflects badly on such an institution as the LDS "church"? I'm certain there are Mormons who would rather I not every mention anything at all about their precious con man inspired cult, lest the neccesary process of the suspension of disbelief be interrupted and they begin to question perhaps this unquestioned devotion they might possess. But I shook off my indoctrination, and hey out there, You can too.
As far as violent Islam goes, I see little difference between Islamic Fundimentalist suicide bombers and the Huttaree. It is offensive to both Allah and YHWH (who are essentially the same Divine Evolution of the Ancient God Yah or El, with a few millenia of cultural overlay-)to pervert scripture to achieve violent ends. Both Islam and Christianity both revere Yeshua (Jesus), just in slightly different viewpoints and with different emphasis. Most monotheistic faiths seem to have a built in intolerance for alternate viewpoints anyway.
WAMThunter, I understand your issue with elements of "the left" imposing "political correctness" and a de-emphasization of Protestantism as a dominant cultural influence. Similarly I object to efforts from the religious Right to impose by Law that with which they cannot obtain compliance with on the grounds of love and respect alone. If a young woman is churchgoing and has social connection to a mainstream Protestant church, she will likely be disposed to comply with the edicts and rules of that institution. Why then should force of Law be applied to force compliance? I think too many personal matters have been become foddor for legislation, when nobody was getting hurt in the first place. But then is the Court system being used to avenge the State or modify behavior.
I tend to be a moderate in most matters, with a few outrigger opinions on either side to keep the metaphorical ship from tipping either side. I tend to believe in moderation, and think moderates should be encouraged, a radical belief itself after the polarization of politics in the last couple decades. There has to be a balance in all things, and that usually means compromise and respecting other peoples opinions.
However I also have difficulty with people ignoring some blatent facts so that they can put across their agenda's on the unwilling. For instance some may maintain that that our Nation was founded on a Christian Model, ignoring the Nordic Viking custom that actually gives us the model for our legislative assembly (the Thing) and our very nordic court system of trial by Jury. Jesus didn't get no jury trial, That comes right out of the Heathan past. After all the names of the Days of the week include Woden's Day, Thor's Day and Freya's Day. Not Markday, Lukeday and Johnday. But people with an agenda will ignore any inconvenient facts to further their notions. Does it Diss Christianity If I merely point out that all you devout christians invoke the names of the Ancient Ones, every time you schedule anything? Remember changing the names of the days of the week has been tried! It never took! Is it a "liberal left thing" to advocate for anything other than muscular evangelical fundimentalism? Wouldn't that tend to suggest that a "religious" organization solely focussed on conveying souls to God might have a temporal agenda? Is it such a liberal thing to distrust such a politically motivated "religious" organization, especially considering my unfortunate experiences with that other Right Wing Cult, the Mormons?
I say hands to work, hearts to God, whatever suits you. But too many church socials and the hay don't get baled.

Now, how many of the founding Fathers were Hindu? How many were Islamic? How many were Zoroastrian? How many were Jewish? How many were Christian? I believe the evidence would clearly point to an over-whelming majority (if not 100%) were Christian and our country was founded by Christian with Christian beliefs. Yeah, I know it’s grasping at straws, but it has some substantial weight when viewed in conjunction with everything else. Plus it is well argued thought academia that the underlying theme of the Constitution, as well as the Bill of Rights, is much more Judeo-Christian than any other religion.
While I am thankful to my Anglo decent for giving us those things that have influenced our lives today (such as the days of the week) I am more thankful for My Jewish descended Lord and Savior. I would also like to add that I have several friends that are Lawyers and they say that it is historically documented that trial by jury originated in ancient Greece.
And BTW, Greece is credited with creating Democracy and separation of powers while Rome is credited with the creating the Senate. I believe Iceland is credited with creating the first "Modern" form of Legislation somewhere in the late 1st century, but it is still generally an improved version of what Rome originated. And therefore the U.S. was an improvement upon that.
Rome never made it as far as Iceland. The Icelandic Thingevir dates back to before AD 1000 and the Greeks (who were also pagan) had nothing to do with it. Only Athenians practiced democracy and if we had a really "Biblical" system of government we'd have a King.

I think your religious beliefs are between yourself and your creator. I consider myself a christian but that's between me and Jesus Christ. I will discuss it in an amiable manner. This thread has created quite an issue with me. I can understand that some of you want to discuss Christianity, I prefer fishing and hunting but I see no problem discussing religion. The problem that I have is singling out a religion and attacking someone else’s faith. I am a Christian, I believe in Jesus Christ and believe in the Bible and try to follow it’s teachings. I am a Mormon, and I am not alone. I know of at least 4 members of this group that are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints (the formal name of my church). I have been a member of this forum for quite some time, but because of the multiple attacks against my faith I am getting so frustrated that I wonder it if is worth the benefits. I understand that Bella hates my faith, I can deal with that, but most the “facts” she spews are myths or plain lies. I would like to clear the air on a few points that have been mentioned. HeidelbergJaeger, the best way to learn about a faith is to talk to someone that doesn’t loath that group. Ernest Goes Fishing7, there is no Mormon today that has more than one wife. Has not happened for over 100 years, there are people that still practice polygamy but it is strictly forbidden in the church and they are excommunicated for practicing it (I am 100% NOT interested in the practice anyways). I believe in being respectful to every religion, I feel that every human has the right to decide where to place their faith. I believe that I have given all of you the respect that you deserve and would ask you to respect my faith and the faith of every other person on this site. Please leave the criticism of people’s individual faith that they hold dear out of the discussion. I would specifically ask Bella to not bring up her apparent strong feelings about my faith, you hate me and my family and what I believe in, my faith makes me stronger and makes my family better, I am sorry that you feel that you have been wronged. Freedom to worship as you please in this country is a right. That should not be construded as permission to somehow tear down our American standards by claiming religious freedoms. Live among us, with freedom to practice your non-violent religion, or leave. Giving some of the militant muslim organizations the chance to actually set up training camps to practice their violence under the quise of religious freedoms is very wrong and will become a serious problem in the future.

In the book of Nephi (in the book of Mormon), Nephi is sent back to Jerusalem to obtain a copy of "the holy book" (his older brothers having failed in this task). Nephi finds the High Priest drunk and is instructed to kill the priest with his own sword and steal the "holy book". God supposedly tells Nephi to commit this crime, the excuse being that "it is better for one man to die than a nation perish in disbelief". This is the problem in Mormon "theology". The end is considered to justify the means.
Actually this story only illustrates how ignorant Joseph was about Judaism, he'd obviously never even heard the word "Torah" and the suggestion that a Levite High Priest would even consider parting with the temples Torah is absurd. Then, if the Levite was drunk, then why did he have to be killed? God doesn't usually condone the breaking of His own commandments, why would God do so here? Of course, Dear Babs, you likely never considered this, Mormonism wants you obedient and probably pregnant as well. Questioning the actions of the heros and founders isn't usually done in Mormon Sunday school, one is expected to accept it all without question as "Divinely Inspired". But as the unexamined life is not truly lived, then dogma that cannot stand scrutiny is worthless. God, however you experience Him, is consistent rather than expedient.
So believing in a faith that holds that if God tells you to kill somebody, you should obey without question; Will you kill when "God" tells you? What authority would insure your compliance? If an "Apostle" told you to kill another, would you? How about a member of the "Council of Seventy" or would it take the word of "The Prophet" himself. How would you know that these men aren't schizophrenic? The "Prophet" Brigham ordered the deaths of men, and good Mormons obeyed. The monument at Mountain Meadows stands witness.

Like others have said i believe its bashed on alot cause of other Christians. Were constantly making fun of other types of religions or denominations and i think that has alot to do with it. I believe Jesus lived as a man died on the cross and is coming again someday and is also Gods son. But just cause other people dont believe that doesnt mean i should make fun of them or tear them down. God loves everyone equally and wants us to treat others with respect.

Unfortunately, I don't think liberalism is on its way out. I have friends who are Christians (one of which is a pastor recently out of seminary) who claim to be liberal Christians. They do keep with the family values, yet have been taught to believe that the liberal party is more in line with the teachings of Jesus than the conservatives who they consider hippocrites.
I personally think that the life of an unborn child is much more important that raising a rallying cry for those who are "poor" in this nation. In the U.S. "poor" people still own a car and a couple of color T.V. sets.

my true belief is that christianity is a way of life, not a specific religion. i feel we all need to treat others with the same respect that we would like. that is a true christian.
There is Hinduism,Buddhism,Judaism,Islam and Christianity.In Chritianty there are many churches of differing views that all claim to be the voice of Christianty and in so doing offends other christians.So within Christianity how would you define yourself,are you the one with the big voice or the soft voice?

There is a lot of difference in a true Christian and those who claim to be Christians. Faith is not bound to a particular sect, or denomination, an salvation is not ordained through membership to an organization. Some of the finest examples of true Christianity I know have no affiliation with any Church, as such, and if you asked what kind of Christian they are, would only answer,"One who believes in the Bible."

But anyway The biggest issue is that the majority of christians today do not respect other people in the first place..Respect must be earned not given just because one choses to follow a certin religion...for years and years in this country it was almost unheard of that anyone would out right publicly defy and question the validity of christianity...and or question the self proclaimed authority of the christian church...People are getting smarter and in the last 30 years they are not falling for the myths and fables anymore..and they dont want christians or any other religous people telling them that they have to live their lives according to some set form of religous morality...The basic idea of respect that todays christians is that they want everyone to remain silent and accept their beliefs,they dont want people questioning them and asking for proof of their claims,they dont want people to resist the oppression that christians would and have placed on people in the last 500 years..they want everyone to conform to their views of how life should be lived.....Christianity has been on the decline for decades,as more and more becomes know and people get smarter they begin to drift away from fairtales...just as the Gods of olympus faded into the past when people became smarter and began to question those beliefs and actually realized that there wasnt a bearded old man in the sky throwing lighting bolts down on them....Christianity is headed in the same direction as more and more of its self proclaimed truths are revealed as mear imagination and myths created by primitive minds to account for things they had no knowledge of at the time........and the only reason you feel comfortable with it is because you were taught to be as a child,taught not to question the book of law,taught not to question the church pastor or its elders,this is called indoctrination by the church,,in simple form its brainwashing..

Now, how many of the founding Fathers were Hindu? How many were Islamic? How many were Zoroastrian? How many were Jewish? How many were Christian? I believe the evidence would clearly point to an over-whelming majority (if not 100%) were Christian and our country was founded by Christian with Christian beliefs. Yeah, I know it’s grasping at straws, but it has some substantial weight when viewed in conjunction with everything else. Plus it is well argued thought academia that the underlying theme of the Constitution, as well as the Bill of Rights, is much more Judeo-Christian than any other religion.
While I am thankful to my Anglo decent for giving us those things that have influenced our lives today (such as the days of the week) I am more thankful for My Jewish descended Lord and Savior. I would also like to add that I have several friends that are Lawyers and they say that it is historically documented that trial by jury originated in ancient Greece.
Perhaps it is because Christianity is the religious faith of the majority of Americans. The rule seems to be that the majority is too big to take offense. That does not seem to be the rule in the Middle East. Or anywhere else in the world for that matter.

To deny the spirit in another person is in a way, denying God. I feel the reason why Christianity gets a bum rap, is because there are too many people that are Christians that don't want to make a big deal out of it.
When you see an episode of Family Guy, or Southpark and they show Jesus Christ or God, you could make the case that is HIGHLY offensive. I have seen some South Parks that could be considered extremely offensive to Jesus Christ and Christianity. Did I laugh at the jokes? Yes. But I also feel that Jesus Christ and God have a sense of humor.
Do any of these shows do that to Mohammad? Not one of them to my knowledge. Probably because when they make fun of the Lord, they may receive some complaints, but they don't receive letters saying they are going to get blown up or that their infidel comedy will be destroyed.

First, a believer would not watch, support, and find humor in any mockery like 'South Park'. That is one thing wrong with our post modern culture.

I believe Iceland is credited with creating the first "Modern" form of Legislation somewhere in the late 1st century, but it is still generally an improved version of what Rome originated. I decided long ago that I would not be a religious person by any means. I consider myself spiritual. Religion is a man made topic, and it has done good and bad for societies through out history.
I am a Christian, and I believe in the Holy Trinity. I don't use the Bible to gay bash, and I do not use it for anything in political debates. I don't believe that God, or Jesus Christ was much of a politician. They were more like teachers and only offered guidance in how to live your life. I feel that mankind has perverted their ideas and also their teachings.
And the same can be said about most other religions as far as Hindus and also Muslims. We see this in the fact that many islamic extremists use the Koran to explain why they feel they need to take innocent life, and also why they hate infidel Americans.
We see how Hinduism can be perverted into the belief of reincarnation and also a Caste System that keeps people from becoming more then what they can actually become. I am a firm believer in the human spirit, and how it can do amazing things, even if you are a dirt farmer in the middle of BFE.
We see it in Christianity when men of the clothe steal money from people only wanting to donate to a righteous cause, or from a group like that Baptist organization that holds rallies at dead soldier and Marine funerals.
Do these people show a majority in their groups? Of course not. I live my life to try and be a good person and show respect to all people, no matter their color, religion, or creed. Is that being a good Christian? I think so. Is that being a good American? I think so.
Religion in my opinion should be a private matter. What I believe, may not be what you believe, but does that change anything on how I should treat you, or you to me? Nope.

Does Christianity get a bum rap? Yes.
Why? Because it is the largest religion making it the biggest and easiest associated target. This is of course considering you group all denominations. Most all religions have sub-sects such as the Sunni and Shiite Muslims (just to name a couple which we have heard so much about as of late) or the Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana of Buddhism. Plus every group has it’s own numb-nuts (like the Kansas church that protested the funeral) who have screwed it up and pushed people away.
As a Christian it disgusts me to see the so-called church from Kansas do what they do. It is over-the-top, in-your-face, crude, and wrong when they hold up signs that read “God hates Gays” (as well as the other stuff they do). But it is just as over-the-top, in-your-face, crude and wrong to hold a “Gay Pride” parade that flaunts hedonistic men in leather thongs and bondage equipment in the town square for my children and I to see. Like I said, EVERY groups has it’s own A-holes that do the wrong things.

This thread has created quite an issue with me. I can understand that some of you want to discuss Christianity, I prefer fishing and hunting but I see no problem discussing religion. The problem that I have is singling out a religion and attacking someone else’s faith. I am a Christian, I believe in Jesus Christ and believe in the Bible and try to follow it’s teachings. I am a Mormon, and I am not alone. I know of at least 4 members of this group that are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints (the formal name of my church). I have been a member of this forum for quite some time, but because of the multiple attacks against my faith I am getting so frustrated that I wonder it if is worth the benefits. I understand that Bella hates my faith, I can deal with that, but most the “facts” she spews are myths or plain lies. I would like to clear the air on a few points that have been mentioned. HeidelbergJaeger, the best way to learn about a faith is to talk to someone that doesn’t loath that group. Ernest Goes Fishing7, there is no Mormon today that has more than one wife. Has not happened for over 100 years, there are people that still practice polygamy but it is strictly forbidden in the church and they are excommunicated for practicing it (I am 100% NOT interested in the practice anyways). I believe in being respectful to every religion, I feel that every human has the right to decide where to place their faith. I believe that I have given all of you the respect that you deserve and would ask you to respect my faith and the faith of every other person on this site. Please leave the criticism of people’s individual faith that they hold dear out of the discussion. I would specifically ask Bella to not bring up her apparent strong feelings about my faith, you hate me and my family and what I believe in, my faith makes me stronger and makes my family better, I am sorry that you feel that you have been wronged. The social issues that "fundamentalists" go on about (whether they are Christian, Muslim, or Jew) are primarily based on sources other than the direct words of Yeshua. Proscriptions on Abortion (or for that matter, prostitution) are Old Testament based or are cited from the writings of mysogynistic men, like Saul/Paul or others, Yeshua's own words cover a wide range of subjects, but not abortion. He told the prostitute to "Go and sin no more". He said nothing about homosexuality at all, although when asked about eunichs He said (Mathew 9:11+12) "There are some who are made Eunichs by man and some who were made eunichs by Nature. Then there are those who make themselves eunichs for the love of God, he that will, let him."
I object to persons claiming their prejudices against women and gays are supported by the words and teachings of Yeshua, when the Great Rabbi says not one word to suggest such prejudices.
Yes such proscriptions are in Leviticus, which is in the Old Testament as commandments to the "children of Israel", but moderns who claim such rules apply to people not of semitic descent forget that there is a whole compendium of law they are ignoring there, just so they can pick and choose the rules they want, this includes the proscription on wearing mixed fibers, eating pork, shellfish or most seafood, as well as the requirement that Widows have to marry their brother-in-laws. As I have posted I have known and loved some wonderful people who were christians, although I am inclinded to think they would have been every bit as nice had they been Bahai or Parsee (and I do know some very nice Bahai folks and some decent Parsees too).
Yeshua taught people to "love one another" and "turn the other cheek" and to "judge not lest ye be judged" but the strident social critics who call themselves "fundamentalists" seem to forget what Yeshua said. They would rather go out and smite people rather than turn the cheek. I understand the desire to smite what you don't like, but you can't call it "Christianity" unless you are driving the bankers out of the temple, like Yeshua did. I could respect that.
But as I have written before, I am descended of the peoples of the North, not the Levant. Levitical rules are not directed at me, my ancestors had their own rule and laws, which form our system of jurisprudence today. Do you think Yeshua got a jury trial? Hela no! that is a Norse tradition, like democracy itself! My faith prizes Honor and Truth, Courage and Steadfastness. Whenever I find manipulative people who seek to dominate other weaker folk for personal gain I am filled with rightious umbrage. When I see double standards imposed for the benefit of the few I am angered. When I hear of supposed "christians" like Glenn Beck claiming social justice is a code for naziism I get outraged. I try to be honest in all my dealings, because an honest person can see through lies. As I have said, I do try to know what the Divine Will wants me to do and how to act, for myself and my own personal relationship with the Divine. I don't need a book written by anybody else centuries ago to do this, nor do I feel I should need to obey special rules put on persons in another society centuries ago either. If you wanna do so, go ahead (you might even be Jewish like Moishe), But no, your ancestors weren't the boss of mine, so you can't put their laws on me and not have me object strenuously. I LIKE bacon cheeseburgers and oysters too!
Oh and friends, I would never impose my faith on you, by force or fiat or otherwise. You couldn't pay the price I have paid for my faith, you'd run away in tears... Be glad that your God hasn't required of you what my Gods have asked of me, I paid an unimaginable price for my sacred vision. But you get what you pay for and having been through what I've been through, My faith is a rock, the visions I have been given are clear in my mind.
But even though I have been given sacred visions of the Divine, I would not ever sully that by imposing it on others, nor do I seek devotees or disciples. No tv show will ever shill for money in my name, and I will not lobby politicians to get policy changed to suit my worldview.
If you want a vision for yourself, go see a Medicine person and go on vision quest, do what you got to to get your own vision. When you have walked the vision path, and suffered enough, then the vision you will be granted will be your own personal vision.

Is it to be considered "dissing" to relate one's own personal experience, if that experience reflects badly on such an institution as the LDS "church"? I'm certain there are Mormons who would rather I not every mention anything at all about their precious con man inspired cult, lest the neccesary process of the suspension of disbelief be interrupted and they begin to question perhaps this unquestioned devotion they might possess. But I shook off my indoctrination, and hey out there, You can too.
As far as violent Islam goes, I see little difference between Islamic Fundimentalist suicide bombers and the Huttaree. It is offensive to both Allah and YHWH (who are essentially the same Divine Evolution of the Ancient God Yah or El, with a few millenia of cultural overlay-)to pervert scripture to achieve violent ends. Both Islam and Christianity both revere Yeshua (Jesus), just in slightly different viewpoints and with different emphasis. Most monotheistic faiths seem to have a built in intolerance for alternate viewpoints anyway.
WAMThunter, I understand your issue with elements of "the left" imposing "political correctness" and a de-emphasization of Protestantism as a dominant cultural influence. Similarly I object to efforts from the religious Right to impose by Law that with which they cannot obtain compliance with on the grounds of love and respect alone. If a young woman is churchgoing and has social connection to a mainstream Protestant church, she will likely be disposed to comply with the edicts and rules of that institution. Why then should force of Law be applied to force compliance? I think too many personal matters have been become foddor for legislation, when nobody was getting hurt in the first place. But then is the Court system being used to avenge the State or modify behavior.
I tend to be a moderate in most matters, with a few outrigger opinions on either side to keep the metaphorical ship from tipping either side. I tend to believe in moderation, and think moderates should be encouraged, a radical belief itself after the polarization of politics in the last couple decades. There has to be a balance in all things, and that usually means compromise and respecting other peoples opinions.
However I also have difficulty with people ignoring some blatent facts so that they can put across their agenda's on the unwilling. For instance some may maintain that that our Nation was founded on a Christian Model, ignoring the Nordic Viking custom that actually gives us the model for our legislative assembly (the Thing) and our very nordic court system of trial by Jury. Jesus didn't get no jury trial, That comes right out of the Heathan past. After all the names of the Days of the week include Woden's Day, Thor's Day and Freya's Day. Wouldn't that tend to suggest that a "religious" organization solely focussed on conveying souls to God might have a temporal agenda? Is it such a liberal thing to distrust such a politically motivated "religious" organization, especially considering my unfortunate experiences with that other Right Wing Cult, the Mormons?

I think your religious beliefs are between yourself and your creator. I consider myself a christian but that's between me and Jesus Christ. I will discuss it in an amiable manner. My beliefs tell me not to judge so I try not to. Other religions fascinate me. Alot of them seem to gravitate to a supreme being.? I will not look down on other religions because of my beliefs. Some of them are fascinating. Whether you want to admit it or not Christians are a minority on this planet. Bottom line We will face St.Peter at the pearly gates then Jesus, Then our ultimate creator! Other than leaving our living loved ones,how exciting is that!?

You can blithely give me "minuses" or you can respond rationally. However having been raised on the Blarney Mormons are expected to believe, I frequently doubt the capacity for rational analysis from cultists. The suspension of disbelief required is just too much for most, after all that repeated indoctrination.
I however believe humans should think for themselves, investigating and testing the premises brought before them for veracity and ethics. Mormonism fails at all counts. The Mormon Cult should have been crushed after the Mountain Meadows Massacre, not to mention the abortive conflict called "Johnson's War". Read the History and things like why a cap and ball revolver with a cut off barrel is called a "Mormon Avenger" become crystal clear. Is there a weapon called a "Catholic Avenger"? How about a "Lutheran Retribution"? A "Mennonite Mangler"? An "Episcopalian Extinguisher"? Nope, Nothing like such exist, only Mormonism ever felt the need to supplement their Christianity with concealed extreme close-range bellyguns. And why would that be? And why WOULD that be....?
In the book of Nephi (in the book of Mormon), Nephi is sent back to Jerusalem to obtain a copy of "the holy book" (his older brothers having failed in this task). Nephi finds the High Priest drunk and is instructed to kill the priest with his own sword and steal the "holy book". God supposedly tells Nephi to commit this crime, the excuse being that "it is better for one man to die than a nation perish in disbelief". This is the problem in Mormon "theology". The end is considered to justify the means.
Actually this story only illustrates how ignorant Joseph was about Judaism, he'd obviously never even heard the word "Torah" and the suggestion that a Levite High Priest would even consider parting with the temples Torah is absurd. Then, if the Levite was drunk, then why did he have to be killed? God doesn't usually condone the breaking of His own commandments, why would God do so here? Of course, Dear Babs, you likely never considered this, Mormonism wants you obedient and probably pregnant as well. Questioning the actions of the heros and founders isn't usually done in Mormon Sunday school, one is expected to accept it all without question as "Divinely Inspired". But as the unexamined life is not truly lived, then dogma that cannot stand scrutiny is worthless. God, however you experience Him, is consistent rather than expedient.
So believing in a faith that holds that if God tells you to kill somebody, you should obey without question; Will you kill when "God" tells you? What authority would insure your compliance? If an "Apostle" told you to kill another, would you? How about a member of the "Council of Seventy" or would it take the word of "The Prophet" himself. How would you know that these men aren't schizophrenic? The "Prophet" Brigham ordered the deaths of men, and good Mormons obeyed. The monument at Mountain Meadows stands witness.

There are eight known and recorded "paths" or methods for accessing the divine. One is through psychoactive substances, but I don't recommend that way (too many go insane when they encounter God unprepared), it may be cheap but it costs too much. There is ascetic practice, but that takes time and discipline (as well as the willingness to wear rags and eat nothing), there is the disciples path, but the pitfall there is what if your spiritual master is a fake? Then again submitting to a spiritual master means you trade your freedom for enlightenment. There is the ordeal path, which is of course very very painful (but very popular none the less, but will you still see God when the pain stops). then there is music, and dance, both of which can open the mind to God (but how do you get to Carnagie Hall- practice, practice). Then there is the Shamans path, but the spirits have to choose you, you don't get to choose it (but most spirit touched people want nothing to do with it, if they'd had their druthers). After that sensory deprivation is also a choice, but the problem is the same as with drugs (too many come out of the tank catatonic or just bonkers). Then there is simply dying and being sent back (awful risky, how you know they gonna send you back?) No path to the Divine is without risk or without a price, but you get what you pay for. Which path did I take? I ain't telling. There are many paths and they are all well trodden. Pick one that suits what you are willing to pay and again, you get what you pay for.
Many folks can go through life just fine without needing to confront the Divine, the happy warm fuzzies of dopamine release in church, mosque or synagogue work just fine for them. Others however need more and should go seek it, just never delude yourself that it is easy. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy.

Oh and I bodged the biblical reference a few posts ago, excuse me, that was Matthew 19, verses 11 + 12, not Matthew 9, which is a different scripture all together. I try to get things right, but I am still mortal.

Freedom to worship as you please in this country is a right. That should not be construded as permission to somehow tear down our American standards by claiming religious freedoms. Live among us, with freedom to practice your non-violent religion, or leave. Giving some of the militant muslim organizations the chance to actually set up training camps to practice their violence under the quise of religious freedoms is very wrong and will become a serious problem in the future.

Like others have said i believe its bashed on alot cause of other Christians. Were constantly making fun of other types of religions or denominations and i think that has alot to do with it. I believe Jesus lived as a man died on the cross and is coming again someday and is also Gods son. But just cause other people dont believe that doesnt mean i should make fun of them or tear them down. God loves everyone equally and wants us to treat others with respect.

STRANDED ON A DESERT ISLAND
There was a man who was stranded on a desert island for many, many years. One day, while strolling along the beach, he spotted a ship in the distance. This had never happened in all the time he was on the island, so he was very excited about the chance of being rescued.
Immediately, he built a fire on the beach and generated as much smoke as possible. It worked! Soon, the ship was heading his way. When the ship was close enough to the island, a dinghy was dispatched to investigate the situation. He pointed the men in the direction of his home. They looked up and saw three buildings. They inquired about the building next to the man's house and he proudly replied, "That's my church - I go there to worship on Sundays."
When asked about the third building, the man looked down, shuffled his feet, and quietly said, "That's where I used to go to church."

Why doesn't this seem like playing both ends against the middle to you?

If you want to see your organization lauded as a church and not cursed as a cult, purge it! Don't know how you are looking at it, but the left has represented the criminal element as being victimized by the uncompassionate left. Hillary even wanted felons to be able to vote while incarcerated knowing they would vote liberal. The left represents the Gay lifestyle. I've spent a lot of cyberspace debating liberals that want to contest the notion of morals, and values, as "who's values? The Christian Rights values? Any low life in our society is always welcomed under the liberal BIG TENT, and they will be described as being victimized.

Unfortunately, I don't think liberalism is on its way out. I have friends who are Christians (one of which is a pastor recently out of seminary) who claim to be liberal Christians. They do keep with the family values, yet have been taught to believe that the liberal party is more in line with the teachings of Jesus than the conservatives who they consider hippocrites.
I personally think that the life of an unborn child is much more important that raising a rallying cry for those who are "poor" in this nation. In the U.S. "poor" people still own a car and a couple of color T.V. sets.
Christianity gets no respect from the left. The left works very, very hard at destroying our basic, moral values. The more they destroy our values the more questionable behavior is accepted, and the more diverse the leftist base becomes. Christianity represents the moral values that the left attacks.
When Christians show that they actually understand and follow the teachings of Jesus, I respect that quite a bit, although I am not and have no desire to be christian myself, as I have my own faith. But self-rightious hateful people who use the Bible to excuse their petty prejudices and impose their double standards on others will never get any respect from me, none, NADA. That isn't what the Great Rabbi taught at all. Most of the so-called "christians " I encounter these days believe nothing like the Christ teaches in the Beatitudes, and would rather judge their neighbors than love them. How can anybody respect that. Then there is the fact that I have no respect for those who don't respect me, tit for tat. I know of quite a few self centered pseudochristians who think they are God's Gift to the World and I always chuckle with glee whenever such are humbled.
