What's It Worth?

giving -1's with out a reason

Uploaded on February 21, 2010

just for what its worth...

if you give someone a -1...then you should explain why and for your reasoning..

I care less about points so I will take hits all day long, but just to disagree with no reason, and you did not like what they wrote..with no explanation of why you disagree.. I don't know..seems.. well, weak.

Idiotic posts deserve plus's or minus's as an indicator of whether they are good or bad. I usually refrain from giving minus 1's except to the really bad ones. Just takes the page longer to reload and not worth my time. I agree with what you are saying.

Some responses are so arcane that no explanation is required. I have never given minuses solely because I did not agree with someone's opinion.

The times I will give a -1 are if:

a)the poster of said remark is exhibiting extreme dumbazz behavior
b)the post was beyond stupid and completely missed the point of the question
c)the post had some sort of plug for a commercial website or business - my philosophy is BUY AN AD or leave it off. This reduces your credibility.
d)the poster advocates something illegal or immoral

There have been lots of posts I strongly disagreed with, but did NOT dock them because I want to see discourse. Good honest debate with give & take is good. There have even been times where somebody put something down and they already had red ink - and I +1'd them on the principle that they were standing tough for what they believed - even when it was something I was not 100% with.

There are certain "third rails" that will earn you a -1 for just posting a comment. Some that come to mind are; disagreeing with one of F&S's writers on the Blogs, handguns for personal defense, suggesting that baiting isn't really hunting, dislike of Obama. The -1's will be a drive-by. Just another reason to not give a hoot about points.

When I get a -1 I take a careful look at my post. Almost always it has been for some point of view differences not offensive content, etc. It doesn't bother me when that happens but it sure sends a message about the maturity of person(s) who do that sort of thing. A very few times I have noted that my post was probably not as appropriate as it could have been. But never anything sexist, racist, or abusive. That's not me. Anyway, I do look at the minuses and pluses, mostly to judge my own behavior. Unlike some individuals (who will remain nameless, but probably shouldn't), what others think of me means a lot.

I too do not want to see/read anything that would be illegal/unsafe or un educated (rascist..etc..)

I do like what your saying as use of your own judge of behaviors.

As with the lines of "maturity" I wonder if "fake names" have logged on to create havioc? And as that info from the question side, i.e. online editors posting... and with the WAM saying adios' I wonder will this be the nail in the coffin for many others...points, no points, I enjoy the time I get online, but it too is wearing on me... but as you know with history, it does repeat itself.

I like spartan88's other site that has the theme with it. We should have either a "hit" or a "miss" button instead of "Yes" or "No". Also, if you see how many of each are given, then you can see if a lot of people agree with you and disagree with you or if only one or two people have any opinion at all. I could see that as more helpful.

Matt, the "..." is an elipse. Typically, an elipse is used when quoting someone. It means the writer is leaving something out that was in the original quote. An elipse can also be used to effect a pause in a dialogue.

There are a couple of guys on this site that I'm sure are fine fellows, but by their own estimation are superior in intellect to the rest of us and some of us find their posts just a little dismissive and condescending. Therefore, they draw their fair share of -1's. There are a few whose politics are in opposition to their, and our, preferred recreational activities, yet they seem compelled to express those conflicting points of view as is their right. It should then come as no surprise that those views that are in opposition to our outdoor lifestyle get hit with -1's. Everyone has the freedom of speech regardless of the popularity of the topic. And -1's are in themselves a form of protected speech, just as is a cat-call or boo and hiss during an unpopular address.

Sourdough, look at your own post. That seems dismissive, condescending and condemming. You may or may not be pointing your pen at me, but you write as if there is an 'us vs them' dynamic operating here at the F&S site. What politics are in opposition to our preferred recreational activities? You've gone from stating earlier on this thread that you "don't give a hoot about points" to now implying that you use '-1s' as a way to boo or hiss opinions you disagree with. So, I guess '-1s' and trying to limit points is a way to punish unpopular opinions. I am surprised that you are now making that argument. The majority of the opinions on this thread seemed to support your previous stand, that '-1s' are better used to point out off the wall and dumbazz remarks and behaviors (thanks squaredneck), rather than slapping at opinions you disagree with.

O.H.- the only -1 I know of that I have received is because I thought something was not done ethically. So I feel that was a bogus reason. However, I have also received +1 for saying nothing of value. In the end it all cancels out and I could care less about my points. Just because I have x#of stars does not mean I know anything or am more helpful than the next person.

Don't sweat it. There are some childish characters on here that do it just to irritate you or get a rise out of you.

WA Mtnhunter-
Superior firepower or liberal application of HE? What's the difference? 105's, 155's, 81's, 4.2's, etc.....

Carney, you crack me up! LOL

I suppose if you didn't think yours was a good post in the first place, you wouldn't have posted it. Given that, a plus 1 is in order!

As in any theater of public discourse the audience will express their emotional response to that which plays out before them. Consider a +1 as clapping and a -1 as a boo and hiss. And yes, I will play my role without regard for points because as stated above I just don't give a hoot about points. Opinions, we all have them, some are popular around the campfire and others aren't.

no report is good, when I first joined I got outraged at the swearing and extreme offensive remarks... the site needs some work, but that is neither here nor there.. I see your points WAM, I do, really.. I guess I want more people to validate their reasoning, ya know? have a great day EVERYbody.

ohh
I see your points.

The 'adios' I implied was "Adios MF" to the bickering and BS from our WAR hero! If I unass the blog it will certainly not be announced! Ha Ha!

True confessions:

I always plus one my own post.

Sometimes I mean to "minus one" a post, but I am so used to "plus one-ing" that I hit the "yes" button instead of the "no" button. I question the significance of my life in those moments...

I don't have a problem with -1's as long as somebody has a reason, however bogus that reason may be. But I don't understand thumbs down on pictures. I have a handful of pictures with thumbs down I don't know why. If you say it is a 30" fish and it is 15" I can somewhat understand but blanket the thumbs down is retarded.

I don't have a problem with people giving out -1's without an explanation - usually it's not too difficult to figure out why.

There have been occasions, however, where I've seen posts, or photos, that have been given -1's and it's not obvious why - in those situations I think it does make sense to include a comment that explains your thinking.
