Quick Tips

Giving yourself +1's, should this be possible?

Uploaded on July 15, 2009

I noticed the other day that a few certain users always had +1's to their comments even if they were very plain answers or even poor answers while the good answers to questions didn't have any marks. After checking into it, I found that I can actually give my own answers a positive, and receive points for that (which is probably why these folks are doing this). I guess this is just another case of a few users being point greedy. What are your thoughts on this, should F&S even allow this?

I was curious one day and clicked on a post that I had made and it added a +1 after my post. Hmmm, why would you be allowed to give yourself a point?
I don't understand the point thing but if someone is rewarded someway for having a certain amount of points, I think it should be rewarded honestly. Cheaters never prosper...remember your mother telling you that??
If you can't play fair, don't play.

So what? What is the point in cheating at something that doesn't have any value anyway? If someone just has to have a +1 on their little comment, probably only Sigmund Freud could explain it via some penile deficiency or other infantile insecurity.

Grow up folks!

Not sure why people are concerned. In all honesty the points dont mean anything at the end of the day. All these people who want gear and are just trying to post a bunch of worthless crap will never get selected anyways, so its irralavent what there point total is anyways. I think if you have been around the site long enough everyone knows whos answers and comments are good and who is just posting to post. I will give myself a -1 to prove my point. It does not matter about points and not sure why people get so wrapped up in themm

I also have noticed a rash of +1s recently. I doubt it is people doing it to themselves. I imagine the editors can see who is actually awarding points.

I no longer -1 without explaining why. A -1 is not because I just disagree. Actually, if I disagree but it is still a good answer I might still +1. I have +1 where someone gave a good answer but was obviously knocked down by someone else who just disagreed. Seems that others have done the same.

I am a little confussed here. When I first got on this site I thought "how cool, earn points and try gear" but now I go on the site to get ideas for fishing, learn things for hunting and so on. But all I have been seeing is a lot of complaining about points. . . points no one cares about. If F&S is cool with it, I am for sure OK with setting it so you can't give yourself points. It wouldn't matter to me anyway. Points are not the end-all be-all here for me. I like to hear what other folks say. I learn a lot.

I will admit to being pretty free with giving +1's to folks if I think it moves conversation forward or someone has a good point. I try to save the -1's for someone who is screwing up real bad like any of the PETA clowns (who don't care) or recently this anusbuster character. I'd rather not give a -1 unless there's something really wrong going on. If we didn't have differing opinions on things we'd all be just repeating each other. Not fun.

sgaredneck, txs for your reply.. it appears to me based on looking at a lot of questions and answers that some of the guys, and this is not a site to call out names, ask very simple questions, yet give excellent in depth answers, and always, always have +1 points to everything. some questions are also repeated. so therefore what you have here is, just like some hunters, horn hunters. F&S should not have to control cheaters.
these guys are just like poachers, "if the DNR catches us, we'll stop". a cheat is a cheat caught or not. it's not about points , to me it's about looking over a lot of junk from the same 3-4 folks to find folks with real answers or questions.

Back on the topic of this thread. As far as points go, they are sort of irrelevant. I haven't seen where you win a prize for having the most posts, or anything like that. If the most posts wins, there are folks with 3 or 4 times what I have. I couldn't catch them if I wanted to. And it doesn't matter. Like I said before, I'm here to learn, here to discuss stuff, exchange ideas, and talk with like-minded people about the outdoors. That's the real prizes.
