Gun Wisdom

Uploaded on March 03, 2010

Clint Smith, Director of Thunder Ranch, is part Drill Instructor and part stand up comic.

Here are a few of his observations on tactics, firearms,
self defense and life as we know it in the Civilized world.

"The handgun would not be my choice of weapon if I knew I was going to a fight....I'd choose a rifle, a shotgun, an RPG or an atomic Bomb instead."

"The two most important rules in a gunfight are: Always cheat and Always win."

"Every time I teach a class, I discover I don't know something."

"Don't forget, incoming fire has the right of way."

"Make your attacker advance through a wall of bullets.. I may get killed with my own gun, but he's gonna have to beat me to death with it, cause it's going to be empty."

"If you're not shootin', you should be loadin'. If you're not loadin, you should be movin', if you're not movin', someone's gonna cut your head off and put it on a stick.."

"When you reload in low light encounters, don't put your flashlight in your back pocket... If you light yourself up, you'll look like an angel or the tooth fairy...and you're gonna be one of 'em pretty soon."

"Do something. It may be wrong, but do something."

"Nothing adds a little class to a sniper course like a babe in a Ghilliesuit."

"Shoot what's available, as long as it's available, until something else becomes available."

"If you carry a gun, people will call you paranoid. That's ridiculous. If I have a gun, what in the hell do I have to be paranoid about."

"Don't shoot fast, shoot good."

"You can say 'stop' or 'alto' or use any other word you think will work but I've found that a large bore muzzle pointed at someone's head is pretty much the universal language."

"You have the rest of your life to solve your problems. How long you live depends on how well you do it."

"You cannot save the planet. You may be able to save yourself and your family."

"Thunder Ranch will be here as long as you'll have us or until someone makes us go away and either way it will be exciting."

More Excellent Gun Wisdom........

The purpose of fighting is to Win!

There is no possible victory in defense. The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either.

The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.

1. Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he'll just kill you.

2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

3. I carry a gun cause a cop is too heavy.

4. When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.

5. A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him 'Why do you carry a 45?' The Ranger responded, 'Because they don't make
a 46.'

6. An armed man will kill an unarmed man with monotonous regularity.

7. The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm 'Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?' 'No ma'am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my rifle.'

8. Beware the man who only has one gun. He probably knows how to use it!

'The true Soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' -G. K. Chesterton

A people that values its privileges above its principles will soon lose both.

'Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not.' ~
Thomas Jefferson

"A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy." --Samuel
Adams

The last quote is absolutely correct, look at the apathy that the general American public has fallen into. Very few people have principles that they live by and even less have any manners at all.

That's an interesting read. The quote from Jefferson doesn't sound quite right, so I did a brief search and found it likely is a bogus quote, if attributed to the red haired scribe and patriot.

Scholars at the Thomas Jefferson Encyclopedia made the following report:
Status: We have not found any evidence that Thomas Jefferson said or wrote, "Those who hammer their guns into plows will plow for those who do not."

Another researcher, David Emory, wrote: The earliest variant of the quote I've been able to find does indeed use the word "swords" -- but by "earliest" I mean 1984. I'm still searching, of course, but so far I haven't been able to find ANY references before that date.

Earliest Internet (newsgroup) mentions so far:

"Those who hammer their swords into plowshares, will soon be plowing for those with swords." (Unattributed, December 11, 1994)

"Those who hammer their swords into plowshares ultimately end up tilling the soil as slaves to those who do not." (Unattributed, September 5, 1998)

Earliest newspaper mentions so far:

"...we like to think that those who beat their swords into plowshares will wind up doing the plowing for those who still have swords." (Attributed to self-avowed "soldier of fortune" in The Sacramento Bee, September 23, 1984)

"Those who beat their guns into plows will plow for those who don't." (Slogan on a bumper sticker found on the pickup truck of Francisco Martin Duran, the man who opened fire on the White House with a semiautomatic rifle on October 29, 1994 -- Washington Post and other sources, October 30, 1994)

Earliest book references I have found so far (via Google book search and A9.com book search):

Nothing whatsoever before 2000. Post-2000, a smattering of citations referencing versions of the unattributed quote as bumper sticker slogans.

A Democracy: Three wolves and a sheep voting on dinner.

A Republic: The flock gets to vote for which wolves vote on dinner.

A Constitutional Republic: Voting on dinner is expressly forbidden, and the sheep are armed.

Federal Government: The means by which the sheep will be fooled into voting for a Democracy.

Freedom: Two very hungry wolves looking for dinner and finding a very well-informed and well-armed sheep.

This definitely is not a Franklin quote, and the attribution of the quote credited to BF is debatable.

Kenton-
What point, if any, did you try to make in plagiarizing David Petzal's post of 22 Feb 2010? I await your reply and explanation.

If you're going to cut-and-paste between web sites, at least make sure it's at least two different ones...

I was going to illustrate, but just saw crm3006 remember.

crm3006,

1. I don't sit here all day waiting to read comments to something I posted.

2. I had no knowledge of Petzals post prior to you mentioning it.

3. I had the info sent to me by a friend and thought it had some interesting info that I'd share with others.

4. Who made you the websight monitor? Geeeeeeeeeeeez...

Kenton-
Nobody made me a website monitor, but I will call bull-snot on you or anybody else anytime I feel it necessary. To me, and others, your post was an obvious plagiarism of Petzal's earlier post of the same material. As to website monitoring, I notice you jump right in the middle of that little RylieGipson girl anytime you get the chance, so, if you don't like the shoe being on the other foot, take more care in what you cut and paste. I personaly believe there is more value in a literate, well thought out question or statement than cut and paste, anyway. Again on website monitoring, any responsible user should be a website monitor, and take action as appropriate, as you, your- self have done in the past.

Well my opinion is you're full of it. After your tantrum I looked up Petzal's post and we both got it from the internet. Plagiarism? My god... Apparently Petzal is guilty of the same crimes of plagiarism and cut and paste in you're eyes since he redistributed it? Neither Petzal or I took credit for the content, we both put it on the sight for everyone to enjoy....

Get off it!

I had a poster that I gave to my officers and just about all of them had it on the wall of their office. It was a quote from Wyatt Earp-- "Be slow and deliberant as fast as you can." and my boss said the first rule of a gunfight was " to bring a gun"
