2nd Amendment
PHOENIX – About a dozen people carrying guns, including one with a military-style rifle, milled among protesters outside the convention center where President Barack Obama was giving a speech Monday — the latest incident in which protesters have openly displayed firearms near the president.
Gun-rights advocates say they're exercising their constitutional right to bear arms and protest, while those who argue for more gun control say it could be a disaster waiting to happen.

first off, lets get our verbiage right. It was an AR-15 which means it was semi-auto which means it was NOT an Assault Weapon.
The key words in that article are "military style rifle" notice the big difference between that and "military rifle"
The only thing that makes that gun any more dangerous than a semi-auto hunting rifle is how scary it looks to city slickers.
In the past, a few Presidents tried to restrict the 2nd Amendment. My suggestion to President Obama is, support the 2nd Amendment and the problem will go away, and it’s that simple! The Democratic Party is picking a fight with a Nation like no other. America will not go down with just a whimper like Australia did. There are those will die to protect this right so the question is to the Democrats, “IS IT WORTH IT!”
As for the people supporting there 2nd Amendment, I support their cause, I just hope there the ones with the cool heads!
“The broad principle that there is an individual right to bear arms is shared by many Americans, including myself. I'm of the view that you can't take a broad approach to other rights, such as First Amendment rights, and then interpret the Second Amendment so narrowly that it could fit in a thimble.”
-Senator Charles Schumer, D-NY, 2002-May-8
as for what I think about this whole "bringing guns to political rallies" fad:
I applaud people exercising their 2nd amendment right... Wisely.
I'm just not so sure this falls under the category of "wisely", especially that guy in NH with the sign calling for the blood of tyrants.
I think there is a valid argument to be made that open carrying at one of these town-hall type settings is not exactly conducive to free speech.
Of course tjos isn't true for patriotic manly-men such as ourselves, but I can see how a significant portion of the population could be discouraged from speaking their mind if there was someone standing in front of them with an AR-15 in a tactical sling telling them they are wrong.
The "escalation" argument could probably also be made. It starts out with people yelling, then people pushing and shoving, then the union thugs beat the guy up in Florida, then one guy brings a handgun, then a dozen guys bring handguns and one guy brings an AR... you can see where this is heading.
The escalation trend is pretty clear.
I'd say the cause would be better served by de-escalating the tension, and ratcheting up the debate... but what do I know?
One more thing,
Assault Rifles are against the law by all States to legally hunt with!
GET IT RIGHT!
To clarify:
I'm not saying the government should stop them from doing what they're doing so far, but I am saying that they should exercise some better judgment and just choose not to do it themselves.
If I could understand the net gain from displaying the gun I'd say go ahead but I simply don't see the up side. Can anyone explain to me what we hope to accomplish with this move? To me this just shows bad judgment and disrespect for the highest office in the land. Don't misunderstand, I can't stand Obama, but he is an elected official and the way to deal with elected officials that you don't care for is with the vote. Wearing the gun, even though legal, gives the far left the benefit not us.
I am also trying to figure out how this will play out in the long run and how it might affect gun owners . . . or perhaps just fade away and become nothing more than a political trivia question . . . at first blush, I thought it would only strengthen the anti-gun movement because it would energize those opposed to guns and perhaps help them in their efforts to get anti-gun legislation passed (as least in those states where it has some chance of passing) but as time goes on, I am beginning to think that if we're lucky it could possibly help gun owners by highlighting the hystrical nature of many of the anti-gun advocates - of course this assumes that nothing goes terribly wrong with someone who brings a gun to one of these rallies . . . my crystal ball is in the shop right now, so I am still waiting to see how it all plays out . . . but however it turns out, I don't think this is the smartest way to advance the rights of gun owners
I may carry to one IF I expect thugs to be there but no one will know I am packing.
It seems, since I first posted this article and link, more and more people are openingly carrying, and using their carry and concealed weapons permit.
Only time will tell how this all plays out in the media!
Thanks guys for your take on this subject.

My question is: Is it yet the appropriate time to openly display? Is it drawing unnecesary attention? Is it sending the right message?
Personally, the 2nd amendment is not a show and tell issue. It stands by its own power and creed, it does not need advertised or showcased. I will not open carry or display until it is a necesary function of survival. And you can bet that at that point, it will not be for the sole purpose of a political statement.

Great questions and well said!
I agree, but I did hear one protester encourage other people,to use your 2nd Ammendment right ...use it or lose it,don't take it for granted!
Well since I have a CCL I cannot carry openly ( A handgun anyway ) and see no need to carry a rifle to a political meeting. That is asking for trouble in the paranoia exhibited by politicians, the media, Secret Service and "local yokels" (rent a cops) etc, I carry daily but no one knows it.
2Poppa- use it or lose it idea does make some sense, I will agree with that as well... but like Teddy said, speak softly and carry a big stick!
Take care~JB
Just a thought but, Are these people caring to Obama's meeting places the real deal or just a scare tactic for the media to run their left sided brain with. Could it be they are shooting ACORN style tactics to get people to question the motives of the conservative movements. Such as those at town hall meetings across the nation. I'm not into conspiracies just into past events and associations to the powers that be. Just my input. But I think its a bad Idea to carry to an Obama speech. Do you think the FBI would be an escort to these people. I mean this is a president? Try to open carry into an airport and see what happens to you? My point is, Is this are these real gun advocate's?
I agree with ranger2
The whole reason this guy brought a military style rifle to an Obama protest was to be noticed... and it obviously worked. I personally feel in order to keep our 2nd amendment we need to exercise our right to bear arms and do not just shrivel up and hid from somebody fearing we might offend somebody who is "sensitive" being around real people. We can't make everybody...
Did anybody see the unedited footage of this guy? NBC people made it a race deal and the guy was BLACK. He was really a radio DJ who did it to prove a point and for publicity. We need to keep a close eye on who the media sterotyping us as and who gets stereotyped with us. If we don't speak up against whats being reported, then we can kiss our freedoms goodbye.
while i fully agree no one should lose there second amendment right i do believe in "gun control" and don't take that the wrong way. i don't think openly displaying guns at a protest is a good idea at all first of all it makes sportsman and gun owners look bad, because people see these people trying to "establish dominance" by openly showing guns to scare people that do not agree with them, the media will stereotype those people with all gun owners.
