Survival
I'm not a happy kid right now. I'm 15 years old, and my choices for when I leave high school range from culinary school to working at my dad's truck shop. This is stressful enough. But what makes it even worse is the people I go to school with.
I'm not a big guy, at least when it comes to muscle. You could call me chubby, and short. I'm not fat, I refuse to call myself fat, because I do WORK, and when I think of FAT people, I think of lazy people with no control over their eating habits. But it doesn't matter.
Kids at my school are wild! They will invade your personal space, no questions asked, because A: Im not big enough to fight some muscled up jock. I can't do it! B: If I were to try, I'd (my parents) be charged out the ass with a big fat ticket! They do it because I'm smaller than them, and because I'm the only one with some sense. That makes me vulnerable. I refuse to fall to their level of primeval behavior!
They grab my chest, do the whole "got your nipple" thing, and run off. They clip my shoulder on purpose in the halls ( I take this as a challenge, but should'nt a challenge have a reason) .They copy my work (steal my thought) They treat every word as a sex joke. Yet the teachers do nothing. In fact, these are their "favorite" students, because they are involved in sports, so alot slides. They are given unfair advantage because they play sports, and they are wealthy!
I actually do some useful things. I am a Boy Scout. I brighten the lives of people in my community by being in Marching Band. I make a killer fried venison platter, and can make some mean jerky. Yet they can't even find Jeruselum on a map!
Guys, if these kids were my size, you'd bet I'd do something. But were talking big, tall jocks here. Steroid Popping (I know they do), tree trunk armed, hollipostale and fitch (those gay looking pink shirts) wearin' jocks. I'm defenseless. I just don't understand why they pick on me while I do nothing to hurt noone. Teachers won't help, I can't fight... I don't know what to do!
Any advice, or from kids my age, similar stories?
Ignore the fools.
Get lots of exercise and stay fit.
Be mature in your faith.
Work hard, you'll be fine.
I grew up hard being picked on in school and learned to get tough with the punks. I don't recommend that these days since they will kick you out of school for fighting and kicking a little ass.
Beat them where it counts, in the class room. Beat them in the game of life, make good decisions, work hard, get a good education and never give up. Get into shape if you have the time. Start running make a goal of being able to run a seven minuet mile for a couple miles. Make a goal of getting up to a couple hundred pushups and sit ups a day. These guys have lots of red muscle as apposed to white muscle. Which means they are strong at first but they tire easily. A white muscle will last all day long, getting the job done. I know it's hard to ignore ( I am a little hot headed myself) but these guys are highly immature for their age and unless they start taking life seriously they will be working for you.
Good advice here, back in the day we go out and duke it out, now you can't do that anymore because the family like to sue you when you kick their behind...My son got in a fight with a bully and if was four of them trying to jump him...He defend himself from getting beat up but they kick their behind..That was three years ago and I told the principal he will never come back to this school again because he never did anything with those bully's...
As a teacher I can tell you that there are teachers in every school that sincerely care about each students well being. Besides taking all the above advice about getting fit and hitting the weights, The best advice I can give is to find a teacher that you can bond with. Maybe strike up a conversation about hunting or something else that interests you. You will find that teachers do care and once the "muscled up jocks" see you building rapport with a teacher they will be more apt to leave you alone and to go about your business. Best of luck. If you need me to I can come out there and let these guys know what is up I can. (I have some muscle, but am not a steroided up jock)
stormn,
A + 1 for you... I like your mentallity and show this jockey, messed with their own size!!!I truly dislike bully's...
Im 16 and have a similar problem. They dont hit me or anything like that and their my size, but the sex joke thing and class favorite thing is the same. I had a few wanting to fight the other day. I always tell em I wont fight at school but if they want to fight to come to my house. Then they kinda back off a little. Show them youre not playing. Get a few friends to help you out. Theyll pick on you less if you have people withb you. If you cant match up to them in physical strength, make them look stupid in class when they cant do anything. When you see em copying you, put the wrong answer and correct it later. Just remember that thoses immature jocks will end up losers in life and get what they deserve. People always get a taste of theyre own medicine sometime.
Hang in their guys. Don't let these idiots break your spirit. I'm sure when you go to you're high school reunion, the roles will be reversed and these guys will be nothing while you'll be the successful ones. Trust me. Keep your chin up! and don't stoop to their level.
I remember highschool being something like that. Are you interested in any sports at all? I mean you don't need to be a ripped jock to participate in a sport. The reason I ask is because when you are a part of a team, your team mates tend to look out for you, which can help in these types of situations. I played soccer, baseball, and bowling. See if you can find something that suits you. Also, try to surround yourself with friends that are the type of kids NOBODY messes with. You know, the big kids with a good personality, who are fairly open and outgoing, but piss em off and you're in for a rodeo types. That was the strategy I formulated to get through highschool unscathed, and it worked. Didn't get into any fights and never really had any confrontations either.
It's true what everyone is saying about them being losers in life. I remeber a few of the big "hot shot jocks" from my highschool days...I run into them when I go back home from time to time. That's right...they're still living in the same rinky dink town. The ones that tried to move away ended up coming back fairly quickly. Most of them have minimum wage jobs, that they hate. Can't say I feel sorry for them because I don't. They made their bed several years ago, and now they must lay in it.
Based on your post (by this I mean your writing skills...a few typos, but nothing out of the norm), you seem like a well educated individual. Keep up the good work, and karma will do the rest.
A final piece of advice: Make friends, not enemies...you never know who will be your boss someday, and you never know who you will need to count on for a favor, or to save your life. Idiots like the ones you're describing have not learned this yet, so you're WAY ahead of the game ;-)
You are right. I am friends with alot of sports guys, mostly basketball, track, and tennis. These guys play sports, but none of them mess with me because I'm not interested in them. Just like they are not hunters, and I don't down them for that.
I do have "brotherhood" with fellow band people, and despite what you see on T.V, there are some big guys in there. It isn't all nerds. I feel very safe with all of them.
See, I'm the kind of guy that would buy dinner for a guy I didn't know, as long as he was nice. All people start out as a clean slate in my book, and what I think of them after I meet them is usually up to them. It's hard to make me not like you.
Thank you guys so much for all the feedback. It is great to have a community that you can share a common interest with to help you. I'd buy you all dinner, lol.
JUst remember people like that only make fun of others because theyre insecure deep inside. They do it in hopes of making them feel better about themselves. I kinda feel sorry for em. I dont really care when they mess with me. I just remind myself that theyll get theirs one day.Hope they ease up on you. One day theyll need your pity or help and you can remind them of the crap they did to you.jerks like that will always end up losers in life. At least youll be able to survive if you get lost. All their sport skills wont help them then.
Don't let them get to you. When they see that you're bothered, it makes them try all the harder in most circumstances. Their actions can be likened to bucks in the rut. Sex-crazed and challenging others, it doesn't seem all that dissimilar, does it?
The first couple of years in high school can be tough getting acclimated to the environment. Just remember what you're going through now when you're closing out your high school years. There's always a new crop of freshmen joining the fold and trust me, they'll be feeling the same frustrations that you're going through. Look out for them if you can, you don't have to big, there's strength in numbers.
You seem the kind that has heart, and a good head on your shoulders. Remember too that adversity comes into life and makes us grow as individuals. These growing pains will do more than you would expect to build a strong character and persevereance for life's unexpected turns. Count it a blessing that you will be more mature and ready to meet life's challenges that your adversaries. They could end up working for you someday, or spend the rest of their lives asking people "if they'd like fries with that?"
GOD bless you son for having a good brain and heart.
Just remember High School is just a "phase" in your life(abet a TOUGH phase) and when it's over where will the "steroid boys" be ?
Longing for the "greatness" they HAD along with remembering when they had a "willy" ! Steroids cause MAJOR SHRINKAGE !
My mind is flooded with my own teenage years -- many stories of being picked on, being the youngest and the smallest, having to fight hard against guys who were only using me for "practice"... Learning how to give as well as take. And somewhere along the line, that stuff was all ancient history.
It sure doesn't hurt to learn how to "take care of yourself". If you learn good self defense and fighting skils, you have an option: you can turn the other cheek ... or not. If you can't defend yourself, you have no option.
As a Boy Scout, you know something about working hard to become strong in character and more mature. Decide that small doesn't equal defeated. Become strong in spirit and that strength will find its way into your actions and reactions.
These days will pass. You will show up at your 10 year reunion and all the cheerleaders will be fat. The jocks will be alcoholics. And everybody will be pretending that they are something that they are not -- except you, because you learned now not to be intimidated and how to take on the challenges appropriately.
Just wanted to check back in and see if any of our advice has helped. Hope all is well!
Just wait. Stick it out and be tough. What goes around comes around. While you're making something of yourself, they'll be drinking their faces off to impress people that aren't impressed, maiming themselves afterwards because they thought they could drive that way, getting trampled by a moose because they deserve it, or finding out after decades of calling people "fags" that they themselves are actually homos. That's my favorite. Then they try to kill themselves in a wimpy way like popping pills but fail because they aren't man enough to pull the trigger, and get institutionalized. Who's laughing now? You.
I was lucky enough to go to transfer to a good HS with good kids and good teachers where this crap wouldn't fly. My first one was more like yours and it pissed me off, I was too nice to tolerate that sad old "system". That and the new football team was much better ha ha. The new school was quite different with honorable upstanding "jocks" (we hated that stupid title). When the A-holes pulled this crap on less physically capable dudes, they got clobbered by us. They thought this usual high school stereotype applied - "hey let's pick on losers in front of the football players they'll think it's cool haha". Nope. Sorry. Not here. It was very refreshing to go to a school like this. Just know that there is hope out there and not everywhere is like this. You'll make it just fine.
Also, a lot can change from 15 to graduation. The girls might grow up, reject the jerks and get interested in you. You might turn into a beast. Wouldn't hurt to pump some iron or carry your loaded down hunting pack and a rifle up some hills here and there. Chicks dig that.
Yeah I agree with shane. Theyll end up in some sad little spot in life with no wife, job, or home. But Im glad theyre are people like that...somebodys got to work at mcdonalds and give us our big macs hahahaha!
I know everyone said it all ready but it's true,These chumps don't matter. When you get out of high school you will make friends with people that you have things in common with and all of the sudden you realize that you have already forgotten your hatred. When I was in school I didn't get messed with to much but I still hated the same crowd you speak of.I was good at sports but didn't want to compete with idiots.I got super into BMX (not racing) mostly dirt jumping. This I was competing with myself.I would build new jumps or go to other trails and be scared. But I would make myself do it.Overcome obstacles of obscurity... do this and you will go to bed feeling like a man.In other words find something that gives you a sense of accomplishment and inner pride. Then you can look them in the eye and not be scared or mad anymore.Hatred can be a huge motivator if properly channeled.
crawlife is right. Youll finally realizre that they dont matter, if you havent already. Just do your own thing and find your own crowd. Insecure people like them will grow up lonely and depressed, with no real friends.
Thanks guys. Your comments are really helping. I'm glad to see that there are good people here.
As long as there are sportsmen there will be decent people, since most real sportsmen are good people. I mean, really, how many jerks are on this site compared to others?I can think of two.
I have never really been bullied. im16 and in the top 10 of my class. the only thing I really get any heat about is hunting. I don't live in the country, but I don't live in the city so I'm inbetween. Alot of kids in my school hunt, but some of the one's who don't treat all of the hunters like savages. I have noticed teachers favor jocks. but don't let them get to you.
I wish I was your age, one thing to pick on me (catch me if you can!) is one thing. Pick on my friend?; you really don't want to go there!!!
Don't worry about these fools! When they are out of school, they will be out of life living in some roach infested apartment while you’re living the life!
WAM is right!!!!!
Just don't do anything that would put you into trouble. Push comes to shove, you can actually file charges on these punks. There is no minimum of age for filing a police report!
Assault and battery? How deep are these kids parents pockets, there going to need it when the prosecutor gets the case!
I had a few run in's with some people like that in my schools in jr &sr high, fortunately I had many friends.
So whay I would do was back up just out of range of being hit, an upd very quietly tell them yo try and kick me, I would grab their foot lift it up high enough to dump them on the ground in front of several of my friends. It usually humiliated them enough that I only had to do it once. And never had problems after that.
No one ever got hurt exept for being humiliated in front of a crowd. If a teacher saw it I was not the one in trouble.
what*
In later life in the Army needed and whenever I did the same thing, except I would follow up with a kick to the "nads" in front of witnesses usually NCO's and usually only once.
You sound like me when I was in high school. For some reason by the time I was a senior I grew 1 foot and lost 30 pounds. Hit the books and study hard. After a couple years college. ROTC was great. 4 years military put me in shape, and finally 35 years as a law enforcement officer. When I was your age in high school poeple would have bet you 1 million dollars that I would not have ended up that way. Set your sights high and stick to them. You can do it. Get tough mentally. Vietnam made me grow up in a hurry.
