Saltwater
MRIP Registry Information The new National Saltwater Angler Registry was launched by the federal government on Jan. 1, 2010 and will require virtually all saltwater recreational anglers in the United States (including Virginia) to call each year and register. The program is an effort to build a complete and accurate "phonebook" to better contact anglers to obtain catch information directly from them. Registration can be done through a toll-free number, 1-888-674-7411, or online at www.CountMyFish.noaa.gov. Anglers will be required to provide their names, dates of birth, addresses, telephone numbers, and the regions where they intend to fish, although they will not be restricted to fishing only in those regions and will not be required to register separately for each region in which they fish. There will be no charge to register until 2011, at which point an annual registration fee of about $25 a year will apply. All fees collected through this federal program will go to the U.S. treasury. Those exempted from Registry requirements are: anglers under the age of 16; those who only fish on licensed charter, party or guide boats; hold a Highly Migratory Species Angling permit; or hold and are fishing under a valid commercial or subsistence fishing license or permit. The National Saltwater Angler Registry is a federal, not state, requirement. State fishing license fees will continue to be required. For more information on the Registry, please go to www.CountMyFish.noaa.gov. A Virginia Marine Resources Commission report to the General Assembly on the subject can be found in the following document:
Needless to say this will be my last year buying a Saltwater fishing license AGAIN... There is no justification for this money to go to the US Treasurey.
This is an unwarrented Tax on fishing! What is the US Treasurey going to use the money for?
It's NOT going towards Conservation efforts, Research, Articicial Reefs, Benefitting coastlines or the plants, wildlife and marine life... So Why are we being targetted to pay a tax/fine/levy to the US Treasurey for enjoying recreational fishing?
I like the idea of the registry for survey purposes, but the fee? I'm not sure I care for that, especially since they are not very forthcoming on what that money will be used for. 86Ram- they don't say it doesn't go to conservation efforts, but the fact that they don't say where it goes leads me to believe you are right and it likely won't go that route. I am assuming it will go to fund the surveys and the people that analyze the data gathered. This will likely lead to better management of the fishery, but...
Also, I don't see why this info can't be gathered from the state fishing lic.???? In MI we have to scan our driver's lic, which has all that info on it. Seems to me, that if they Feds and the state could just communicate they would already have access to this information.
You don't need to register/pay the fee if you use a charter--I bet the charter industry is backing this all the way.
If this is aimed at saltwater fishing it will soon be asking the same of freshwater fishing. What a way for Sam to get into our pockets, through fishing, geez!
I did go to the suggested web site: https://www.countmyfish.noaa.gov/aboutus/organization/who_needs_angler_r... I learned that if you hold a saltwater fishing license from your state then you are automatically registered with the National Registry. This is true for all or the west coast states, and some of the eastern seaboard.
With each new unwarranted intrusion into our lives and against our liberty I HOPE that it will be the last of Obama Bin Lyin's CHANGE. If ever I was worried that I would miss the ocean this cured me.
Well I won't be going saltwater fishing any more, I really hope this comes back and bites the Federal Government in the rear. Who are they to need that information? Who are they to force us to pay in the Bloody ocean? Next they will charge us to go hunting.
The government needs to be checking and inforcing our National Waters. Our fish/shrimping trawlers bycatch is and has been taking a toll on almost everything in saltwater, as well as for foreign nation's fishing vessels. All of these need to be better monitored rather than ask the sport fishing population to report the few fish they catch and release or take home. On another note there needs to be more done to stop dumping in our waters. a walk on any of our nations beaches will show 1-2% of what's floating in our waters. One way would be to require all ships, tugs and boats of all size keep and report logs of where their refuse goes. It would'nt be hard to set up trash collection stations ar harbors and ports where recepts would be handed out to all boats/ships complying. Dumpers could then be easily tracked and fined.
