Watching the Outdoors Channel this morning didn't catch the name of the show. Two Black Fells hunting Caribou on a river and the fella said, there is no such thing of a bad day when you got good gear!
I can remember as a kid, thinking the GEAR I had was the cat's meow. Found out later in life, it was just what pop and grampaw could afford! Can't relate the countless hours of enjoyment I had with poor or mediocre gear!!
Like I said on the blog:
You don't need a Rolls to get to the dance! You just gotta know how to dance!! LOL!!
When I was growing up and hunting I didn't even know what gear was. I thought a brown duck coat, blue jeans and white thermal underwear was top of the line. Gore Tex wasn't known of all I had was a pair of 5 buckle artics over a pair of leather shoes. Things have come a long way.
Seems like people with the most and fanciest gear do the least hunting and fishing.
The latest equipment is not important. Good equipment kept clean and organized is critical. Sometimes washing or cleaning the old one is as good as buying a new one.
I had a friend with 125 guns and he insisted he NEEDED another 16 gauge bird gun. Then I saw a guy break 49 out of 50 targets at sporting clays with an 870 pump. It was his only gun. He wore jeans, a Remington cap and a Kmart vest. Everyone else had foreign over & unders and fancy trappings. I don't know about them but I felt foolish.
well, I love the wool, I love the synthetics, but I would never hunt in carharts again, not after seeing how a person can be shot by wanting to look like a deer (or brown mass)
I do have carhart pants/bibs for briars and such but in the woods...its BLAZING orange!
and I love my Kmart o/u 12gage, it has put more meat in the freezer then most people ever have, goose, deer, rabbit, etc!
And I love having spare socks that I vacuum pack. love those dry socks!
me and my cousin used to have the best time fishing on an old leaky jon boat that we had to plug with sticks. we spent countless hours on that old junk but it floated sorta and helped us catch a ton of fish. gear doesnt make the trip the people make the trip

I'm not much of a gear head but I'd have to agree. New pair of boots that fit and a raincoat that doesn't leak too much about do it for me.
The word I learned in Alaska that made my life bearable is called
GORE-TEX® !!!

good gear would be a good thing with out it would be a poor hunting trip .
It's not about the gear, it's about the passion
CarnieHunter,
Yeah but the gear helps haha. But I agree.
Well, while I love to see hunting more 'out front', in the modern world such shows are driven by sponsors.
A show like most of these that would not try to push gear wouldn't be on long.
It's amazing how much you can spend on fancy stuff, and it's not one bit more effective than my old cartridge belt and buttpack.
i agree with half of that but it will be just as bad if not worse if u doint even see an animal
Being warm, dry, and well fed are good enough as long as I'm having a good time.

I agree with CAS - its the people and the wildreness that make the trip, not the gear used.
I appreciate your concern MG but I DO wear a blaze orange vest and hat of ski mask depending on weather.
