Good question for Presidents Day. Absolutely, TR was very progressive. He was the first U.S President to advocate for the conservation movement, which has evolved into the modern day environmental movement. His visionary leadership led to the preservation of natural, historical, and cultural treasures under the Antiquities Act, some as National Monuments. Part of his legacy is our present day National Park and Forrest systems.

However, the progressive label usually refers to TR's anti-trust legislation. He was known as a ‘trust’ or ‘monopoly buster’. TR also introduced the phrase "Square Deal" to describe his progressive views, stressing the equality of opportunity for all citizens, and government regulations to encourage such.

TR served the country as President from 1901 to 1908, then his hand-picked successor, William Taft, followed, but less boldly in the progressive path that TR had blazed. Roosevelt, frustrated with Taft for deferring to what TR ridiculed as the "hidebound reactionaries" of the Republican Party. Roosevelt, in response to what he saw as ineffective leadership by Taft and other Republicans, announced a third-party bid in 1912, under the banner of what he called the Progressive Party. The media dubbed it the Bull Moose Party, using the metaphor TR used in describing himself.

So, yes, Teddy Roosevelt was a self described progressive, as he would be in politics today.

I feel like T.R was a progressive..I found out about this in a history class I was taking online recently..(I checked and made my own opinion) I like Glenn Beck, BUT somethings need to be taken with a grain of salt. Beck can go overboard, thats why I research and form my own opinion, as you obviously seem to be..Really what does it matter!..It is actually a poor argument on Becks side because T.R left an amazing legacy so folks will think, hhmmm progressive not bad.

Yes, good job, Dakota. Most folks don't understand that there was a Progressive Party as well as a progressive movement. The term was used to describe a radical liberal doctrine. It wasn't until after the Communist Russian Revolution of 1917 that socialist liberalism (i.e. progressivism) took on such evil connotations in the West.

Teddy was a great outdoorsman. But one heck of a disater followed in his footsteps for the American people not all his fault,The great dust bowl, the graet depression,It took four terms in office for Franklin D Roosevelt to deal with all of the above problems, and the WORLD WAR 11 to test the American people and they come out and took the lead in the world.Teddy was a great conservationist and i honor him for his service.

Saying Teddy Roosevelt was responsible for the dust bowl and the great depression, which occured more than 20 years after TR left office, is like blaming Gerald Ford with the bombing of the Twin Towers.

I am not blaming Teddy for the dust bowl it was nature and the result of the american people trying to farm the great plains which was not teddy's doing it was before him that the land grants were issued.A depression does not happen overnight policies put in place like William H Taft Income tax the first ever. You know where you have too pay to work.Taft was between the Roosevelts and Franklin inherited a depression.Teddy loved to be a soldier he was born a little to late to enjoy the life that he yearned to live.Although he hunted the rough and toughest places in the world with a mediocre calber .405 was his largest gun.He was a mans man.He would rather hunt than preside.

TR was one of the greatest conservationists, good soldier, heck of an outdoorsman, American hero, accomplished adventurer, and yes, unfortunately, a Progressive. Yes, he did in fact say, "The Hell with the constitution....". A truly great man, but a little politically confused. No one should hold office in America that sees the Constitution of the United States as an obstacle to "find a way around". Don't confuse Progressive (with a capital P) with progressive (with a small p). Beck is making great progress warning America about the threat of Progressives.

My sentiments exactly beck may be a little loud but has a good head on him.Too smart to get into politics. He like me believes that history will repeat itself sadly a lot will lose a lot even more than we already have. But the sooner that people realize the better it will be,I for on have already started to prepare to hard times. As well as my children. When the dollar is worth 50 cents something is sorely wrong.

TR started the same massive govt spending that Obama has copied, and it took us nearly 10 yrs. to recover from it. We badly dipped into a prolonged, double dip recession. Liberals do not want to recognize that fact at all. And why we are stating facts that only the private sector can create a REAL job, and the govt can not..only a temporary job paid for by the tax payer that runs up massive debt. Obama duplicated TR's socialist experiment, and many responsible conservatives predicted just what is now happening. A 6-9 mo., on ave recession, has turned into a 4 yr. recession with the possibility of a double dip just like TR created. We were at 8% unemployment, and the left's social experiment drove us over 10%, and has created massive debt..near 5 trillion dollars of debt in just the time Obama took office. Unemployment extended to 99 weeks as if it is a welfare program.

Jere..Please recognize the distinction between a GOOD rich guy, and a TERRIBLE rich guy. A good rich guy is a liberal. They say things like Bill Clinton says, or Bill Gates says, or Buffet says, about rich folks needing to be taxed more. The bad rich guys are guys like the Koch Bros. who made a fortune in Big Oil. Daddy Koch developed a "cracking" method for converting oil to gasoline. They have given a great deal of money to charities, but no matter that. That gets overlooked. They are capitalists. They may even have invested dollars in the Keystone Pipeline if Obama doesn't prevent it from being built. No matter it will be built with private investment dollars as well rather than the tax payer dollars that Obama has wasted, giving a lot of it to his very wealthy donors. These Koch Bros. are the evil rich folks.
