Im not for bashing anyone or any company on this website. But that is exactly what i am about to do. I went to cabelas in Buda, Texas today to return a spotting scope my father was given for christmas this past year since the lense broke. So i went to the customer service desk and they said since it was a gift and i had no receit we couldnt exchange it. Now to my understanding they could give me a new one, send the broke one back to the manufactor and have it replaced. cabelas doesnt loose money we get a new scope no biggie. But nope they wouldnt do it. It says on their website satisfaction guaranteed! Horse crap! This has happened twice to me one other time with game cameras. So if yall shop at cabelas make SURE you keep your receit or else they will just smile at you and say thank you for spending your money here with us, we cant help you but here is a boot in the butt for you! I personally am cutting up my cabelas card!
Thanks, it's good to know the way you got treated.
I don't find the prices that good anyway.
It's alway good to hear others opinions on the places they deal with.
That said I did get a great deal on a muzzleloader at the Cabelas here in Michigan a few years ago, but I haven't bought from them since mostly because I can get better deals elsewhere.
I find this hard to believe, I was in the Kearney Ne store and watched a woman return 2 coats that were well worn and obviously several years old. Granted she didn't get a full price back for them but she still got money back. I agree they are a little high on their prices but I've found their return policy pretty good in other instances also.
Not an excuse but how did lens get broken.
Sorry that you had so much trouble, but I've been a Cabelas customer for many years and have never had any problems.
OK, let me get this straight, you tried to exchange a spotting scope at Cabela's that had been given to your father the "previous" Christmas because a lense cracked without any proof that it had been purchased from Cabela's originally and you're mad because they wouldn't just give you a new one?...Now, by any chance did someone borrow Daddy's prized gift, break it, and doesn't want to pay to get it fixed and doesn't want Daddy to know? Sounds like you need to man-up, contact the manufacturer and cough up the dough for the repair to me.
Wow Hunter 1947 you nailed it on the head. No actually I live about an hour closer than my father does to the store! So when me and my wife went to their house for a sunday dinner he asked me to take it in! He got the scope three months ago, which would have been this past year! But actually your just trying to get a rise out of me and i aint goin to be rude back. But you might try to learn to be polite you grummpy ass! Also just to let everyone know, I called the manager of the store here a couple days back and told him my story. He was a very nice man and said that he will exchange it for me. I just returned from the store when i wrote the article and was heated. I still feel their return policy is not as good as other stores, but the quality and knowledge of the people who work their make the store what it is. So F&S will you remove this message do to its inaccuracy? But please wait till hunter1947 reads it first.

i like shopping at bass pro shops personally. they have a great selection of fishing and hunting gear, and well i can at least say this for the one in Savannah Ga. the staff there is very friendly and will try to help you no matter what the problem is.
Well Victory, I read it. To bad you didn't take time the first time to provide this additional detail. Say what you want about me, but I just replied to your original rant as I read it. In the future maybe you shouldn't react to things while you are upset...

You are in need of your meds....
My experience with Cabela's over the years has been very good, althought I have never returned anything either. I guess it depends on the situation and facts of the product.MOST stores ask if the item is a gift for the specific need of a "Gift Receipt". I worked at Dick's Sporting Goods for over 4 years, and they took back just about everything! IF you had a receipt, within 90 days of return, you would get your full money back or exchange, customer's choice. After 90days, and the item is not covered by manufacture's warranty, the customer could choose a replacement item, or store credit for the said amount of the item. NO RECEIPT; STORE CREDIT. Unbelievable! Trust me, people returned JUNK for store credit and GOT IT! Customer service is one thing, but that policy was just dumb! One cannot stay in business, keep prices down, while giving things away! KEEP YOUR RECEIPT even if you charge it, a "return everything policy" is for people wanting to cheat the system.
My advice was gonna be to always ask to speak to the manager if you don't get the service you wanted. I see that you did that by phone later, but as a rule, if I try to exchange something, and get turned down, I don't leave until I speak to the head honcho face to face. It's served me well on numerous occasions.
I shop cabelas online and mail order catalog by phone. I have only had to return two items and got great service but I always had my receipt.
that sucks for. i only went too one once in hamburg pa andjust got some arows and jigheads so i didnt get any trouble. but im not gonna join ya on your ban cause i never really go here and i mean they have to floors tons of stuff, a gamefish aquarium, tons of rooms ful of mounts, a restraaunt, aand a freakin mountain filld with full body mounts
I cut up my cabelas card a long time ago. BTW, there are cheaper alternatives. I find it to be overpriced
It is not always the service that is bad, more like the service personel. These big box stores have no real intention of providing bad service, especially in todays era of commnications, this beast we call the web touches millions, reputations can be ruined rather quickly nowadays.
Glad to hear things got straightened out for you.
Customer service crap is the biggest lie i've ever heard from stores there isn't one that I've heard about actually keeps the truth.
I live about an hour from the original (Sidney, NE) store, and I have noticed varying degrees of customer service. I think a lot of it comes down to who you speak with. Like any other business, they are there to make money. The employees are going to push back on returns when they can, but usually, a talk with the nearest manager is going to clear things up. A good majority of my visits, whether returning something or not, have been very pleasant. So, I would give them another chance. Just my 2 cents though. :)
most of the time there prices are to expensive for me unless it is a big want or need for me. i see where you are coming from because it has happened to me before at cabeles before.
The only problem I ever had with Cabela's is some of their employees laughing at me for what must have been a stupid question,SEE THERE ARE STUPID QUESTIONS.(Oh by the way bass pro had what I needed)
I have seen scope lenses crack for no reason but due to manufacturer didn't properly prepare the lens or bad fitting.
Bottom line: If I was the store manager I would have checked my archives for that model and perhaps if possible for the purchase, it can be done. After verifying the model I would have replaced it without second thought. Now because of the bad publicity a few people that read this including myself will not shop Cabela’s, there bad! I’ve been to the Fort Worth Store several times and the idiots there always trying to impress on me junk Shooting Science. For example, the 25 WSSM although I pointed out on their chart is 100 fps slower than the 25-06. But still to them with the facts in their face the 25 WSSM is a superior cartridge to the 25-06.
Went to Bass Pro, I knew what I wanted and they listened without giving me any BS and respectably gave me suggestions and alternatives I never thought of. Yep, I got what I needed and the help with friendly professional help I did!
YABUDDY!
Herter's, I wonder if they are still around?
Clay,
I think they were bought out by Cabela's since Cabela's sells Herter's brand of waterfowl gear (or did). Gander Mountain's mail order business, not the retail stores, was bought by Cabela's more than 10 years ago.
I find this very hard to believe. I have had nothing but great experiences with Cabelas and their return/satisfaction policy. I have purchased ridiculous amounts of gear from Cabelas and every time I have had a problem, it was never an issue. I don't shop cabelas for their prices, I shop them for their customer service.
WA Mtnhunter
When I was 13 my Father bought me a Herter's 40 pound bow dark grey fiber glass that shot like a rifle. A week later I got the limb caught up in the front spokes of my bike :(
I shop at Cabelas frequently and have never had a single problem with their customer service. I have always found the personal to be courteous and receptive to what I'm trying to convey to them.I shoot a bunch of 22 mag. and their Fiocci jhp work great for general shooting and you can't find a better price. The other store that I've had tremendous success with is L.L.Bean. I personally believe that attitude is a part of a person success in returning certain items.

I want to hear about the Herter's bow.
If you dont have a receit you cant return anything at most stores.
I begrudgely gave up some tropy whitetail racks to the Wheeling, WV Cabelas store because my DNR boss at the time said we would. They were racks that I had taken from persons that I had arrested for killing illegal deer. We used them to take to clubs and fairs for a display we called the "Wall of Shame". I had planned to visit the store and see what they had done with the racks and three weeks ago I made the trip( three hours from my house) I looked at their whitetail display and they did a fine job with the racks putting them on full mounts in natural settings. I had put several things in my cart and my wife had done likewise. I was in the market for a heavy barrel .223 varmit rifle. In the sale paper was a Rem. SPS Stainless rifle exactly what I was loking for at a good price ( something that is rare at Cabelas). I went to the gun counter and there was not a customer anywhere in sight. There were 2 salespersons behind the counter. I walked to where the gun was on the rack and one of the salespersons was standing there. I asked if I could see the gun and he flipped the number machine and walked off. I stood there for a minute I'm sure looking amazed and he walked back. To make a long story short I have never been treated so rudely by a salesperson in my life and I will probably never step foot in another Cabelas again, There are too many other stores. If I had treated the public like that in my line of work I would have been standing tall in front of the Col. explaining my actions and asking not to be fired.
A well traveled friend who is good with a dollar says that if you want to go to look, go to Cabellas. If you want to buy, go to Bass Pro.
Sarge,
You should have contacted the store manager. You are apt to find a counter jerk in any business now days, gun departments seem to be a likely location. Many of these folks seem to have an overinflated opinion of themselves and need to have the hot air let out of them.
I've been in 6 different Cabela's in as many different states and have never found a more helpful staff. A staff member in the Lacy Washington store offered to have an out of stock item shipped to my home at the store sale price.
I've found that Cabela's has higher prices on some stuff and Bass Pro others. I can say that my local Bass Pro is hit or miss on some things but customer service is acceptable.
I no problem with Cabela's or Bass Pro or even Dick's but if I am closer I really Like Gart Sports in Denver, The original family sold off Gart Bros. Tried to buy is bat but the new owners would not sell so they started over. New Generation of the Family runs it now. Still have the best deals in the area.
Tractor supply company, now there is a great store. My not have hunting stuff but hey it's got everything else!
It is not a valid commendation for a store that a customer has never had a complaint, but rather that he has had a complaint, and it was handled to his satisfaction by the customer service department.
