Is it ethical to shoot animals out of the windows or doors of your house? I don't mean rodents like rabbits and squirrels. I mean turkeys, deer, and other large animals.

I would think it would be unethical to shoot from a window. My dad Hunts Elk and Mule deer from his garage though and i dont see any problem with that. Drink coffee walk out the garage and shoot. As long as the animal is shot legally with a quick and accurate shot so that the animal does not suffer. I noticed folks who live around my dad do similar things. Its not hunting, but just harvesting food.
I was watching a hunting show not too long ago and they took this old grain silo and cut windows in it and we're shooting out of it like an enormous blind. I guess you either want a "hunt" or a "sit." Sometimes one is better than the other.
I would also imagine that if you live out in the boonies, there's less concern about safety zones. By the letter of the law, a house is within a safety zone.
Here in Michigan it's illegal. I have deer coming through the yard all the time to bushwhack one from the house would not only be a violation of the law but in my opinion lazy. Now one may argue that in a survival situation it might be necessary but I would argue that in a survival situation all ethics on fair chase are irrelevant. Even though we live some distance from one another we know our neighbors and if someone was in that kind of dire straits we would all be there to help them before they had to resort to that.
My cousin came in from doing his farm work one day and saw a buck going thru the hayfield beside the house. In his socks and underware he stepped out the back door and killed the deer. Later that evening as we were skinning it one of our older guys with a real dry sense of humor said "if there's anything worse than a road hunter, it's a d*** house hunter!".
good story 007. I don't find it terribly unethical for a properly licensed "meat hunter" to harvest a deer off his own property in this manner if it's legal but i sure as hell wouldn't brag about it. It's not very sporting for sure. It isn't hunting and i'd not do it myself.
CL3 here you can shoot within the "Safety Zone" with written consent from any homeowner within that safety zone. If you're the only house within the zone that'd likely be easy to obtain. I do not know with certainty the legality of it because i'd not do it. If my family was hungry and broke though, you can bet your ass i'd do it.
I really don't see a problem if you have a tag for the animal, it is a safe place to shoot, it is legal, and you want the animal to eat. Sporting, not really but then again I have killed several deer in the woods that haven't been real sporting either.
Sitting at the base of a tree and having a buck come by and shooting it isn't real sporting as far as I'm concerned either. Here in WV it is legal.
When you have very little time to hunt due to work responsiblities, you legally take a deer where you can find it, which is what he did. It was his land, his house, and his underwear.
Just curios Sarge01; What do you find so unethical about killing a deer while sitting on the ground? I find it to be the same as being in a stand other than the height difference.
TT101, you might want to tread lightly here about ethical deer hunting after that display about hunting with dogs. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
TT101, I didn't say that killing a deer while sitting on the ground was unethical and don't know where you came up with that idea. We were talking about where we were sitting when we kill a deer whether it was in a house, against a tree, in a stand or whereever. I didn't say anything about being unethical I was refering to being sporting. I don't see anything unethical about it.
Sorry, I misread.
A tree stand, a tree stand with a cover around it and windows, a box stand with windows.......what is the technical difference? It's just a matter of opinion. NOW, that being said: I live in the country and have ample land and I have deer coming through. I do not and will not anyone else shoot on my property because I like watching these deer and last year I did put up a feeder so that my 12 grandkids can sit at the back door and watch for deer. I had 3 coming up to the porch while we sat there and talked. As long as we sat still but talked they just were curios. I use these deer to see the feeding patterns etc. People around my land hunt and they shoot these deer from time to time. I hunt on a plantation where there is a bunk house in the rear and a shooting part out of the same building in the front. Other hunters built this and used it but passed on so now we use it sometimes.
So, if there is no bating (if it is illegal in your state as it is here) and you are safe, I think that it all boils down to a matter of opinion that we could write reams of paper about. If it is for meat is one think, if you think it is "real" hunting well, there again we start with opinions. Kind of like "what is the best caliber for deer". isn't it? Obviously, I personally did not answer your question on purpose......it is a matter of your situation and your opinion.
it depends what your definition of "is" is.
I think shooting animals out of a house is way unethical. Where's the sport in that? If you want a buck so bad go out in the woods. Find a deer. Then shoot it.
EAG, you apparently aren't a farm girl or you'd understand that sometimes some folks have to take what they can get, when they can get it, and I do of course mean legally and inseason. Some folks don't have time to devote to hunting as they'd like, they have to make a living in a poultry house, on a tractor, or whatever.
007 I think that our EAG is a ghost of a thorn from the past.
I thought the same thing. Comes from hanging around you and the rest of the boys in brown, I guess. By the way, next class is set for April at Camp Pinnacle. Looking forward to it.
Yes, now apparantly a transgendered thorn from the past...
The biggest hog I ever killed, I shot while I was standing in the door of my camp while he was eating millet I'd planted down the hill for my turkeys. I'd do that again anytime, but I wouldn't shoot a deer that way---the area around the camp is a sanctuary, anyhow. I've been sorely tempted, but as Bee, 007, etc. have said, "It just ain't right."
----And yes, there is a definite resemblance to past pains.
the way seasons have been shortened and the amount of hours one has to work just to get by nowadays, if you have a tag and it is safe, go for it.
As long as it's a safe legal shot go right ahead. There are people that hike to hunt places I can see from my back deck..
For me that would ruin the whole hunting experience. If your able to walk into the woods then IMO you should be out there.
