If You Could Only Shoot One Caliber the Rest of Your Life

Uploaded on October 22, 2011

We have had a hotly contested debate around the campfire at elk camp, which began when discussing the pros and cons of various calibers when hunting elk. Eventually, someone there down the gauntlet and asked, okay...if you could only hunt with one caliber, for any and all species the rest of your life, what would it be? My choice was .30-.30, what is yours and why?

I would have to say something in the 284 caliber because I like the bullet selection and the higher BC of the bullets compared to the 30 cals and others. My first love is coyote hunting and I would load up some 120 gr slugs to introduce to any dog at any distance. Elk hunting? No problem, just get a good 175g partition and ol wapati wont know what hit him. Deer and antelope can be taken with a 120 but would be best served with a 140g slug. If I had to choose a cartridge it would probably be the 7mm Rem Mag, not because I think its better than the rest - its not - but because of its avalibility.

I use a .270. It works great for elk. It flys flater then a 3006 it may not hit quit as hard, but close enough. It works for deer too. But the main reason I use the .270 is because my grand dad did, and he didn't like having to pack more then one kind of ammo for the kid (me at the time). So more then any great bulistic reason I use it because my grand dad did. You know just remebering the hunting trips with him and telling this story made me smile.

338/06 A Square. Comfortable power with a 210 grain slug and a trajectory that is as flat as a 30/06.

My only deer rifle is a .270, and it's done the job so far. My dad would definitely say .25-06 for the same reason.

This may be a little out of the ordinary, but I would have to go with a .22 for two reasons. Ammo is the cheapest, and there is not an animal on the planet that I know of that can't be taken down with a well placed (operative words) shot.

.348, since it can take down any North American mammal. Expensive rounds mean more accurate shooting as well.

Even though I love my 7mm-08, I'd have to go with the .270.

.22 long! While it wouldn't stop a charging bear, It could kill everything I'd need it to.

When I was young I saw my friend's grandfather drop a big doe out of his kitchen window with a clean shot right in the ear at probably like 20 yards! I'll never forget it! To this day why he used a .22 instead of anyone of his deer rifles is beyond me, he had no neighbors so nobody would have caught him shooting from his house. Plus, had he not hit perfectly he would've just injured it. But I know it can be done. *would never recommend anyone trying it!*
