Campfire
First time posting, apologize in advance if I step on any forum rules.
I enjoy hiking (and fishing, never hunted though) and plan on doing so in the fall. Most of the areas I hike are multi-use areas (hunting, fishing, atv, horseback), though the primary use is hunting (just more of a hunting culture in the area). What I was looking for was any tips for hiking that would ... well basically help insure I wont get shot. I know the basic tips (wear 500 sq in of hunter orange, check to make sure the area hasnt been restricted for hunting season).
Any other tips hunters may have out there (ok I can guess at least one person suggesting "Dont go hiking")? If someone is mistakenly shot at, what then (serious, though admittedly naive question)? Do you file a police report, call a game warden, scream lol. Thx in advance and happy hunting.
The wearing of orange, etc., that you mentioned is likely all you can do, though I'd suggest an orange hat or cap, too. The vast majority of hunters are careful and serious people, but there are enough idiots out there that you have to worry about them. It is probably not a good idea to hike early or late or in conditions of limited visibility. Stick to established and frequently used hiking trails. If you are shot at, call the police, sheriff, game warden, mama and the national guard---that is not acceptable behaviour for you to put up with---yell loudly that you are not a deer---tell them how you really feel. Have a good time.
i agree with country road.
let them know that you are there. you are not a deer and tell them so. wear all orange if that makes you feel safer.
Wear your orange but also do not make any effort to be quiet. Make normal noise and talk to your hiking partners if you have any along. Most hunters (all should) will verify what they are aiming at before firing but it may help if they hear you coming. You don't have to yell but make a little noise. Hunters will notice it. Hunters hunting in such areas should also be on gaurd for hikers.
