Campfire
There's a race of men who don't fit in.
A race that can't stand still.
So they break the hearts of kith and kin.
And they roam the world at will.
They range the field and they rove the flood.
And they climb the mountain's crest;
Their's is the curse of gypsy blood,
And they don't know how to rest.
Robert Frost
I bid you ado

Great poem. Good to see poetry on these pages. Thank you Alabama.
Good poem Alabamaoutlaw. Take care. I'm glad to have had some good chats with you.
First poetry I've heard on this site. Thats a great poem
good to know that others enjoy a man of simple pleasures of life like Frost, all he ever wanted was to farm, but with tragedy in his family with menatal problems his farming never got of the road, and that my friend has made all the difference.
As too Alabama, Im glad my road intersected with yours, hopefully I will cross your road again, or you mine.
dandy poem.
Ah, I see Matt is well-versed in Frost poetry. Nice touch! Thanks for putting that one up Bama. Believe it or not, I'd never heard it before. The theme runs true to Matt's favorite (mine too). If you saw my thick resume, you'd probably think Frost wrote those with me in mind. Trivia: Frost was US poet laureate when he gave a reading at JFK's inauguration. What poem did he read?
~ The Gift Outright ~
The land was ours before we were the land's.
She was our land more than a hundred years
Before we were her people. She was ours
In Massachusetts, in Virginia.
But we were England's, still colonials,
Possessing what we still were unpossessed by,
Possessed by what we now no more possessed.
Something we were withholding made us weak.
Until we found out that it was ourselves
We were withholding from our land of living,
And forthwith found salvation in surrender.
Such as we were we gave ourselves outright
(The deed of gift was many deeds of war)
To the land vaguely realizing westward,
But still unstoried, artless, unenhanced,
Such as she was, such as she would become.
yes OHH I like poetry. I'm an English maj/Hist minor, and I told you before that I work with exceptional students /At Risk youths.
oh it is not saw, it is seen (grammar police)
and I wish everyone on this site would realize that A LOT is two words.
I have to do some research, but I want to guess on the triva
it could have been: good fences make good neighbors/ or wood pile/ or maybe its a stretch, Nature's Hue.
By the way are you an eastern or western ontario-an? just curious?
I look around for a bit though.
Dan, is that the answer?
Honestly, Matt, I don't know the answer. But I do remember seeing the old gentleman all bundled up in the bright sunshine and terrible cold when he did the reading. It was one of the earliest things I remember seeing on TV. Three or four years before Dad brought home a TV for a weekend trial. The winter olympics were on. Must have been 1958? I digress.
I'm living in Western Ontario now. Sorry to have to be so mysterious but there's one or two people on here who make me nervous about revealing my identity or whereabouts. I didn't fill out the paperwork for free gear and now I'm glad I didn't since it seems one of those people has someone on the inside at F&S. Someday they'll hopefully put a private messenger option on the site and eliminate this kind of chit-chat. Perhaps then we can become better acquainted. By the way, I have a PhD in history, BA minor in poly-sci, and an equivalent BA in biology.
Yes it is Ontario. I cheated and googled it. Turns out Frost had written a new poem for the occassion, titled Dedication. The problem was he was unable to read the words in the bright glare of that winter's day, so he recited one of his own that he'd committed to memory, which is the poem I posted above. I was in kindergarden at the time, so I don't remember the reading, but I have seem video of the Frost reading at least once.
OHH
And I hope he comes looking for me 'cause I'd like to throw him a party, blanket type, one each...
No such thing as privacy on the web. Think about it.
Dakota, thanks for that info. That's the kind of trivia I like. Had no idea he was reciting it from memory.
WAM, "blanket party" heh, heh. Been a long time since I heard that term. For those who don't know, a blanket party was the usual treatment for a barracks thief in the military. Everybody waits next to the doorway in the darkened common living area (light bulbs removed), the culprit walks in, a blanket is tossed over him and everybody takes a turn (or several) punching him till his lights go out. When the MPs arrive (me) the theiving scum has no idea who to point the finger at. Cry me a river, buddy!
hey this messge board started off on the right road not the one we are not taking...GET it! Anyway, good history lesson from OHH and Dakotah Dan!! yes this is the stuff that I like besides hunting. I do remeber the PHD in history, as I'm working on my Masters (Unv of Mich) Special Education. I could not take the poly-sci, too much for me internally to digest.
blanket party... you guys kill me! seriously. hehehehe
AND, where is this form for FREE stuff, Im serious, I never did either AND I want free stuff, starting with a 4 wheeler, I dont have one and can not part with the coin to buy one yet, so free would be good, heheheheheh
OHH, I ask about local only too see if I might be on your path soon ,we (family) may be going to Canada to fish soon, but not sure, Flint is not far from the ONT of the East, Sarnia, and such but I think my dad wants to go out of the North and head to Walla Walla , but who knows??
take care all.
Walla Walla is in Washington State. That would be British Columbia not Ontario. If you're headed to NW Ontario, give me a shout. We'll figure out some way to hook up, if I'm still around. I have an interview coming up for an office job in Seattle. We'll see how that goes. It will only last a year (thank heaven!) but is some pretty good bucks.
Sorry for going in the wrong direction in this thread. Was getting close to the line, I know.
You can go to your profile to sign up for free stuff. There's a button to click in there someplace. Or maybe you have to be five stars or something. I don't know. Actually, I don't think it's worth the trouble. I have heard too many bad things about the selection process for product reviewers. For the time being I think I'll remain as anonymous as possible. Probably took some risks putting all those photos in my profile.
Good for you and all the best in your MA pursuits. I used to think that it took a special person to deal with special needs kids. Now I think you have to be a very unspecial person not to. I love my son's special needs classmates dearly but it hurts too much now to be with them now. They are so anxious for us to return to them. Soon I hope.
Oh, now I get it ... "the road not taken". You almost got me Matt!
OHH where is the place north of Soo St marie that Shana Twain came from?? I thought is was Walla Walla , I Know the other is in WA, funny place there.. too much training while at FT.Lewis.
Shania Twain is from Timmins. That is quite a ways east of me. I was stationed at Ft Lewis and at Madigan. Long time ago.
well OHH, I dont think I'm all that special but working in the city I grew up on and helping some of the street, plus the smiles at graduation, well that is special.
No, I do not think your photos put you out there, it makes you human on a non human terminal. I too thought that I have put too much info out there, but hey, its life.
I'm sureyour son is looking after you and in that we all know when the time is right to go back to what ever ails us...it is hard for sure, but even harder is the unknown, and I feel safe in saying that you know where he is waiting for you and momma.
take care my friend, I'm gearing up and heading out for the "dogs" there is a full moon this wkend and I think the storms will get the yotes a moving. I plan on finally closing the deal by myself with no help from a spotter/shooter accompanying me, and you too know about that, being alone, but I will not be lonely.
Peace.
