Campfire
how many of ya'll have ever used one of these at your local pond/river/lake?
at what age did you stop?
did you ever have a "bad" experience with not letting go at the right time?
given the opportunity again, would you join in or watch from the side lines?
what a blast is all I can think of!
I did - the last time I used one was while I was still in high school - probably the summer before graduation. I used a couple of different rope swings - one I can remember at a pond - and had to stop when the surrounding land was turned into a subdivision - the other was from off the top of a pump house at rock quarry - you had to use a long limb to retrieve the rope which was tied at a location a good 10 feet over the water - and you jumped from about 15 feet above the water line - that one was FUN. I had to stop using that one when the surrounding area got developed and they cleaned up the quarry and put a bunch of little paddle boats on the water.
When I was a child there was a 60 foot rope at Garner State Park 1 hour north west of San Antonio. The rope was attached to a huge 90' cypress growing from the bank of the Freo river. Swingers could climb the 60 foot cliff and get some good velocities not to mention the enormous strain on your upper torso. Most people would swing from the 15-20 foot areas and some would venture to the roots of trees growing from the top of the cliff, about 45 feet. I saw so many people lose their grip and bounce and roll down the wet rock bank. I would swing so much my chest and arms would hurt for weeks after our vacation, but I loved every minute. I think those big swings helped me develope lots of upper body strength and stronger arms faster than all my sports and weight training. A flood sometime in the 90's took out that big tree. There's still a rope but it may be 35-40 feet and nothing like the one we grew up knowing. Rope swings, loads of fun and good exercise. Hang on tight!!
Once I let go too soon on the "out swing" and managed to get the knot that was tied at the bottom of the rope stuck between my legs as I descended. I limped around for a while and then did it again just to show my kids I was really alright. We haven't had any kids since then though...
