Squirrels were my first quarry with a .22 rimfire as a youngster and now, 50+ years later, I am a dedicated varminter.
Squirrels in the woods right above the house. It lead to duck hunting the next day; turkeys, grouse, rabbits, and pheasants later in the fall; deer that winter; gobblers that spring and from there it was no looking back.
Squirrels, and they still are my favorite game to hunt even though I've only been hunting for a year :-).
Rabbits...the neighbors would pay my brother and I $1 per head to keep gardens protected. This lead to squirrels next.
Sounds like we all got our start basically the same way. I started with squirrel and still hunt the limb chicken. Teaching the grandson how to hunt squirrel but he wants to make the leap to deer already, only problem is he thinks a 20 ga kicks too much. Don't know what he would do with a good deer rifle.
Yep, squirrels, using a pellet gun.
Just a few general wintertime small-game hunts with cottontails, snowshoes, grouse, and squirrels all in season at the time. A great way to start out, as my two older brothers and the hunting itself taught me plenty about all of these animals and the woods in general. We had no dog, so it was always just more of a stroll through the state land. Interesting that as my teen years went on, I was the only guy in my group of friends who could identify trees, use a compass, always get a fire going, etc.
I started with squirrels and that led to rabbits and that led to...
Got my start with bushytails.
Rabbits and pheasants.
