What would be the best zombie gun?

Uploaded on February 21, 2010

I was reading a credible hunting magazine this morning and it had an article on this subject. So here it is, if somehow the world was attacked by zombies what kind of gun would you use to fight them?

a mini 14. small ammo is easy to carry and it's light and rugged. for a sidearm i would carry a taurus judge.

Trick question.
Everyone knows when zombies attack you need multiple guns on you at all time.

1. A 12 gauge shotgun (preferably a pump because of the simplicity and high round capacity) loaded with slugs or buck shot

2. A small sized medium-large caliber rifle (ie. Winchester 94 in 30-30)

3. A more powerful rifle for longer shots (to defend you base). Something in .30-06 or larger (.50 cal is just over kill.....but then again if something is already dead and you kill it again it is overkill isn't it?) This gun could be left at your "base"

4. Multiple semi-auto pistols preferably a 1911 (no glocks you want metal so they don't break on you)

5. 1 or 2 revolvers for more stopping power than the semi-autos. A colt python in .357 mag would be ideal

6. A small sub-machine gun (9mm)

7. Frag grenades

All of this will be very heavy to carry so never travel to far from you "base" that way you don't have to carry too much ammo.

No grenades. You know that getting zombie bits on you is the quickest way to get infected yourself. Axes, while effective, are also very risky.

Shotguns and other standoff weapons are best.

from spartan88 wrote 2 years 12 weeks ago

True about the bits on you. However, I will be throwing my grenades more like a hail mary. So no zombie blood will be landing on my cuts. Also, make sure you wear jeans and long sleeves. If they cant bite through your clothing you'd be okay.

Dakotah Dan- If you provide all the guns I will be there (I only own a 22LR and a 20 ga semi auto), and yes, yes they do.

i'm in agreement with spartan, you need multiple guns. i would prefer a semi-auto shotgun or even the aa-12. next, you do need an asault rifle, i would carry either an m4 flat top with a holographic sight for quick aquisition, or an ak47 for the fact that they always go bang. next, you need a pistol or even better, two or three pistols. one of my pistols would be a 1911. its one heck of a gun and has served its country well. next i would carry a glock 18 for sheer fire power, they are easy to handle and you can put a lot of lead down range. next, i would carry a 357 revolver for the simple fact that a revolver wont jam. then when you finally run out of ammo, you need some sort of bludgeon. i would recomend an aluminum t-ball bat. they are shorter, easier to handle, and will produce the same amount of bashing power. plus you can use two at once... then if you are out of ammo and youre completely overwhelmed with the wreathing zombie scum, you pull the pin on your grenade, because none of us want to end up being one of them... no, ive never put any thought into surviving a zombie attack... we havnt even touched on body armor yet:)

Personally I would prefer a cricket bat. I also forgot to mention having a bow would be nice because in a worse case scenario you could make your own arrows.

from spartan88 wrote 2 years 12 weeks ago

By the way buck shot, I would want very little armor. The biggest advantage we have on TRUE zombies (not those infected people) is speed. Why make us weighed down more with armor? I will already be carrying 50+ pounds of guns and ammo.

spartan, eventually the zombies will find your hideout, no matter how carefull you are. a suit of armor would be handy, they cant bite through it, they dont have the motor skills to pull the pins to get to your fleshy interior. the bat and sword at close range combined with the armor will greatly enhance your zombie killing power.

I hope they find the hide out. With the moat and fences surrounding it I would just have lots of target practice as they stood around trying to find a way in. Since eventually they would get to me, the place would be rigged with explosives so I could take out as many zombies as possible with me.

Well I'm already an experienced zombie killer (call of duty 5) I've learned some of the essentials are at least something to make fire, long range rifle, fast shooting smaller rifle, very large handgun, and a shotgun. For my flame weapon being that a flamethrower is a little bulky I would use molotov cocktails, my long range rifle would be a barrett .50 caliber. For the smaller rifle I would still need something with knock down power so probably a 30-30 lever, my handgun would be a desert eagle .50 caliber, my shotgun would be a benelli nova sawed off and pistol grip style. also wearing something they couldn't bite would be nice so I'd wear my carharrt and a helmet.

from lovetohunt wrote 2 years 6 weeks ago

Like muskiemaster I also am very experienced zombie killer (28 solo rounds, origanal COD5 map). I find you need one gun with extreme nock down power. That would be a tactical Remington 870 loaded with slugs and/or buckshot. The secondary weapon would be any gun shooting .223's fully auto, but it needs to be light cause you will be doing lots of running. Now make yourself a "base" in the middle of a football field (one with a track on the outside). And when zombies come, run around with the 870 only shooting zombies that are in front of you. Then when there is no zombies coming in in front of you, bust out that .223 and turn around a light um up. Pistol is a 1911 for back up.

I want something belt-fed. The M249 is my first choice. For backup, any Sig or Glock in .45 with a high-cap mag will do. I've spent too much time unjamming the 1911 to make it a candidate. (Yeah, I know. The 1911 has come a long way since then. But still...) The wheelgun idea has merit, but I prefer high capacity and fast magazine changes because everyone knows that zombies tend to school.

Large, durable trucks make sense. But if you're going to fit the post-apocalypse cliche (and who doesn't want to do that?) then you need a Harley. Sportster 1200 please.

Everyone on here has had good replies, but the people talking about using .50 cals (Barrets and the Desert Eagle people) need to be realistic (i mean, u have to be realistic when talking about zombies, right?)

Here is what you would need:

A solid long range gun: My choice would be the m1A. It's the civilian, semi-auto m14, and iot fires 7.62 Nato, or .308, which is a common hunting round and would be easy to find. In the hands of a good shooter, it can put lead on target at 800 yards, which even if you aren't a good shooter, in such a target rich environment such as a zombie apacolypse, you could get good quickly

A lightweight full auto assault rifle: Now, most of the time you would wanna fire in semi auto, but you want the capability of full auto. My choice would be to find a military m4. It fires 5.56 Nato, or .223, which is another common round so it'd be easy to find ammo for, and the .223 round is extremely managable, so even people not familiar with fire arms could use it easily

A shotgun: semi auto pref, but a pump action shotgun with an extended magazine would be better than a semi auto with a small magazine. Speed loaders would be a must

Pistols: I would carry two or 3. One being of course, a 1911. I love my Kimber, and I wouldn't trade it for a damn thing. I would also carry a glock 17 or berreta 92fs, because 9mm will be easy to find, and those are both much higher capacity guns than the 1911. Also, I would wanna carry a little .357 magnum snubnose, for any "oh shit!" type moments. Also, since it can use .357 magnum and .38 special, it would be very easy to keep yourself in ammo.

Special guns: 2 sawed off double barrel shotguns, I mean sawed off to like 6" or so with pistol grips.

Also, for keeping the zombies away from your base, I would use a scoped .22. It would be sooooooooooooo easy to keep your self in ammo, and it's report wouldn't be as loud as the other guns, in case the zombies are attracted by sounds.

I would also wear a plastic face mask (like the kind you see medical examiners wear when they do an autopsy, and thick carharts to help protect me from bites as much as possible. And my back up weapon? screw baseball and cricket bats. I'ma use a freaking katana and decapitate some zombies

As any fan of Max Brooks would point out What you need for a Z would be semi auto like an M1 Carbine because lets face it if there really were Zombies we would be panicked and anything that fired full auto would be wasting shots. other than that I'd go with a .22 rifel and handgun using hyper velosity rounds. could use ammo for both and a headshot is all you need.

guns work great but you can only kill so many zombies with them. no ammo and your havin a bad day. i would carry the most effective blunt object or farming impliment i can find. I can easily find a cheap stamped katana, my roomate is a total geek has one (but don't tell him! He thinks he got an actual folded steel katana for 30 bucks, lol), but I imagine in your travels you could find some authentic katanas, for example, at a museum, where you would also be able to find a blackpowder blunderbuss, which would be very effective for when you run out ammo, because blackpowder is far, far easier to make than smokeless, and you can even load the barrel with gravel and whatnot

Depends on they type of zombie-
If it's the slow moving, just hit them in the head type, .22LR I would use a .22LR no doubt. .22LR would be very plentiful and a hot female survivor, that I just saved, can carry a lot of it while still in high heels (hey, as long as we're fantasizing here). A Ruger 10/22 would be perfect, they have a lot of magazines available with 30+ capacity and speed loaders. I'd keep a .22LR pistol on me, probably a browning Buckmark. I'd ensure I also have at least one bolt action .22LR as a backup. If I could manage to get one, I'd keep a 9mm carbine based off the AR platform for base defense scenarios where I would have to shoot at zombies through plywood barricades. I choose 9mm because at least if I lost my rifle while using it as a club, I have a good chance of finding a 9mm pistol somewhere in someone's house.
The only reason I would choose to pick a weapon in .30 cal, would be mainly to fight off the living humans who at this point have probably gone crazy and would be desperate enough to do ANYTHING. A 7.62 round on just about anywhere on the body would be enough to stop someone from getting to my cache of twinkies, krispy kremes, and diet coke. Twinkies would be necessary for long term sustainment because they last forever, krispy kremes would be used for bartering for more ammo and, well, the diet coke to keep me thin-ish (a fatter human is a tastier human)
If the zombies are the fast, infected type, I would just need a gun with one bullet big enough to kill myself.

I'd say 870 with extended mag tube (likely a short tactical barrel). Fill it with an array of slugs, buckshot, and steel BBs. Backup would be a 1911 or S&W Governor (NOT the Taurus Judge). I prefer to have as little variance of caliber in my ammo supply as possible.

Forget about that machete or axe... you don't want a blade to stick at close range. My vote goes to an aluminum bat for a melee weapon with which you can knock them away from you.

Stick with the basic survival rules of Zombieland.

1st off, a shotgun of any type would not be a good option neither would large caliber hunting rifles because everyone (well at least I thought everyone but apparently not due to earlier post) knows that loud sounds attract zombies.

On that note some semi-auto mid caliber rifle with a silencer would work well. Follow the double tap rule (zombieland) which means one shot to the head/heart then another after that.

A fully auto rifle would waste too much ammo for most situations but it is still vital to have one in the case of being overrun by zombies and need to quickly clear them out. In this situation cocktail bombs, grenades and any other explosive would be great as well but be careful using them could waste time which could be the difference between turning into a zombie and not.

Always carry a handgun as well a semi-auto .45 would be best

Now I know I just said a shotgun would not be a good option but shotguns are a necessity no need for double tap rule with a shotgun preferably a 12 gauge pump with extended mags no need for buck shot, get 3in steel shot and you will be fine mostly because it is reliable, works well, and looks bad a**

of course a melee weapon is vital as well in the extremely unfortunate event in which you run out of ammo. a longer weapon such as an axe or a maul would work great knives would be cutting it a little close. In the event of a zombie apocalypse, ammo should not be too hard to come bye if you just look around. most stores and armories containing ammo will be abandoned and full

these are the basics but if you are looking for more there is a book called zombie survival guide that has everything you need to know.

There will be 2 guns worth keeping during a Zombie attack or for survival.
These are guns I own as well:

AR-15 Rock River Arms Tactical Entry w/ AIMPOINT red dot m3 scope w/ a Sling to throw over your shoulder or back. Plenty of ammunition. Mags full, if anything.

Glock 22 40. cal.- You've got 15 rds in each clip plus one chambered. Plenty of Mags/ Ammunition. Great range and reliability. Plenty of stopping power.

I won't get into the gear and accessories you may need, but those 2 guns would be my choice, and would eventually be the lightest to carry if I or whomever would have to be on the move.

Ak-47, my only issue would be where would I find that kind of ammunition if I were to run out. Popularity in ammunition is not good with this gun. So if i were to scavenge for ammo, I would more than likely come across 40. cal or .223's over anything else. Maybe 9mm would be the other type of ammo that would be plentiful.

You have to have a 12in Bowie knife and a very sharp Machete, maybe even a third 6in knife.

You'll be fine with this set-up on the move. Food carry would only be common sense.

1. Medium caliber carbine silenced. The bullets have to be able to penetrate bone at any range, so preferably something more powerful than a .22. Needs to be suited for short to long range tasks when necessary.
2. Large rifle silenced. Preferably semi-auto. Main purpose would be to help provide cover fire for other survivors in your group. If you can find a rifle/carbine duo that shoot the same caliber it would be best to use that so you don't have to weigh yourself down with a lot of different ammunitions.
3. 12 gauge pump. Last ditch effort if you get trapped in a building, at that point you don't need to worry about kill shots as much as just getting them down or out of the way. The best one I have found is the Kel-Tec KSG: Double tube magazines that can hold 6 3" shells each, it can also shoot all the way down to 1and3/4" shell. Lots of lead without reloading.

After that, you want to get handguns, as many as you can carry with ammunition and all. Obviously, if all of them are the same caliber it will reduce the need for extra weight. As far as I can tell, a .380 would be best. They are heavy enough to penetrate the skull but kick much less than most other handgun rounds. You would want silencers again on these because you don't want to draw in the hoard while getting out of a sticky situation. Also, remember that Zac is not the only enemy. Somewhere you might run into another survivor who wants to kill you for your supplies. For this problem, I personally would want something larger than .380 like a .45 or a .357 mag. Like i said, as many of the same calibers you can carry, the better.

As for melee style weapons, you need something that is a good tool that you can use, i.e.; Crowbars, shovels, etc. You want to avoid using hatchets and axes and such because the blades can become lodged in the skull and wile you waist time trying to pull it out, the rest of the hoard closes in on you.

Last but not least, you want at least a thin layer of armorous clothing. Something like a biker jacket or a work-coat just in case one sneaks up on you.

All of this will be very heavy to carry so never travel to far from you "base" that way you don't have to carry too much ammo.

i'm in agreement with spartan, you need multiple guns. i would prefer a semi-auto shotgun or even the aa-12. next, you do need an asault rifle, i would carry either an m4 flat top with a holographic sight for quick aquisition, or an ak47 for the fact that they always go bang. next, you need a pistol or even better, two or three pistols. one of my pistols would be a 1911. its one heck of a gun and has served its country well. next i would carry a glock 18 for sheer fire power, they are easy to handle and you can put a lot of lead down range. next, i would carry a 357 revolver for the simple fact that a revolver wont jam. then when you finally run out of ammo, you need some sort of bludgeon. i would recomend an aluminum t-ball bat. they are shorter, easier to handle, and will produce the same amount of bashing power. plus you can use two at once... then if you are out of ammo and youre completely overwhelmed with the wreathing zombie scum, you pull the pin on your grenade, because none of us want to end up being one of them... no, ive never put any thought into surviving a zombie attack... we havnt even touched on body armor yet:)

If there were hundreds or thousands at close range it would be sweet to have a 12 guage minigun with buckshot. that would definitely be the meaning of spray and pray!

Zombies aren't real. So I don't worry about these kind of things.

I would want a sameri sword. you never run out of bullets with a sword. but if I had a gun I want a ruger 10-22. supper accurate and reliable.

I saw some 7.62 nato ballistic tip high velocity rounds at aacademy being marketed as "Zombie Ammo". It was one of the funniest things I have ever seen.

The best system I can think of would be to have 3 long guns;
