Campfire
I hunt deer in Connecticut and I hunt with a marlin 336 chambered 35rem I am looking for a new gun for both whitetail around my home state and black bear in Maine. What caliber is recommended and specifically what gun is the best for the game I am after? I prefer lever action rifles and so far I like the Marlin 1895sbl (45-70govt.) but would prefer something a littler lighter on the wallet. suggestions?
nothing wrong with using a .35rem for black bear
I think you have an excellent gun for the job(s) already. Then again, if your wallet can stand it, a new gun needs little excuse for buying in my book.
If you are thinking 45-70, I'm assuming you are also thinking of other game in other places besides these too. There's not much out there in the world that couldn't be hunted with a Marlin 1895 and some hot handloads or specialty ammo from somebody like Buffalo Bore. Make sure your dental work is tight and you have a good recoil pad. My 1895 was a kicking SOB with warm-to-hot loads. Not too bad with factory ammo.
I don't have any suggestions for you on a less expensive lever gun. The old adage "you get what you pay for" comes to mind. Maybe check Gunbroker.com for a used one?
my only solution is .357 weatherby mag. or 30-06 id use it for anything from deer on up its the shot that counts not the gun anyways
