The Tip Board

bye bye gambrel

Uploaded on October 16, 2010

The next time you think of hanging a deer with a gambrel stick. Try this. Instead go to your local garage and ask your mechanic for a disposed of relatively short V-belt. Now take the belt and run it under the pelvic bone, and then loop it through itself. The belt is now secure to the deer. Next, fasten your hoist rope to the tag end of the V-bely and hoist. As you skin the deer, not only will the gambrel not be in your way, you'll be able to cut the hind legs off at the knee joint as soon as the skin is down to the tail; this will aid in raising the deer in tight quarters. Also as you are quartering the deer, you'll never have to remove the deer from the gambrel to remove the hind quarters from the carcas. 50 plus deer and counting, and never had a pelvic bone or V-belt fail.

I think it would be interesting to see the ratio of people who hang their deer head down vs up. I am a downer, by the hocks.

im a downer too, i hang mine from the rafters with bailing wire that has been there longer than i have. recently, we have taken the swings off the 'ol swing set and we are now wiring deer to the swing set frame. works pretty well.
