A water wolf? ...a snake?...a slimy? Some even contend they smell bad. I would, and have done it. Tied up a bunch of tube flies I could run a wire leader through to the stinger fly, and worked great..fished backwater sloughs off the Alagnak River in AK.
I would, but they aren't very common 'round these parts. If I ever make it back to Wisconsin or Minnesota you can bet I'll try it.
The pike family doesn't get a lot of attention up here in vermont from outsiders but we do have some sizable, not huge pike and muskies, and the pike population is great
There are more efficient ways to fish for pike. Fishing with a fly-rod is just forcing it.
badsmerf....No, it is not forcing it. IN areas where there are lots of pike, it is a slam dunk on a flyrod. The problem anyone method has is to keep a pike from biting you off. A heavy mono end section, or a wire tippet section does the job. I caught them one after another on tube flies as I mentioned. Good casting, good line handling, and good pike water, and it is a no-brainer.
In some places pike are too easy to catch on regular tackle, so it's fun to have a challenge, even though most of the time it is not that challenging
I can remember my dad taking a back woods trip to a Canadian province flyin lake years ago, and fishing with an Indian guide fishing out of their wide canoe type boats. My dad was no great fisherman, but they caught pike one after another, and would use lures like a beer manufacturers promo lure he would show with all the pike, teeth marks on it that was a beer bottle replica with a split-ring, and a treble hook attatched. If it shined, the lure would catch pike.
Wow! Did I make my point? Sorry, there was a problem with the multiple post. ;)
Pike on the fly is something I plan on doing this year. There is a local lake that has some decent size fish in it and that's where I'll be heading.
