Fly Fishing
Over the past 4 months I have recommended that anyone searching for quality fly fishing look up Albright Fishing Products. I regret doing so now, as I have found that while it seems like you are getting a good deal, you are actually getting what you pay for: a mid-level product and poor customer service.
I got into fly fishing about 4 months ago, and ordered the GP 9' 5-6 wt. 2-piece, GP 5-6 reel, and set of Trinity waders. It took forever for them to ship, and when I called to inquire about it the CEO was very condenscending and promised I would recieve a shipping notification right away viaemail. I recieved it three days later, the day before the shipment arrived. I shook this off and found that I was satisfied with the equipment that I had purchased, although the reel has developed some wobble after only moderate use.
In early May I placed an order for a GP 9'6" 7-8 wt. 2-piece, and a week later I recieved the rod. The next weekend I finally got out on the water with it to chase stripers. I hooked up within a few minutes and landed a nice 9 lb. female, no problems. Until an hour later, when I made a roll cast and the rod snapped in half just above the third snake guide above the ferrule. This was the first time I had used the rod! Well, I figured no big deal. Albright has a "10 day, no hassle return policy", and being that this is the 7th day that the rod had been in my possession(let alone the first time I had used it) surely it would be covered under this policy and they would send me a new tip section. I was saddly mistaken. After a few emails and phone calls, during all of which I was given the run around and plenty of excuses, I was told by the CEO that I would have to send in a digital pic of the broken rod in order for them to sell me a new one at a discounted price of $44.99. This was the best that they could do. Discounted price???? If I had wanted to pay that much I would have just ordered another one off of the website! Not only that, but he informed me that I needed to order a different 8-9 wt. to handle the stripers, that the 7-8 wt. wouldn't handle them. I know for a fact that my fishing partner has been catching stripers for 4 years on a 7 wt. TFO with no problems, so this tells me that Albright products are of lesser quality and construction. I will not be purchasing any more products from them, and will be telling everyone I know not to buy from Albright unless they want inferior equipment and non-existant customer service. I have no respect for a company that won't back their products, and treats their customers like disposable napkins! They have just lost four customers from my group. DO NOT BUY FROM ALBRIGHT!
I have fished the Albright EXS 1004-4 (ten foot, 4wt. 4pc), the EXS 907-4, the EXS 910-4 and EXS 1409-4 Spey Rod with nothing but success for years. No breaks, no prolems. In fact, very few rods like the Albrights are engineered with three (3) stripping guides per rod for longer casting combined with the usual number of snake guides. And then there's the white dot section alignment feature. I have several Albright Technical Shirts (the plaid ones) and the sleeve length and sizing are right for me, where as the Simms tech shirts run small and the shortness of the sleeves are not in proportion to the torso. Now, I did make the mistake years ago buying the Trinity waders. That goofy velcro strap on the inside of each leg, meant to restrain creeping up/down of the waders is a joke. I used them for my conservation volunteering work parties until I found a more comfortable Cabela's neoprene for $50 US.
Well I'm glad to hear that you've had good luck with yours. I'm sure I just got a bad egg, so to speak. I still love my GP 90562 and GP reel, and the Trinity waders no longer have the velcro strap you mentioned, and are in fact a decent wader. But I refuse support a company that will not stand behind their products and treats their customers rudely.
I bought an 8 wt. setup last winter for steelheading. The GP 7/8 reel that I bought didn't even make it thought the first trip. I would say I hooked into 6 or 7, not even any of the monsters up there and the drag was shot. The drag is limited now and has a nails on a chalkboard sound. The rod I can't complain about, but I'll invest a little more next time on a better reel.
I bought the A5 5wt. and while it casts nice it is a cheap rod.The tip section broke on mine with minimal force and that was 8 months ago and I still have not recieved a replacement but I have recieved one of the best run arounds Iv'e ever seen.I also have a 10 wt. in that series that broke in half when I had to come tight on about a 8lb.redfish trying to keep him out of some mangroves.Albright management should take a course in customer service so they could begin to see how that works.Bottom line, poor customer service and cheap products.I would never buy an Albright product again.Spend a little more and get a good rod from a company that cares.
I guess experiences are always personal and subjective. I bought an A-5 for a friend, who liked it quite a bit. He snapped the tip section off on a truck tailgate, and contacted Albright. His experience with customer service was very positive, and they shipped him a new tip quickly. Anyway, just my 2 cents.
If what you say is true, I would not be buying from Albright as well. That is corrupt customer service, not just lousy.
