Fishing

Making youngsters pay to fish?

Uploaded on February 04, 2009

I’m from Pa and it’s the only state that I have ever resided in so that might have something to do with my confusion. It is rumored that the Fish Commission is kicking around the idea of requiring a Jr license for the ages of 12-16 years old to be able to fish. I was wondering if anyone knows if this has any truth to it or not and if other states do this? It seems as though before too long they will start charging us for all types of licenses; ie: bass, crappie, trout, fly rod only, cat fish, walleye… I just think that its getting out of hand. It relates to the article in the F&S Double Issue “Why Johnny Won’t Hunt”. Now I’m sure a father isn’t going to make his 12 year old son pay for his own fishing license but, a 14 or 15 year old might have to.

Here in Utah they imposed a fee for 12-14 yrs. Previously 14 and under required no license.
Now 12-14 = $5. 14-65 = $26. 65 and older = $14.

I don't understand why they would want to have a Jr. license. In Alabama its a $12 annual for 16 to 65 and 65 and up lifetime license $12.

In texas you have to have a license if you are 17 and up, years ago they setup a rule where you had to have a license at 13, but that only lasted one year and they did away with it.

I think any type of fishing or hunting is great. To charge youngsters to do this is wrong. IF it is used improperly. If this is just another government ploy to gain revenue then NO. If it is really going back to our hunting and fishing habitats, then why not.

I dont think it is a good idea to have youngsters pay for a license. This is the time in their life when they are deciding whether or not they are going to take up the sport. I think if they are charged to do this they may be more likely to not want to do it and with all of the other challenges our youth have today they should have the chance to have some good wholesome fun.

I live in Oregon. This summer I was fishing at the Deschutes River with my 2 little brothers. They were playing on the banks of the river and I hooked into a couple of nice steelies (see pic on my profile) which I let them help me land (as far as they know they did it themselves). They were legal fish, so I tagged them and kept fishing (3 limit). About 30 mins later, a sheriff comes down and asks for their licenses says he watched them from a ways away on his binocs. I was unaware that Oregon makes juniors (anyone under 16) buy a harvest tag. Luckily, he didn't write me a ticket, but he sure made a stink of it. It just pissed me off that I tagged the fish and he still gave me and my brothers a hard time. I guess the jist of the story is that they really don't want to go back because of it.

This does relate to the "Why Johnny Wont Hunt" article. 14 - 16 year olds I dont think generally have jobs so they shouldn't have to pay for a license. Im 18 I can understand that I need to buy a license, but if your trying to get the younger generation to keep fishing, haaving them pay isnt going to help a bit.
