Fishing
i'm a 16 year-old in high school who runs cross country and track. but i'd like to take a new hobby of fishing. i've been fishing and even ice fishing before but now that i can drive, i would like to take a step out on my own. my dad used to fish a lot more often than he does now and has a very old (and kinda out-dated) tackle box. well, i would like to start my own tackle box, but don't get me wrong, i respect all of my dad's lures and equipment. any advice on lures and anything else?
A lot of the lures in your dad's tackle box are probably classic lures that work very well. A great place to look for lures for the fish you want to go after is in the "5o Best Lures" that you can find on this web site. Also "The Ultimate Guide to Freshwater Fishing" is invaluable- I bought mine at Borders.
Find someone in your area that likes to fish and go with them a few times to see what works for the fish in your area.
Check out bigfishtackle.com for fishing forums for your area- they have state by state forums.
Find the mom and pop tackle shop near you and drop by to chat with them. They know more about fishing in your area than you could ever imagine learning.
I could not have said it any better than Charley, pair up with someone and get a lay of the land and go after those fish.
One lure I recommend for every tackle box is an artificial worm, learn the different techniques to use it, whether it's texas rigged, caroline, wacky style or whatever, but that is one go to lure everyone should have in their box.
thanks a lot, i'll look into the books, especially since my mom works at the library and the "mom and pop" tackle shops nearby. and i also received a artificial worm from my friend as a gift to make up for all of my dad's old, chewed up, dry worms. but they probably caught a ton of fish in their time. well now i officially have my own first lure... thanks again.
I strongly agree with the above statements. I know exactly how your situation is. My situation was similar. I'm 18 and I really started when I was about 14. My dad showed me some spots to fish and so did my Grandfather. My advice is to take some of your friends if they are interested. Learning with friends is always more fun. I love to find creeks and fish in the hard to reach places. These are always fun to find and they can produce some fun fishing. Just remember: The best way to learn is to go and fish. Experiance is what will make you be a great angler. Have fun and good luck!
you have to start off with a rod and reel then ask some local fishermen what the fish are biting on then take it from there.
