I would use soft plastic crayfish because smallmouth won't eat them until they shead there outer shell.

i like to use the chartreuse berkley gulp on a mimmic minnow head, it always pounds smallmouth for me from summer through fall
twister tail for smallmouth or something that has a crayfish sort of pattern seem to work well.
try live goby if your fishing the great lakes it works better than anything else here
Rapala X-rap and any kind of senkos work well
Rapala Skitter Pop, it worked very well for me.
I usually use just a white rooster tail around banks which works pretty well.
