Repairing an aluminum fishing boat.

Uploaded on March 23, 2013

Hey everyone,

I just got a 14 foot aluminum boat for free from a buddy of mine. The boat is in rough shape, but according to my friend it is floatable. Here are the issues I see, it has tar on the bottom, chaulking on some of the seems, and old and faded camo paint. Here is what I am planning to do, but I wanted to run it by someone who rehad a boat before.

1) Step one use a heat gun and scraper to rid the boat of the tar and chaulk.
2) Tighten the rivets, by banging them into place.
3) Use JB Weld around all the seems.
4) Then paint it. Here is where I am having issues. Should I use an oil base paint or has anyone used a two part expoxy paint.

I will also be power washing it and performing float test pretty regulary.

Has anybody else repair a boat and if so, any tips? I am getting hung up on the rivets.

Check with a paint store or at a store that sells auto body repair supplies...ask for a recommendation for paint specifically meant for application to aluminum.

Your plan sounds good to me.
