Saltwater

Kodiak, Alaska

Uploaded on August 13, 2010

I recently returned from a once in a lifetime fishing trip to Kodiak. It was absolutely awesome!
We (our group) caught several different species. The halibut were lots of fun though there were only two of any size landed. (70 and 80 lbs) We limited out on halibut two out of three days. The ling cod were about as ugly as any fish I've ever encountered.
The silver salmon were probably the most fun, throwing a boat of five fishermen and two deck hands into a state of total chaos when everyone hooked up!
I caught the two largest kings of our group. The first weighed approximately 30 pounds with a second fish 20 minutes later of about 35 pounds! I'm planning on going back next summer (2011) for an encore!
What other species besides halibut, ling cod, grey cod, rockfish, silver and king salmon are sought after?

i think those are the main ones people fish for. i went to anchorage during the king salmon run in 08 and it was a blast ive never had so much fun fishing in my life. i have a good friend that live there so he took me everywhere and pretty much guided me. i know theres other salmon runs like reds and dog salmon. you should try to go up their when the kings run you wont regret it. they run at the end of june beginning of july time frame

Firstbubba, are you going again this year? If you are, what do you use, jigs or bait? I'm curious.

I went with a charter boat, Ftff. We used herring for bait for everything except ling cod. For ling, we used a (for this old freshwater crab) huge jig. It was a 1.5 pound version of a crappie jig.
For me, the most fun was "mooching" for salmon! The next "most" fun was the silvers. One guy hooked up and the captain had him hold the fish just off the back of the boat. About a jillion others silvers came up with the hooked fish and three of the other guys hooked up. It made a Chinese fire drill look tame!
